ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Susan L. Rolá is currently enjoying her third year of retirement from teaching orchestra for 31+ years! She was the Director of Orchestras at Lindbergh High School for 24 years. Prior to teaching at Lindbergh she taught in the Ritenour School District for 7+ years. At Lindbergh, Sue directed the Lindbergh High School Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, team taught at Sperreng Middle School and instructed elementary strings. Under her leadership, the Symphony Orchestra performed at the Missouri Music Educators Association convention on two occasions. They also were aired four times on Classic 99 KFUO Radio in a program called “High School Outreach for the Classics”. She established the Lindbergh High School Strolling Strings in 1991. The LHS Strolling Strings is an extracurricular high energy, enthusiastic group of young musicians who perform throughout the Greater St. Louis area. In the winter months she directed the “pit” orchestra for the annual high school musical. Sue received her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education at the University of Missouri, St. Louis and a Masters of Education Degree from National-Louis University. She earned additional credit hours through Truman State University. Sue maintains a private violin studio and is a member of the Sunset String Quartet as well as the Town and Country Symphony Orchestra. She has served two terms as the High School Orchestra Vice President of the St. Louis Suburban Music Educators Association. She also holds professional memberships with MoASTA and the National Association for Music Education. During her retirement she enjoys adjudicating orchestra festivals in Missouri. Sue’s honors include the “Lindbergh Leader” award from the Lindbergh School District in 1998. In 2011 she received the “Outstanding Music Educator” award from the St. Louis Suburban Music Educators Association. The “Secondary String Educator of the Year” award was presented to her by the Missouri American String Teachers Association in 2014. In January, 2015 the St. Louis Suburban Music Educators Association honored Sue with the Prestigious “Hall of Fame” award. In the Fall of 2016, Sue established a new community strolling strings group called “Pizzazz”! Pizzazz is open to students from high school through adult who enjoy playing alternative styles of music. Sue’s other interests include, jewelry designer, exercise instructor, scrapbooking, traveling and enjoying her family. She would like to thank her husband Matt for all his support throughout the years as well as her parents who never missed a concert! Sue and Matt are not only proud of their four children, all with music careers, but also their budding musical grandchildren (three violins and a drummer)!

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Michael Blackwood is a native of the St. Louis area and has taught music in public & private schools here for the past 17 years. Currently teaching strings in the Rockwood School District, he holds a BS in Secondary Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a MM in Composition from Webster University. He has had the good fortune to direct several groups throughout his career, including the Parkway-Rockwood Intermediate Honors Orchestra and the Metro 8 High School Honors Orchestra. Also, he is a published composer, a freelance musician, enjoys music directing for local musical theatre productions (and even gets on stage occasionally to act). He is the proud husband of Sara, and father of two, Caroline & Eric.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Dr. Mark Laycock is a Professor of Music at Wichita State University, where he holds the Ann Walenta Faculty of Distinction Endowed Professorship. He has been recognized with the WSU Excellence in Creative Activity Award (2012) and the College of Fine Arts Excellence in Teaching Award (2007). He serves as Director of Orchestras and Coordinator of Strings. WSU Symphony Orchestra appearances under his direction include international tours to Spain and Canada, a May 2011 concert at Carnegie Hall, and multiple invited performances at Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshops. Dr. Laycock is a member of the Board of Directors of the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic; he serves as Chair of Orchestra Activities. He is Conductor of the Wichita Youth Symphony and Director of the Youth Orchestras Program. His work as guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator spans 29 states; upcoming engagements encompass Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, and Texas. He has conducted all-state, region, and district orchestras throughout the country. He has served the National Orchestra Festival as adjudicator and clinician, and in 2018 will begin a two-year term as chair of the event. His appearances with professional ensembles include the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, Wichita Grand Opera, and Opera Kansas, as well as orchestras in Slovakia and Canada. Dr. Laycock has presented clinic sessions for numerous state education conferences, as well as the American String Teachers Association National Conference, the Northwest and Northeast Division Conventions of the National Association for Music Education, and the Midwest Clinic. In May 2016, he presented professional development sessions for instrumental music educators in Brisbane, Australia, returning that September to conduct the Sir Charles Mackerras String Orchestra of the Queensland State Honours Ensemble Program. He is a Keynote Presenter for the Australian Strings Association 2018 National Conference in Perth. From 2013-2015, Dr. Laycock was an invited music education panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, evaluating grant applications from institutions throughout the country. He served as Director of Orchestras and Instrumental Music at Chapman University in Orange, California, where he led invited performances for the California Music Educators Association and at Disneyland. He was also Principal Conductor of the Irvine (CA) Classical Players, leading the youth orchestra on concert tours to Italy (2006) and France (2008). From 1998- 2003, Dr. Laycock served as Director of Orchestral Activities at Iowa State University and was Music Director of the Central Iowa Symphony. Under his leadership, the ISU Symphony Orchestra performed at the North Central Division Convention of the Music Educators National Association and collaborated with such artists as bass-baritone Simon Estes and pianist-composer Marvin Hamlisch. He earned a Doctor of Arts degree in orchestral conducting from the University of Northern Colorado. Dr. Laycock holds a Master of Music degree in instrumental conducting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Bachelor of Arts degree in music history and literature from the University of Southern California. An experienced educator, he was an instructor of strings and orchestra at the middle and high school levels in the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Rob Babel is currently in his 20th year as Director of Bands at Ft. Zumwalt North High School in O’Fallon, MO and his 25th year teaching. His duties include directing the Panther Pride Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band and Jazz Lab Band. In addition, he assists with beginning and intermediate band at North Middle School. Under his direction the Ft. Zumwalt North Jazz Band has three times presented concerts at The Midwest Clinic and the Missouri Music Educators Conference and twice presented concerts at the Jazz Education Network Conference. In addition, the FZN Wind Ensemble and Symphonic have consistently earned superior ‘I’ ratings at State Contest and the 155-member Panther Pride Band has been recognized as one of the outstanding marching bands in Missouri, earning recognition as a Bands of America Class AA Champion and Super Regional Finalist and receiving Division ‘I’ ratings at BOA Super Regionals in St. Louis for the past six years. Mr. Babel has been recognized as the 2016 Missouri Music Educator of the Year and is a recipient of the Charles Emmons Outstanding Band Director Award for Lamda Chapter of Phi Beta Mu. He has also been named the Ft. Zumwalt North Teacher of the Year, the St. Louis Metro District Eight Music Educator of the Year, and an O’Fallon Citizen of Achievement. He has served as Jazz Vice President for the Missouri Music Educators Association and remains active as a saxophone teacher, clinician and adjudicator and currently resides in St. Louis with his wife Tina, and their three children, Alex, Katie, and Chloe.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Dan Smith received a B.M. in Music Education from the University of Missouri at St. Louis and has done post graduate work at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Illinois. Dan is in his second year as adjunct professor at Webster University leading the Jazz Collective Big Band and also teaches a jazz brass class at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. Dan is a busy freelance player who has performed at The Muny, The Fox Theatre and at Riverport Amphitheatre backing artists including Sammy Davis Jr., Doc Severinsen, Burt Bacharach, Mel Torme, Michel Legrand, Amy Grant, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Manhattan Transfer, Barry Manilow, Jerry Lewis, Natalie Cole, The Moody Blues, Rosemary Clooney, Bernadette Peters, Jay Leno, Don Rickles, Bob Newhart to name just a few. He has performed with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Repertory Theatre, has toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and has done 6 tours playing lead trumpet with the 1940's musical revue, In The Mood Live! including 2 tours in Australia. Dan stays busy with his private teaching and also plays solo piano around the St. Louis metropolitan area.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Chris Becker graduated from the University of Missouri - Kansas City Conservatory of Music “With Distinction” in 1977, receiving the Bachelor of Music Education Degree, and earned a Master of Arts in Education from Lindenwood University. Mr. Becker is the Director of the Wind Ensemble and the Jazz Band at Washington University in St. Louis, and serves as the director of winds and percussion. Mr. Becker has taught instrumental music in Missouri for 40 years at all levels from the elementary to the university level. In June, 2017, he retired as Director of Bands at Parkway South High School, after serving for 36 years in the Parkway School District (St. Louis County, Missouri). During his tenure there, he directed Marching Bands, Symphonic Bands, Jazz Bands, and all other related band activities. In addition, he is the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Manchester Community Band, a highly successful ensemble founded five years ago and enthusiastically received by the residents of Manchester. Mr. Becker has also been a frequent guest conductor for both concert bands and jazz bands in Missouri and Illinois. Mr. Becker has served as the Jazz Vice President for the Missouri Music Educators Association, the first educator to hold that position after it was established as a part of the MMEA Board. Mr. Becker is a Past President of the Missouri unit of the International Association of Jazz Educators. During his term he helped clarify the mission and goals of the unit, and endeavored to reach out to music educators, those in the music industry, and professional players to create a broader base of support for jazz education. Becker has also served as Jazz Vice President for the St. Louis Suburban Music Educators Association. Becker plays the trumpet professionally with a variety of ensembles in the St. Louis area, and has taught trumpet privately in both the Kansas City and St. Louis areas. Mr. Becker is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Missouri Music Educators Association, the Missouri Association for Jazz Education, the Missouri Band Masters Association, and Phi Beta Mu Band Directors Fraternity. He was named "Charles Emmons Outstanding Band Director of the Year" by Phi Beta Mu in January, 1999. He was nominated numerous times for the Pillar of Parkway Award, which recognizes commitment and dedication for work in the Parkway School District, and was awarded a Pillar of Parkway in April, 2016.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR

Dr. Erica J. Neidlinger is Associate Professor and wind conductor at DePaul University in Chicago. Additional responsibilities include teaching courses in wind history and repertoire, conducting courses, and instrumental music education courses. Dr. Neidlinger’s conducting experiences are broad, ranging from chamber ensembles, contemporary ensembles, symphonic bands, and wind ensembles. She has worked with some of the finest musicians in Chicago as featured artists with the DePaul ensembles. In addition, Dr. Neidlinger has conducted performances across the United States and in Europe. She has traveled to Singapore and Canada as an ensemble adjudicator and has been featured as a guest conductor and clinician in Riga, Latvia and Moscow, Russia. Presentations at international conferences include the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. She has conducted honor bands and presented at many conferences across the United States. She also maintains a highly active schedule as a clinician for ensembles visiting Chicago.

Before her position at DePaul, Dr. Neidlinger served on the faculty of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where she conducted university concert ensembles and directed the marching band. She has been a member of the band and music education faculty at The Ohio State University and has also served as conductor of the Nebraska Wind Symphony. Neidlinger completed her doctoral degree at the University of Minnesota under the supervision of Professor Craig Kirchhoff. Her research applies Laban’s Effort Shape Theory to the expressive development of conductors.

A BOUT T HE C ONDUCTOR Holly Barber has been the choral director at The Principia School for over ten years. She conducts the Upper School Concert Choir and Chamber Singers and the Middle School Boys Choir, is co-director of the Middle School Combined Choir, and is the vocal director for the school musical. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Principia College; Level III Certification in Choral Teacher Education from the CME Institute; and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from California State University, Los Angeles, through which her master’s project report, Women in the Spotlight: A Survey of Female Composers for Middle and High School Choirs, was recently published. She is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association, Missouri Choral Directors Association, the Missouri Music Educators Association, and the National Association for Music Education. In addition to her teaching responsibilities at Principia, Ms. Barber is co-soloist at First Church of Christ, Scientist Kirkwood and performs regularly as a vocalist and bassist with two St. Louis area bands: the Main Street Remnants and The Bonbon Plot. Her hobbies include photography, reading, and Hamilton karaoke.

ABOUT THE ACCOMPANIST Karen Kaibel is the vocal music teacher and the fine arts team leader at Parkway Southwest Middle School, where she also serves on the shared leadership team. She holds a master’s degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. Mrs. Kaibel was a teacher at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis Summer Camp from 2011–2013, a director of The St. Louis Children’s Choirs’ Summer Camp in 2012 – 2017, and has taught private lessons in voice and piano for many years. She has also conducted and accompanied for local and regional honor choir events as well as directed Chorale for the St. Louis Children's Choir from 2011 to 2017.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Caleb Zustiak has been a choir director in the Festus R-6 School District for the past 17 years. Caleb graduated Summa Cum Laude from Southeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Music Education and was the recipient of the Governor’s Scholarship, Carol Langely Teaching Award, and won the ACDA Conducting Competition. Caleb is an MCDA Prelude Award recipient, received the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award in 2011, and spent several years as the East Central District Junior High Vocal Vice-President. He has conducted several Honor Choirs and has also given clinics on the changing adolescent voice at several local Universities. The Festus Middle School Concert Choir previously performed at the MMEA Conference/In-Service in both 2008 and 2012. Mr. Zustiak has been married to his wonderful wife Kim for 17 years and they enjoy many things, especially running marathons together. They have two beautiful children, Connor and Riley, who both love playing soccer, singing in choir, and taking up all of their parents’ free time.

ABOUT THE ACCOMPANIST Lori Scissors is an elementary music specialist for Ritenour School District. Lori holds graduate degrees in music and in teaching. Lori maintains a private piano studio and serves as director of music at a local church.
