  • Incandescent: Light Bulbs and Conspiracies1
Dr Grace Halden recently completed her PhD at Birkbeck, University of London. Her doctoral research on science fiction brings together her interest in philosophy, technology and literature. She has a range of diverse VOLUME 5 NUMBER 2 SPRING 2015 publications including an edited book Concerning Evil and articles on Derrida and Doctor Who. [email protected] Article Incandescent: 1 Light Bulbs and Conspiracies Grace Halden / __________________________________________ Light bulbs are with us every day, illuminating the darkness or supplementing natural light. Light bulbs are common objects with a long history; they seem innocuous and easily terminated with the flick of a switch. The light bulb is an important invention that, as Roger Fouquet notes, was transformational with regard to industry, economy and the revolutionary ability to ‘live and work in a well-illuminated environment’.2 Wiebe Bijker, in Of Bicycles, Bakelites and Bulbs (1997), explains that light bulbs show an integration between technology and society and how these interconnected advancements have led to a sociotechnical evolution.3 However, in certain texts the light bulb has been portrayed as insidious, controlling, and dehumanising. How this everyday object has been curiously demonised will be explored here. Through looking at popular cultural conceptions of light and popular conspiracy theory, I will examine how the incandescent bulb has been portrayed in dystopian ways.4 By using the representative texts of The Light Bulb Conspiracy (2010), The X-Files (1993-2002), and Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow (1973), I will explore how this commonplace object has been used to symbolise the malevolence of individuals and groups, and the very essence of technological development itself.

The Bosom Serpent Legend Through History: How The Legend Changes To Address Modern Anxieties – Artifacts Journal - University of Missouri University of Missouri A Journal of Undergraduate Writing The Bosom Serpent Legend Through History: How The Legend Changes To Address Modern Anxieties Laine McCall In its simplest form, the Bosom Serpent legend complex includes any story in which a person believes that an animal is living inside of their body. Normally the animal is a snake or lizard, although amphibians and worms are becoming the most common in modern variants (Bennett). Most Bosom Serpent legends begin in the same way: a person mysteriously becomes sick and complains that it feels like something is squirming around inside of them. Then, the patient goes to the doctor and explains that they believe a live animal is inside of them. The doctor does not believe the patient and sends them home. At this point, there are two common ways that Bosom Serpent legends will continue. In one of the common versions of the legend, the patient takes the doctor’s advice and tries to ignore the pain and suffering. Eventually the patient dies and when a medical examiner opens up the body, animals are found inside of the victim. In the other common ending to the legend, the patient is dissatisfied with his or her doctor’s advice and seeks help from someone who practices natural or traditional healing. The traditional healer, often portrayed as a “witch-doctor,” instructs the patient on http://artifactsjournal.missouri.edu/...-serpent-legend-through-history-how-the-legend-changes-to-address-modern-anxieties/[9/15/2014 1:15:57 PM] The Bosom Serpent Legend Through History: How The Legend Changes To Address Modern Anxieties – Artifacts Journal - University of Missouri how to coax the animal out usually using food.

  • Aubrey Parke: an Enthusiastic Amateur in Fiji?
Aubrey Parke: An Enthusiastic Amateur in Fiji? Matthew Spriggs Over the next 16 years [after Gifford’s 1947 project] the only archaeological work was carried out by enthusiastic amateurs. One of these was Aubrey Parke… (Best 1993:396) Background and Career Aubrey Laurence Parke was born on 11 November 1925, the son of Laurence Stanley Parke (1890–1940) and Mildred Frances Parke. He was born some two years after his father participated in the Dorset Minor Counties Cricket Championship team. Aubrey—no mean hand with the bat himself—came from a long line of cricketers, his grandfather Laurence P. Parke (1860–1929) having participated in the same Counties championship in 1902. Aubrey’s father was the only one of three cricketing brothers to have survived the Great War, and Aubrey was presumably named after one of the two that didn’t return, John Aubrey Parke (1892–1915). The third brother was Walter Evelyn Parke (1891–1914), who merited an obituary in Wisden such was his prowess on the pitch as a left-handed batsman. The family had a military and legal background, which included service in places such as the Crimea, Jamaica and even a diplomatic posting in Mexico.1 Aubrey was born in Moreton, Dorset, while the previous few generations hailed from Henbury House in Sturminster Marshall parish, near Wimborne. Henbury House had been bought in 1847 by his great-great-grandfather Charles (born Jamaica 1791). The family are traceable back to Whitbeck Hall in Cumberland in the 1620s. His father Laurence Stanley Parke took up the position of Commissioner of Police in Aden, then a British colony, leaving the family, including a younger sister Bridget, to be raised by relatives.

Without these documents, the best investigative reporting in the world could not have produced a book, and the secrets of CIA mind-control work would have remained buried forever, as the men who knew them had always intended. From the documentary base, I was able to expand my knowledge through interviews and readings in the behavioral sciences. Neverthe- less, the final result is not the whole story of the CIA's attack on the mind. Only a few insiders could have written that, and they choose to remain silent. I have done the best I can to make the book as accurate as possible, but I have been hampered by the refusal of most of the principal characters to be interviewed and by the CIA's destruction in 1973 of many of the key docu- ments.
