Canadian Guiding Badges And Insignia Brownie Six/Circle Emblems Following the introduction of the Brownie program to provide Guiding for younger girls, and after the decision to base the new program on The Brownie Story, a further decision was made in 1919 to subdivide a Brownie Pack into smaller groups consisting of six girls. These smaller groups within the Pack were known as Sixes and were identified by a Six emblem bearing the name of some mythical fairy- like person from folklore. [Reference: POR (British, 1919)] The original Six emblems were brown felt; later versions were brown cotton with the edges bound in brown. In 1995, the term “Sixes” was replaced by the term “Circles”, and the shape of the emblems was changed as well. In 1972, three of the original twelve Six emblems were retired and in 1995 four new ones were added. This document was only internally reviewed for technical accuracy. This is version 2 of A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum Web Publication 2 first published online in 2016. The Copper Pavilion at the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum exhibits a 19-ton mass of native copper recovered on the bottomland of Lake Superior on permanent loan from the State of Michigan, Department of Natural Resources. Discovery This Guinness World Record holding tabular mass of native copper, weighing approximately 19 tons, was recovered from the bottomlands of Lake Superior and is now on exhibit in the Copper Pavilion at the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum of Michigan Tech referred to here as the "Lake Copper." Figure 1: Location of the Lake Copper shown in context with the generalized bedrock geology along the flank of the Midcontinent rift system (after Bornhorst and Lankton, 2009). 1 It was discovered in July of 1991 by local divers Bob Barron and Don Kauppi on the bottomlands of Lake Superior in about 30 feet of water northwest of Jacob’s Creek, Great Sand Bay between Eagle River and Eagle Harbor (Figure 1 and 2). The tabular Lake Copper was horizontal when discovered rather than vertical in the vein as it had fallen over. -

Ram, Wayne State University n the morning of July 24, 1915, hundreds of employees of the West- Oern Electric Company and their families boarded the passenger steamship Eastland for a day trip to Michigan City, Indiana. Built in 1903, this twin screw, steel hulled steamship was considered a fast boat on her regular run. Yet throughout her service life, her design revealed a series of problems with stability. Additionally, changes such as more lifeboats in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster, repositioning of engines, and alterations to her upper cabins, made these built-in issues far worse. These failings would come to a disastrous head at the dock on the Chicago River. With over 2,500 passengers aboard, the ship heeled back and forth as the chief engineer struggled to control the ship’s stability and failed. At 7:30 a.m., the Eastland heeled to port, coming to rest on the river bottom, trapping pas- sengers inside the hull and throwing many more into the river. -

A Definition of olklorF e: A Personal Narrative Abstract My definition of folklore as "artistic communication in small groups" was forged in the context of folklore studies of the 1960s, in the discontent with the definitions that were current at the time, and under the influence of anthropology, linguistics - particularly 'the ethnography of speaking' - and Russian formalism. My field esearr ch among the Edo people of Nigeria had a formative impact upon my conception of folklore, when I observed their storytellers, singers, dancers and diviners in performance. After the ‘discovery’ of African pygmies in the 1860s, little people became a powerful way of imaginatively connecting to an inconceivably distant past, and the place of humans within it. Little people in fin de siècle narratives have been commonly interpreted as atavistic, stunted warnings of biological reversion. I suggest that there are other readings available: by deploying two nineteenth-century anthropological theories – E. B. Tylor’s doctrine of ‘survivals’, and euhemerism, a model proposing that the mythology surrounding fairies was based on the existence of real ‘little people’ – they can also be read as positive symbols of the tenacity of the human spirit, and as offering access to a sacred, spiritual, or magic, world. -
Who Murdered Joe Magarac?
doi:10.7592/FEJF2014.59.kovacevic WHO MURDERED JOE MAGARAC? Ivan Kovacevic Abstract: The article examines the origin of an American steel industry mythical hero, Joe Magarac. The analysis is based on the original text by Owen Francis from 1931 and aims to resolve a dilemma – whether the text is genuine folklore or fakelore. The analytical method is layered and varied; it involves comparing Francis’s text to other elements of folklore from the host country, confronting the meaning of the legend of Joe Magarac with the genuine interests of steelworkers, and contextualising the legend in the social conflicts of the steel industry in Pennsylvania at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Keywords: America, Joe Magarac, immigrants, mythical hero, Pittsburgh, steel industry, workers THE BIRTH OF JOE MAGARAC Bearing in mind that Joe Magarac, a significant American figure of Pittsburgh steel plants, is considered both a folklore and fakelore hero, it is reasonable to expect that there would be at least three stories about his birth: one of folklore, another of fakelore, and a folkloristic tale. As far as the last one is concerned, folklorists find that Joe Magarac was born in a folklore story and his emergence can be traced as early as the year 1931, to the text by Owen Francis published in Scribner’s Magazine, in which Joe Magarac was first mentioned. Francis’s initial version of Magarac’s story places his birth in a steel ore mountain or steel mine. However, by introducing Dorson’s notion of fakelore and by applying that notion to the stories of Paul Bunyan and Joe Magarac, the folklore basis of this character is negated, thus leaving his origin a blur. -

Jestice/English 1 Urban Legends An urban legend, urban myth, urban tale, or contemporary legend is a form of modern folklore consisting of stories that may or may not have been believed by their tellers to be true. As with all folklore and mythology, the designation suggests nothing about the story's veracity, but merely that it is in circulation, exhibits variation over time, and carries some significance that motivates the community in preserving and propagating it. Despite its name, an urban legend does not necessarily originate in an urban area. Rather, the term is used to differentiate modern legend from traditional folklore in pre-industrial times. For this reason, sociologists and folklorists prefer the term contemporary legend. Urban legends are sometimes repeated in news stories and, in recent years, distributed by e-mail. People frequently allege that such tales happened to a "friend of a friend"; so often, in fact, that "friend of a friend has become a commonly used term when recounting this type of story. Some urban legends have passed through the years with only minor changes to suit regional variations. One example is the story of a woman killed by spiders nesting in her elaborate hairdo. More recent legends tend to reflect modern circumstances, like the story of people ambushed, anesthetized, and waking up minus one kidney, which was surgically removed for transplantation--"The Kidney Heist." The term “urban legend,” as used by folklorists, has appeared in print since at least 1968. Jan Harold Brunvand, professor of English at the University of Utah, introduced the term to the general public in a series of popular books published beginning in 1981. -
