Th e funeral, the culmination of a week of mourning, took place at St Mary ’ s of the Angle on Morehouse Road. Th e congregation and many more, who could not fi t into the packed church, processed through Notting Hill to the West London Crematorium. Th e size and diversity of the crowd was a testament to the breadth of respect that Crichlow commanded. Th e mourners included the biggest names from Britain ’ s Black Power Movement including Howe, Althea Jones-Lecointe and her husband Eddie who had fl own in from Trinidad for the occasion, as well as Rhodan Gordon. Th ere were also more mainstream black activists and politicians such as Lee Jasper and Paul Boateng; the fi lm maker Horace Ové and hundreds of ordinary people, not political in any obvious sense, whose lives Crichlow had touched. Boateng gave the eulogy, recalling Crichlow ’ s activism, his smile, and his ‘ grace under pressure, and boy was there pressure ’ (Boateng 2010).

The Aftermath: 1918 to Present 34 Notes 40 Bibliographical Essay 47 Temperance was a major British issue until after World War I. Excessive drunkenness, not alcoholism per se, was the primary concern of the two parliamentary parties. When Lloyd George entered Parliament the two major parties were the Liberals and the Conservatives. Temperance was neither a problem that Parliament sought to~;;lv~~ nor the single issue of Lloyd George's public career. Rather, temperance remained within a flux of political squabbling between the two parties and even among the respective blocs within each Party. Inevitably, compromises had to be made between the dissenting factions. The major temperance controversy in Parliament was the issue of compensation. Both Parties agreed that the problem of excessive drunkenness was rooted in the excessive number of public houses throughout Britain.

European Parliament Elections 2014 RESEARCH PAPER 14/32 11 June 2014 Elections to the European Parliament were held across the 28 states of the European Union between 22 and 25 May 2014. The UK elections were held concurrently with council elections in England and Northern Ireland on 22 May. The UK now has 73 MEPs, up from 72 at the last election, distributed between 12 regions. UKIP won 24 seats, Labour 20, the Conservatives 19, and the Green Party three. The Liberal Democrats won only one seat, down from 11 at the 2009 European election. The BNP lost both of the two seats they had won for the first time at the previous election. UKIP won the popular vote overall, and in six of the nine regions in England. Labour won the popular vote in Wales and the SNP won in Scotland. Across the UK as a whole turnout was 35%. Across Europe there was an increase in the number of seats held by Eurosceptic parties, although more centrist parties in established pro-European groups were still in the majority. The exact political balance of the new Parliament depends on the formation of the political groups. Turnout across the EU was 43%. It was relatively low in some of the newer Member States. Part 1 of this paper presents the full results of the UK elections, including regional analysis and local-level data. Part 2 presents a summary of the results across the EU, together with country-level summaries based on data from official national sources.
