NEW SNOWSHOE TRAIL AT TRÜBSEE Leave your tracks in fresh powder snow while marvelling at the im- posing mountain backdrop with its highest peak, the Titlis. The new Trübsee snowshoe trail leads through the remote, hilly landscape that borders the protected nature reserve at Trübsee. Out of respect for the animal inhabitants, visitors must remain on the marked path. The highest point of the walk is the Bitzistock, and provides breathtaking views into the Engelberg Valley below. The circular walk is just under 3 km in length and takes one and a half hours to complete. Snowshoe hikers can start either at the mountain station of the Untertrübsee- Obertrübsee “Älplerseil” cableway, or at the winter hiking trail around lake Trübsee. www.titlis.ch/en

SNOW CANNONS AND SLOPE ADJUSTMENT AT THE JOCH PASS From the 2017/18 winter season, the latest snowmaking equipment will be in use at the Joch Pass. The equipment has been employed on the Stand-Trübsee slope since last winter, where it has already proved its worth. The steep, narrow section of the slope in the centre of the Joch Pass is also going to be adjusted and widened. These two measures will greatly improve the quality of the ski slope at the Joch Pass.

SNOW CANNONS HEAD FOR THE GLACIER In summer 2017, snow cannons were set up to cover the area from the Stand station to the Titlis glacier. The lower section of the glacier ski slope and the section through the Rotegg can now be covered in artificial snow. The extension and updating of the facilities means that the skiing season can start earlier. The objective is to open the slopes on the glacier in October, the Stand-Trübsee slope in November, and the Joch Pass area and downhill slope into the valley in December.

PANORAMA TRAIL Engelberg’s most popular winter hiking trail is the Panorama Trail from Ristis to the Brunni mountain hut via the Rigidal hut. The hike takes around an hour and 15 minutes and leads past snowy conifers and Alpine huts, with gorgeous views of Engelberg’s mountain land- scape. www.brunni.ch/en

SKIING ON PURE “SUNSHINE SNOW” The Brunni skiing and sledging area is the sunniest winter sports des- tination in Central Switzerland. The slopes between Ristis and the Brunni mountain hut are covered with “sunshine snow” – that’s snow made from pure mountain spring water and solar energy from our own solar power plant (www.sonnenschnee.ch). The plant produces more than 30,000 kWh of electricity each year, which is approxi- mately the same amount needed to make the artificial snow for the Brunni. That makes our “sunshine snow” carbon neutral. Guests are also taken up to the top in an eco-friendly way, as since 2013 the cableways have been powered by carbon-free hydroelectric power from EWO-Naturstrom. www.brunni.ch/en

SWITZERLAND’S STEEPIST ROPE-TOW LIFT The higher up you go in the Brunni ski area, the more demanding the slopes become – and so does the transportation to get there! Switzer- land’s steepest rope-tow lift leads from the Brunni mountain hut to Schonegg at 2,050 metres a.s.l. – with a slope of 48% (that’s a gra- dient of 26°)! This is a challenging incline and not suitable for begin- ners. But your hard work will be rewarded with the sunniest slope in the whole of Engelberg. It may be a “black” slope but it’s the bright- est and the best! www.brunni.ch/en

GREATEST SLEDGING CHOICE IN CENTRAL SWITZERLAND With four sledging slopes totalling almost 10 km in length, Engelberg has Central Switzerland’s greatest sledging choice. Two of the slopes are in Brunni. They are both 2.5 km long and give you plenty of sun- shine while you sledge. Once is the Rinderbüehl, a fun ride that leads down wide slopes to the Hütismatt Alpine meadow. Zigerboden is the more challenging slope, offering a high-speed ride down some steep sections. Sledges, airboards and jumping jacks can be hired next to the Yeti Park on Ristis. If you plan to go sledging with small children, we recommend the Yeti Park on Ristis or the Klostermatte in Engel- berg. www.brunni.ch

ENGELBERG AS A HEALTH RESORT In the 18th century, increasing numbers of tourists from all over the world started visiting the Engelberg valley, enticed here by the impressive Alpine landscape. The Titlis, a peak of over 3,200 metres, was first scaled in 1744. Back in 1650, Abbot Plazidus had described the Titlis as “terrifying and extremely high”, and in the 18th century climbing a mountain like the Titlis must have been quite an adventure, especially given the primitive mountaineering equipment of the day. During the 19th century, Engelberg developed into a modern health resort. Its fresh mountain air, good drinking water and salubrious climate were prized highly by guests from near and far who were seeking relaxation and relief from their ailments. Soon, the few boarding houses in the village could no longer take in all the visitors, and large hotels started to be built – veritable palaces with gorgeous gardens. Some advertised the health benefits of “taking the waters”. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that Engelberg started developing into a winter sports resort as well.

ENGELBERG MONASTERY The Benedictine Monastery of Engelberg has influenced the local history of this beautiful mountain valley since 1120, the year the monastery was founded. The modern day activities of the monks grew out of the essential needs of the locality: education (Stiftsschule), pastoral duties, crafts and handiwork, cultural, agricultural and environmental development and maintenance. In all of these areas, the monks - as well as the other men and women who work in the monastery - have had a hand. The Benedictine Monastery of Engelberg offers public tours year round to visitors and guests. (Mondays through Saturdays, no tours Sundays or holidays.) Tours last about one hour, and highlights include the Baroque Hall, the guest refectory, the ‚Room of Virtues’ with its exquisite inlaid woodwork done by Br. Columban Louis and the renovated monastery church. www.kloster-engelberg.ch
