Among the many women thus mobilised was Vera Brittain (1893-1970), who would later become a prolific writer, and active feminist and pacifist. In the summer of 1915, after experiencing war work at a local hospital, Brittain interrupted her studies at Somerville College, Oxford to become a fulltime V AD (Voluntary Aid Detachment). A few months later, she signed up to work at a military hospital.
