ISSN : 91-001139 0 '1 The first poem was written when Chris returned from several weeks of being with his mother as she lay dying of cancer in the hospital. Born Again In the paper thinness of the early morning, she turned to gaze through the window toward the dawning of the timeless beyond. As she breathed her last breaths, which were like newborn breaths, the room grew so incredibly silent, stillfilling with morning light. Where is she now? Like an expectant fatherI awaited her new beginning, my joy and my grief entwined like naked lovers bathing in sun-drenched fog. As she left I kissed her hand, wrapped her gifts loosely in my hearicloth, and made the room ready for her guests. Where is she now? Be Still! Be still! Let the breath breathe you. Unfocus the eyes and see without looking. Listen within (without)listening. What we call reality is a silver stranded web woven by night spiders. In the morning,, be still! and embrace the web. The delicate thread will not break. This is God's promise! - i - EDITORIAL COMMENT: This issue of EKOAE, which is being put together during both the Advent and Hannukah seasons, is your editor's response to the increasingly horrifying events that seem to be taking place in the world.It feels very important to me to assert the goodness that still works among us in countless forms at a time when so many human beings appear to me to be choosingintentionally or inadvertentlyto express themselves destructively, in varying degrees up to and including death, of the self or of others. It has been said many times that children are the future of mankind.Thus, itis among the children that acts of love and tenderness have their most exalted expression, working as beacons of light for human beings by which they may find their way. The Free School in Albany is one such center of light.One feels it immediately on entering the building.Many, many alternative schools are equally special.It is to the existence of such places that this journal owes whatever relevance it may have in shaping the future of our world. I have included photographs taken by Betsy Mercogliano at our school and poems written by her husband Chris as symbols of this peace and light. The articlesinthis issue represent a spectrum of the possible and the actual in helping to create a more hopeful future.In my view, the responses made by each of these writers, representing as they do, the integrity and heart-centered purpose of each of them, are infinitely more significant, for this fact, than merely in terms of the objective content they are representing.

    Antoni Górny Appalling! Terrifying! Wonderful! Blaxploitation and the Cinematic Image of the South Abstract: The so-called blaxploitation genre – a brand of 1970s film-making designed to engage young Black urban viewers – has become synonymous with channeling the political energy of Black Power into larger-than-life Black characters beating “the [White] Man” in real-life urban settings. In spite of their urban focus, however, blaxploitation films repeatedly referenced an idea of the South whose origins lie in antebellum abolitionist propaganda. Developed across the history of American film, this idea became entangled in the post-war era with the Civil Rights struggle by way of the “race problem” film, which identified the South as “racist country,” the privileged site of “racial” injustice as social pathology.1 Recently revived in the widely acclaimed works of Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) and Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), the two modes of depicting the South put forth in blaxploitation and the “race problem” film continue to hold sway to this day. Yet, while the latter remains indelibly linked, even in this revised perspective, to the abolitionist vision of emancipation as the result of a struggle between idealized, plaintive Blacks and pathological, racist Whites, blaxploitation’s troping of the South as the fulfillment of grotesque White “racial” fantasies offers a more powerful and transformative means of addressing America’s “race problem.” Keywords: blaxploitation, American film, race and racism, slavery, abolitionism The year 2013 was a momentous one for “racial” imagery in Hollywood films. Around the turn of the year, Quentin Tarantino released Django Unchained, a sardonic action- film fantasy about an African slave winning back freedom – and his wife – from the hands of White slave-owners in the antebellum Deep South.

    Anticommunist Hysteria The Cold War, 2000 From U.S. History in Context SOVIET ESPIONAGE During the Cold War, adversarial states employed a variety of means to further their quest for national security and to gain advantage over rival nations. Among these means were spying and intelligence gathering. Well before the onset of the Cold War, the Soviet Union developed a sophisticated and determined campaign of spying and infiltration against the Western powers, particularly Great Britain and the United States. Taking advantage of the openness of the Western democracies, as well as the communist adherence or sympathies of some key British and American citizens, the Soviet Union gleaned crucial information on political and technological developments. When revelations of Soviet spying became public in the West, a wave of anticommunist hysteria set in during the first decade of the Cold War. Already angered by the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe, and stunned by the "fall" of China to communism, millions of Americans now came to believe not only that Soviet-led communism menaced world order, but that it threatened the security of the United States itself. Americans overreacted, conducting a reckless purge of government, businesses, universities, and other arenas of both private and public life in a prolonged campaign against alleged domestic subversion. The campaign uncovered some genuine spies, but it also destroyed the lives of many more innocent individuals, gave rise to many demagogues in national politics, and turned the nation sharply to the right, thereby narrowing the boundaries of political debate in the United States. On the whole, it constituted the single greatest assault on civil liberties in U.S.
