leslieWhen wilcoxmy daughter Maile was young, she didn’t draw a connection between the featheredPresident animals& CEO she’d seen in picture books and the main dish on the dinner table.

One evening the realization hit. Her little face contorted as she asked her elders incredulously, “You mean chicken is...chicken?”

I thought of that while“You catching a bit ofmean my favorite newer chicken PBS children’s show, is... chicken?” . Four-year-old Sid was surprised to learn from his grandmother that food doesn’t come in packages from the store – it’s grown on lands and harvested from bodies of water. Sid the Science Kid But intergenerational learning works both ways. Keiki are showing their grandparents how to punch up PBS Kids shows on the computer instead of turning on the television; they’re creating digital art and sending video by cell phone; and they’re delighting aun- ties and uncles with phone apps like Shazam, which tell radio listeners the name of the song that’s playing and who’s singing it. 3

I have a friend who knows Hawaiian chants going back many generations. She took her nine-year-old son to Nuuanu to show him the site of an historic last stand in a key battle to unite the Hawaiian islands. The boy asked to use her cell phone and Googled a fascinating account of troop build-up and military strategy. Mom wasn’t aware of that perspective. She and her son will never forget the power of this shared experience, which was more potent because both contributed to it.

Here at PBS Hawaii, we have programming for everybody from pre-schoolers to senior citizens. With our community outreach events, the interactivity of our website, and gatherings across the state to prepare for our statewide student news network, we love seeing the transfer of knowledge and intergenerational cross-pollination.

Little Maile finally accepted that chicken is chicken.Hiki N –o took his grandmother’s advice and chose fresh blueberries instead of frosting on his birthday cake. And–Shazam!–people of all ages can share and discover with each other. Sid the Science Kid Sincerely,

Leslie Wilcox took the helm of PBS Hawaii as President and CEO in March 2007, after a long and varied career in Hawaii’s broadcast and print news media. She's committed to "breaking the glass" of the TV monitor to engage with people in all of >>> our communities, including online. 4
