Cover image: Pictured is a scanning electron micrograph depicting a second-order nanolattice of octahedra composed of small repeating octahedron unit cells. To test the mechanical properties of hierarchical 3D nanostructures in various materials, Lucas R. Meza et al. fabricated nanolattices out of polymer, hollow ceramic, and ceramic–polymer composites with up to three orders of fractal-like structural hierarchy, and found that the hierarchical nanolattices exhibited enhanced strength, stiffness, and recoverability following deformation, compared with nonhierarchical structures. Further, additional hierarchy beyond second order was not beneficial in terms of strength or stiffness. The results suggest that hierarchical architectures, such as those found in bone or in the Eiffel tower, can confer favorable prop- erties even at the nanometer scale as components in structural metamaterials.
