NWARC February 2012 newsletter page 4 News for Alfisti… NWARC February Club Meeting will be combined with the Enduro Karting Challenge on February 12th. Join us ay Sykart in Tukwila (17450 West Valley Hwy Tukwila 98188) We‘ll gather at 10:30 AM, prior to the racing event. Then stay for the challenge, raffle, lunch ($5.00 extra.) See details on page 7. Scheduled for Feb 18th in the UK, the Martin Webb Collection of 700 Alfa Romeo miniature cars, model kits, books, including three extremely rare, unopened, 1/8th scale Italian ‗Pocher‘ kits of the Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza, Alfa Romeo 8C 2600 Mille Miglia Scuderia Ferrari and an Alfa Romeo Spider Touring Gran Sport of 1932, each valued at around $750—$850 will be auctioned. This collection of plastic, die-cast, hand-built resin and white metal vehicles range from the 1920‘s to the present day, in 1/86, 1/43, 1/32, 1/24, 1/20, 1/18, 1/12 and 1/8 scale, with road cars and commercial vehicles as well as Le Mans, Targa Florio, Mille Miglia and Formula 1 all represented. Martin Webb loved Alfas and joined the Alfa Romeo Owners Club UK in 1993 after buying a 1967 Duetto. He had the car restored and went on to win numerous concours prizes. Since his wife, Mariann is handling the sale, we can only assume he passed away and isn‘t simply locked up somewhere. www.historics.co.uk Cafe Giulia 329 Main Street Lakeville, CT (860) 435-9765 cafegiuliact.com The first thing diners notice at Cafe Giulia, in Lakeville, is the little Italian race car parked on the lawn out front — a good landmark, but an even better teaser for what to expect inside. Like its namesake, the Alfa Romeo Giulia, the restaurant is compact and stylish. Cream-colored walls, contemporary drop-down lighting and 12 plain wooden tables plus outdoors are several wrought-iron tables with umbrellas during warmer weather. Robert Willis, the ex- ecutive chef and owner, first opened Cafe Giulia in 2009, in a much larger building nearby. Last spring he downsized, moving the restau- rant to a storefront on Main Street, close to Lime Rock Park, where he races vintage cars (that‘s his retired Alfa out front). He lives above the restaurant, which may be why Cafe Giulia feels more like a home than a business. The food is simple with a focus on house- made pastas married with fresh seasonal ingredients. And yet the one-page menu offers a surprisingly varied selection of intriguing regional dishes. 12/30 NY Times In Europe, 2011 was a very successful year for Alfa Romeo thanks in part to the Giuli- etta (The car that the new Dodge Dart is heavily based upon). Giuliettas represented 2.8% of all cars sold in Europe and 14.5% of all cars sold in Italy. They also sold well in France (more than 9,200 cars), England (more than 7,000 cars), and Germany (more than 6,300 cars); with worldwide orders totaling almost 140,000. About 90% of the sales are for cars fitted with the higher end options with around 50% opting for the sport package. For engines, 15% chose the 170 hp 1.4 MultiAir, and 35% chose the 105 hp 1.6 MultiJet engine. The most popular color is Ghiaccio White at 35% of the cars sold, while red came in around 6% of the total. The average age of Alfa buyers was 40 years old, 20% were women, 50% have families. Alfa Romeo credits the popularity to the car's elegance and practicality and to their keep- ing the promises made at launch: handling and driving pleasure, quality and contained operating costs, comfort and habitability, active and passive safety features. Though I look forward to Alfas return to these shores, the question is what they‘ll bring, and when.

Giuseppi Motorosi is Available Now! The miniature Alfa named Giuseppi Motorosi, from the movie Cars2, that I mentioned in last month‘s newsletter (Available only at Kmart), has made it to a rare store or two. I now have the 2 car package that contains Francesco Bernoulli and his Alfa crew chief Giuseppi, along with another one made of metal (parked in front right). The other fun treat is another miniature version that is made of wood (front left). Who knew that an Alfa would play a role in a cartoon, that they would make miniatures of it, and it would come in differing sizes and styles? It brings a smile to any collection of small cars, especially Alfa Romeos.

I have heard from reliable sources that some of the principles are interested in continuing their roles. Of course this event always requires a lot of peo- ple dedicated to helping, so please let any of your chapter officers know of your interest.

Many of you may know Scott Bradley, nationally certified track instructor and a tireless supporter and volunteer for NWARC, PCA, Corvette, Audi, BMW, Proformance, Swerve, just to name a few. Scott‘s daughter Kathryn “Panda” Bradley is 19-years old and has been battling Glioblastoma for most of her life, and she is now facing a very critical prognosis on her condition as of late last year. The treatment Kathryn needs is very specialized and is not entirely covered by the family‘s insurance. Please read the family‘s blog at: http://www.kathrynpandabradley.com/ and find out what they have been dealing with for quite some time. Here‘s where you come into the picture. By participating in this event, whether as a registered driver, spectator, sponsor or volunteer, you will have a direct affect on Kathryn's life and chances for obtaining the treatment she needs. While having fun we can certainly find some ways to gen- erate extra money to support the Bradley family. For those of you interested in donating inde- pendent of the Karting Enduro Challenge, please visit any Umpqua Bank and ask to make a de- posit into the Carol Bradley Family Fund. Event Sponsors – We‘re looking for generous individuals, companies and organizations to help us sponsor the event costs this year: Venue: Covers cost of Skykart track and kart rental ($1,750)  Catering: Covers cost of lunch and drinks for drivers and spectators ($250 - $300)  Event Shirts: Covers the cost of shirts and print production ($550 - $750, depending upon color and logo placement)  Trophies: Donated by Ridge Racing School Team/Lap Sponsorship – This year we thought it would also be fun to ask each driver and/or team to go out and get their own ―per lap‖ sponsorship in an effort to generate more donations for the Bradley Family. This will be simple, just ask your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors for a small pledge for each lap that your team completes... And of course you should promise them the overall win! Encourage them to view the Bradley family blog, and invite them to the event if they‘ve never seen wheel-to-wheel racing. Their dona- tions will go directly to the Carol Bradley Family Fund. There will be a prize awarded to the team which generates the highest per lap donation (to be announced).

Raffle Donations/Bidding: – We are scouring the area and blanketing our email lists in an effort to secure a few exciting items to raffle during the event. Hopefully our friends within the business community will come up with a few choice products and services, and if anyone has suggestions or contacts at companies that could donate a product or service for this raffle please contact Mirko Freguia ([email protected]) or Dennis Tyler ([email protected]). Also plan to bring your wallet and support the raffle at the event.

Please contact Mirko Freguia at [email protected] (206.795.0861) or Dennis Tyler at [email protected] if you are interested and able to help with any one of these opportunities. Please ―Like‖ the event on Facebook: www.facebook.com/pages/Karting-Enduro-Challenge-NWARC/291968848251?sk=wall

NWARC February 2012 newsletter page 8 The Alfa Bookshelf - Games by Gary Patitz

Whenever I go through the shelves of Alfa books one item always has a tendency of standing out, and it‘s not even a book. It‘s a small little red box that meas- ures some 5 1/2 inches square by 1 3/8 inches deep with silver and red writing that reads ―The Driv- ing Spirit Safety Game by Alfa Romeo.‖ It was a Milano promo- tional item that was available from Alfa Dealers back in 1987. Well I decided to take another look. In- side was a playing board folded into four sections, 64 cards, die, 4 playing pieces/pegs, and instruc- tions. The instructions were truly cringe worthy in their cuteness. In short the object of the game is to be the first player to accumu- late six cards that spell M-I-L-A-N- O. This is done by rolling the die, and answering a question on one side of a card. If you answer cor- rectly you get to keep the card. This isn‘t exactly brain surgery but not interesting enough to motivate me to call up a few friends and play a game. It did however, make me think of the mother of all automotive games, Mille Bornes. Now Mille Bornes (French for a thousand milestones, referring to the stone distance markers on many French roads) is a game I do remember having fun playing. It is a fast moving card game that is truly impressive in its simplicity. Wikipe- dia sums it up as follows – ―The premise of Mille Bornes is that the players are in a road race. Each race—or hand—is usu- ally 700 miles (or kilometers) long, but the first player to complete that distance exactly has the option to declare an ex- tension in which case the race becomes 1,000 miles. Mille Bornes is played with a special deck of cards. There are hazard, remedy, safety, and distance cards. Each hazard is corrected by a corresponding remedy, and is actually prevented from happening in the first place by a corresponding safety. The target distance is reached by playing distance cards.‖ A typical game with two to four players is around 15 to 20 minutes and can be played just about anywhere. Although the current edition is widely available, earlier versions, and its predecessor are highly collectable. As the game was revised the graphics on the cards were changed to reflect the time. In its first incarnation, Touring (originally pat- ented by the Wallie Dorr Company and produced in 1906), can be had at around $50 to $100 in good condition and in- cluding the original instructions. It‘s distinguishable by its single card sized red box and 100 ornate playing cards. Parker Brothers bought the rights to Touring in 1925. The subsequent 1926 version can be found with two different cov- ers with one more elaborate than the other. Expect to pay $15 to $20 for the simpler cover and $25 for the more decora- tive. Further revisions (with different covers) came in 1937, 1947, 1954, 1955, and 1965. Card count changed as hazard and mileage cards were added over the years. Any of these can generally be found for $10 to $20 in good to excellent condition with the instructions. The Mille Bornes variant of Touring was created in 1954 by Frenchman Edmond Dujardin. The only difference between the two was the addition of the coup-fourré, whereby bonus points are earned by holding back a safety card until an oppo- nent plays the corresponding hazard card . When Parker Brothers bought the American License to Mille Bornes in 1965, it discontinued Touring. Early versions of Mille Bornes (1962, 1971, 1976) can be had for as little as $10. A collector‘s edi- tion came out in 1999 with cards similar to the 1962 edition and can also be had for around $10. In the United States from 2000 on, the game has been distributed by Winning Moves Games under license from Hasbro. As for the The Driving Spirit Safety Game by Alfa Romeo, a good copy with all the pieces can be found for $10 to $20. I put mine back on the shelf where it probably will not be looked at for another five to ten years.

Join us for the annual Chili CookOff at Fred Wright and Kathy Lombardo's home. The chili is always fine, the com- petition keen and the winner is usually the same (Gordy). This year we need all the cooks to dig a bit deeper and bring that little extra special batch of Chili so we can crown a new champion this year. I have heard that several competitors have been working on their recipes since last year's event. Should be some tasty competition for sure. We are also adding a new twist this year by having a Corn Bread contest. Over the years, we have seen some really fine Corn Bread arrive with the Chili, so we are going to judge a champion for this category too. Bowls, spoons, real butter and soft drinks will be provided. Feel free to bring your favorite beer, wine or spirits as well. All the festivities start at 12 noon, Chili and Corn Bread judging begins at 1PM. The Daytona 500 will be on the big screen and the garage will be open for bench racing so hang around for the afternoon. If the weather is good, a walk on the beach is always an option. For Sale: 1978 Spider In her day she won People‘s Choice at a concours, led wine tours, and fueled that shifty Italian mystique with her intense lip-red gloss and top-down black cap. She was a hugger whose curves were perfection. Her embrace would caress you with tanned suppleness, and she responded to your every maneuver with a zooming passion that left you exhausted yet with a hunger for more; she could steer you astray, and her idle purr could drive you wild. The lady had class! Alas, cruising home from clubbing all these years and living on the streets has been cruel. She can still run with the pack but is embarrassed at her appearance; she‘s mechanically healthy but she‘s lost her ferocity for ve- locity. She‘s still loved, but her tattered wardrobe, rag tag cap, and furrowed countenance needs a makeover; she‘s fighting melanoma. In the right hands she could be rejuvi- nated to her prior exotic beauty, where her maturity would be admired. Her family says this they cannot do. Can YOU? Do you have the heart to adopt her into your family and drive her to your home for long-term care? It starts with a serious offer at or about $2,400 directed to Brenda or Bruce Blair in West Seattle, (206) 938-8190 or [email protected] .
