If this does not produce a result, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If, during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double. If no goals are scored during extra time, kicks from the penalty mark determine which club qualifies for the next stage. The eight winners of the round of 16 ties go into the quarter-finals, the draw for which will be made in Nyon on 15 March; the semi-final and final draws follow on 12 April. The quarter-finals will be played on 2/3 and 9/10 April with the semi-finals on 23/24 April and 30 April/1 May. This year's UEFA Champions League final is at Wembley Stadium, London on 25 May 2013. • Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case of repeated cautions, a player is suspended for one match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc). Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season. Exceptionally, all yellow cards and pending yellow-card suspensions expire on completion of the play-offs. They are not carried forward to the group stage. Cautions and pending yellow-card suspensions from club competition matches expire at the end of the season. • RESPECT and jersey exchange: During this season's UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League matches UEFA's RESPECT campaign is focusing on the jersey exchange between players. This ritual is believed to have begun in 1931 when France beat England for the first time. The French players were so ecstatic to have won they asked the English players if they could have their jerseys as keepsakes and the English obliged. Today swapping shirts is common practice in football, with players often pre-defining between themselves who they will exchange their jerseys with after the match. Through this simple act players show sportsmanship and acceptance for their opponents. UEFA has incorporated this gesture into its RESPECT campaign. By linking RESPECT with swapping shirts, we are hoping to make a connection with players and fans alike, encouraging all to swap jerseys as symbol of their RESPECT for diversity in football. It is differences in football that make the game so unique. • Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and since 2007/08, at least eight places have been reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half could be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list continues to exist – involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthday. In 2006/07 the number of locally-trained players required began at four but rose to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained. A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21. • Player registration: UEFA regulations state that a player may not play in a UEFA club competition for more than one club in the course of the same season. However, a player who has been fielded in the first, second or third qualifying round or the play-offs of the UEFA Champions League is entitled to play for another club as from the group stage. Moreover, as from the start of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players. One player of those three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded in the same competition for another club or for another club that is currently in the same competition. • Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. • The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home. • Twenty-two ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • In all, 21 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three round of 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • Thirteen ties have gone to penalties, including six finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The first two-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 round of 16, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg.
