The following is an edited version of his report re- leased February 2014.

Personnel The Regiment's current strength is 254 serving military members. The increase is due to new enrolments of recruits, sworn in during January 2014.

Activities (February): The Regiment continued to focus its training nights in February on winter warfare tactics, tech- niques and procedures. A separate communique will be sent to the Regimen- tal Council to solicit final advice on these two items. Two outstanding items remain: Funding to close the final gap for this project and also a determination of the wording/inscriptions to represent the Regiment on the Side Panels. I owe a com- munique to the Regimental Council to solicit final advice on these two items. Regimental Council - The next meeting is TBC by Hon LCol Voss. DIEPPE MEMORIAL & CHANGE OF RSM PARADE 26 SEP 2013 This year, the Dieppe Memorial Parade was conducted in conjunction with the Change of Regimental Sergeant Major at Armoury on Thursday 26 Sep 2013. Val Flynn brought several Veterans from Sunnybrook Hospital to participate in the Memorial Parade. Royal Regiment Veteran Norman Baker, his wife Eileen and daughter Janice also attended. A Service of Remembrance was conducted followed by a March Past of the WWII Veterans in attendance. Wreaths were laid by representatives of the Veterans, Officers, WO & Sgts and the Association, in memory of our fallen Comrades. The Regiment then conducted the change of RSM from CWO Nick Webb CD to CWO David Turnbull CD. The salute on the March Past was taken by the Veterans and the Honorary LCol Kenn Voss, CD. Senior members of our regiment have often been called upon by higher com- mand to take on additional opportunities and challenges. We are proud to ad- vise you that CWO Nick Webb CD has accepted the opportunity to be the Regi- mental Sergeant Major of the Toronto Scottish Regiment (Queen Mother’s Own). RSM Webb joined the Regiment for the All Ranks Dinner and was wear- ing his kilt. This confirmed two things, we develop outstanding leaders in the Regiment and RSM Webb’s knees don’t look too bad in a kilt. NEW EDITOR FOR OUR NEWSLETTER We would like to take this opportuni- ty to thank Martha Clark for her dedication and hard work. As our Editor for All Ranks Dinner (left to right) CWO Nick the past 28 years, Martha made a significant difference in ensuring all our Webb, RSM (ret’d) John Clark, RSM (ret’d) members were informed of events within the Association and our Regiment. Ross Atkinson, Capt (ret’d) Bruce Barbeau, Martha’s support as Editor and her photographic skills at the Reunion Dinner and WO (ret’d) Glen Moore. were truly appreciated. Thank you. Your new editor is Georgina Stafford. Georgina has picked up the torch and looks forward to your continued support. GOING GREEN We recognize a large number of our members are not comfortable behind the wheel of a computer. How- ever where possible, we are requesting our members receive their Newsletter via e-mail. Your support in this initiative will save the Association a considerable sum of money in printing and mailing costs. It also might save a tree. If you can support this request, please let us know and we will take you off the mailing list . 2

REUNION DINNER 9 NOV 2013 Once again, we enjoyed the opportunity to meet with old friends and members of the Regi- ment at the Sheraton Centre Hotel. One hundred and sixty members of the Regiment and Association attended, supported by thirty members of the Band. The evening commenced with two minutes of silence in memory of our Fallen Comrades and the Bugler played the Last Post & Reveille. BGen (ret’d) Gary Stafford OMM CD was the Master of Ceremony and did a great job! He moved the events along and completed the full program on schedule at 2130 hrs. Our Band under the direction of Capt Bill Mighton CD, played a wide selection of great music and was appre- ciated by everyone. We recognize the Royals’ Band as the finest Military Band in the Canadian Forces. A wonderful meal was served and the Commanding Officer, LCol Jesse Jones CD, reviewed the Regiment’s activities and praised the performance of members of the Regiment and Band. He also thanked members of the Asso- ciation for their support to the Regiment. This year guests were entertained with a slide presentation that ran through the duration of the meal. Pictures both old and new of past and serving members were displayed on a large screen as a back drop to the dinner. The initiative received positive comments and we will explore the possibility of utilizing two screens next year so that everyone will have a clear view. Capt Bruce Barbeau CD, then President of the Association presented a cheque for $1,000 to Capt Marsali Frederico CD, Com- manding Officer of our Cadet Corps, known as “Batoche Company,” LCol John Iversen CD, President of The Royal Regiment of Canada Foundation, presented LCol Jesse Jones with a generous cheque in support of the Regiment. Each year the Foundation pays the Regiment the interest earned from the Foundation’s capital investments. Only the inter- est is paid, not any of the capital. Not all Regiments enjoy this support and these funds provide the Commanding Officer with the flexibility to support his troops outside the sphere of Public Funding. Our Association Steward Russell Smart provided alcohol for medicinal purposes thus ensuring all guests were properly entertained before and after the dinner. This year’s 2014 dinner is being coordinated by WO Ali Hirji. Ali is a very skilled organizer and we look forward to his assistance in ensuring our con- tinued success . See you at the Sheraton Hotel on the 8th Nov 2014.

SCHOLARSHIPS Twenty-eight members of the Regiment & Cadets were awarded Scholarship Certificates which in- cluded a cheque for $400. Scholarship recipients also re- ceived a book on the battle of Vimy Ridge and on Dieppe POWs, both produced by Canadian Authors and published by Scholastic Canada. These books are intended to encourage young people to discover the pleasures of reading in spite of distractions of modern day electronics. Our scholarships are made possible by the generous donations of members of the Association and provide recognition and support to students serving in the Regi- ment and Cadets. They also provide an opportunity for Association families and friends to honour the memory of those who have served their Regiment and Canada in past.

OUR REGIMENTAL HOCKEY TEAM

You will be pleased to hear that the Regiment has its own Hockey Team and will play against other Regiments in the Brigade. In De- cember nineteen members of the Hockey Team laced-up their skates and took to the ice against the QOR hockey team who are the current 'B' Division Brockville Tournament Champions. The puck was dropped by the Honorary LCol of the QOR and our own LCol (ret'd) Dana Gidlow. (see picture below) The game was fast paced with action at both ends of the ice. Within the first five minutes we scored our first goal thanks to Pte Mine- ma. A few minutes later, Pte Papadamou scored making it 2 - 0. We maintained that lead until the last two minutes of the first period where Pte Papadamou scored his second goal. All three goals were scored from close range thanks to some excellent passing from their line-mates. We kept a 3-0 lead until the last fifteen minutes when the QOR scored their only goal from a scramble in front of our net. It was the only time they got close as we maintained a disciplined approach and kept the slot clear for Pte Gadoury to make a number of saves. As the clock wound-down, there was plenty of angst on the QOR bench which showed itself on the ice. However, we maintained our composure and focused on the end-state: defeating the 'B' Division Brockville Tournament Champions. We won and the game ended 3-1. On the 4th February we played against the Lorne Scots Hockey Team. It was our third game and we lost 3:2. We gave this formidable team a solid contest. Capt P Martinis

It might be possible to order additional Regimental hockey jerseys. If you are interested, please let us know

VETERANS’ WELFARE Important! If you know of any former member of the Regiment who may need our support, please let us know. We may be able to help or find someone who can. Call one of the Officers listed, or send an e-mail or note using the Reg- istration Form enclosed. Web site address: www.rregtc-assoc.ca VETERANS’ CONCERNS COMMITTEE (VCC) The Royal Regiment of Canada has started a Veter- ans' Concerns Committee (VCC) with a view of supporting, informing and helping members of the Reg- imental Family. This support ranges from contacts for sickness or bereavement, to information about changes in taxes and government regulations. It will also include information about commercial dis- counts and advantages available to Military members, past and present. Beyond that, the VCC com- mittee may recommend for the Association to support certain positive thrusts in veteran advocacy. For example, are you aware of the Canadian Forces Appreciation Program? The Program will provide you with a card that identifies you as a past or serving member of the Canadian Forces. Your member- ship is free and it will entitle you to discounts in travel and a number of other areas. Go to the follow- ing link/site or request further information through the Association. https://www.cfmws.com/en/OurServices/CFOne/Pages/ JoinNow.aspx The VCC is chaired by Alan Nanders, and is enriched by the wide-ranging experience of Gary Stafford, Ross Atkinson, Ron Saranic and Valorie Flynn who has been our stalwart supporter of the Vets at Sunnybrook. For sudden illnesses or bereavements Valorie Flynn and Ted Taylor would be the fastest contacts to make. For all other questions contact our chairperson, Alan Nanders, or other committee members. - Alan, lives in Kitchener; his phone number is 519-741-0005 and Alan's email is [email protected]. Val Flynn Phone: 416-242-4908 Email: [email protected] TO ALL D-DAY AND BATTLE OF NORMANDY VETERANS VAC has just announced a travel subsidy for D-Day and Battle of Normandy veterans. Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantino an- nounced Sunday that the Conservative government will pay UP TO $2,000.00 to help surviving veterans return to the site of the invasion which marked the turning point in the Second World War. MILITARY TRAINING THEN AND NOW In this section, we hope to provide you with insight into the training our reservists take today, compared to what we may have done in previous years. For example, I joined the Regiment as a private in 1970. Within a year, I was sent on the Junior Leaders Course to attain the rank of Corporal. The course was conducted at the armoury over five weekends. Today our leadership courses cover the same con- tent and duration as our regular force partners. Now the first leadership rank is Master Corporal. The course to become an Infantry MCpl is now called DP 2 PLQ – Primary Leadership Course. Personnel must meet the following prerequisites to be selected for the course: a. DP 2 Weapons Detachment Member; b. Be selected by the Unit CO; c. Be medically fit; and d. Battle Fitness Test must be current up to the last day of the course.

An Infanteer would then have to pass the following four MODs to become an Infantry Master Corporal: MOD 1 – Distance Learning (DL): 11 days MOD 2 – Residency: 9 days MOD 3 – Field: 15 days MOD 4 or otherwise known as PLQ-Infantry: 22 days (only for Infanteers)

As you can see, to successfully attain the rank of Master Corporal it now takes 57 days of training and a significant amount of determination and dedication by both the member and their families. However, while there is significant sacrifice, the re- wards and benefits are great. Our reserve members and leaders now stand shoulder to shoulder with their regular force counterparts, providing them the opportunity to lead both regular and reserve personnel in garrison and on overseas mis- sions. Were you aware that on average, 20 percent of our soldiers serving in Afghanistan were reservists from across Cana- da.

SMALL ARMS TRAINER (SAT) Through the gracious support of LCol Jones our members have been invited to participate on the Small Arms Trainer (SAT). Using computer technology and working replicas of the C7 Rifle, the SAT system realisti- cally provides members an opportunity to practice and improve their shooting and weapons handling skills. We anticipate that our members will utilize the SAT range between the hours of 7 and 8PM to facili- tate their attendance at our meetings. Dress is casual on the range and dress for the meeting will be Tie and Jacket. The SAT provides a great opportunity for us to experience current training systems and we welcome all association members to par-

SUPPORTING THE TROOPS On Sunday Jan 26th and Sunday Feb 23rd, Association Members provided coffee and do- nuts for members of our Regiment returning from weekend training. After a challenging weekend of training, our hospitality was well received. Thanks go out to our Association’s Sgt at Arms, Anton Vassiliou for purchasing and ensuring these items were transported to Fort York Armoury. Volunteers from our Association serve our troops and have an opportunity to inter- act with them. If you are interested in taking part in this activity, please check “Yes” on the registration form and mail it to us.

LOOKING BACK - CAN YOU NAME THE SOLDIERS IN THE PHOTOS BELOW? In keeping with our responsibility to maintain records of our Regimental past, we are now seeking and archiving photos of our members in their early years of service. To accomplish this, we are requesting members to send in an early picture of them in uniform. The date, location and the names of any other members in the photo would be appreciated. If mailed in, your picture will be returned at the earliest opportunity. We will display some of the pictures we receive and challenge you to guess who they are. Send your answer in and we will identify them in the next newsletter. We would like to thank WO (ret’d) Ted DICKER for graciously donating a portable hard drive on which to help store these and future photos. Good luck!

MONTHLY MEETINGS - FIRST “THURSDAY” OF EACH MONTH - SEP TO JUN Our change to Thursday nights has been very successful. The Commanding Officer and RSM normally stop by to say hello and the new Executive is getting established. In the near future, we hope to start receiving short lectures from members of the Regiment on a variety of subjects. The intent being to expand our knowledge of the current techniques and equipment used by current serving members. As usual, our meetings are conducted in the WOs & Sgts Mess. The doors open at 7:30 pm and the meeting starts at 8 pm. The average duration is approximately one hour, giving members the opportunity to socialize.
