GAME RECAP – C OF I 10, DICKINSON STATE 1; DICKINSON STATE 4, C OF I 1: Chad Yeggy tossed eight strong innings and Tanner Hodges (Sisters, Ore. / Mount Hood CC) had four hits in the opener, but C.J. Ketron held The C of I to just three hits in the nightcap, as the Yotes and Dickinson State split a doubleheader Friday at Wolfe Field. The Coyotes won the opener, 10-1, extending their win streak to nine games, but DSU grabbed a 4-1 win in Game 2. Yeggy was outstanding for the Yotes, allowing just four hits in his longest outing of the season - retiring 15 of 16 batters at one stretch. The senior walked just one, hit a man, and struck out four. The Yotes used their speed in the opener, stealing eight bags. Tyler Andazola led off the first with a single, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a wild pitch. After the Blue Hawks tied the score on an Erik Bastio RBI single in the second, the hosts used a three-run third - including a Hodges bunt RBI single, to take a 4-1 lead. Nick Muncy (Caldwell, Idaho / Whitworth U.) slapped an RBI single through the left side in the fifth to make it 5-1. Back to back doubles by Andazola and Jeffrey Harris in the sixth, followed by a Hodges RBI single made it 7-1, with a three run seventh capping the scoring. Andazola went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, with Muncy and Brett Ward (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) each recording two hits. Zach Griffith went 2-for-4 for DSU, with starter Ryan Crossingham going six-plus innings, allowing 11 hits, but striking out eight. The Yotes took an early 1-0 lead in Game 2, as Andazola doubled off the left field wall and scored on a Zach Fabricius sacrifice fly - but Ketron handcuffed the Yotes the rest of the way. The right-hander allowed just one runner to reach third the rest of the way, getting some help by some timely defensive gems, to earn his first win. A two-out rally in the second gave DSU the lead for good, as Bastio singled to left and stole second. Jon Mendoza singled him home to tie the game. Ryan Riesse singled off the side of the mound, with the runners moving up on a wild pitch, with Tanner Newman following with a slow roller into the hole at short, beating Hodges' throw across the diamond to score Mendoza for the 2-1 lead. The Blue Hawks would make it 3-1 in the fifth on a two-out Derek Carley single, then tack on an unearned run in the sixth. The Coyotes had the tying run at the plate in the sixth, but pinch hitter Jarel Lewis (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) flew out to the warning track in left center. Mendoza went 2- for-3 with two RBI and Justin Elizando went 2-for-4 in the win for DSU, while Andazola went 2-for-2 in the loss for The C of I.

GAME RECAP – DICKINSON STATE 5, C OF I 3: A two-out, two-run single from Brock Murphy in the eighth inning provided the winning run, as Dickinson State rallied for a 5-3 victory over The C of I, Saturday at chilly Wolfe Field. The Blue Hawks got a two-out single from Zach Griffith and Erik Bastio walked. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third, with Murphy lining the base hit up the middle, erasing a 3-2 C of I lead. Jon Mendoza followed with an RBI double to deep left center field to make it 5-3. It was enough for Tanner Newman, who tossed a complete game – allowing single runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings. The righty allowed nine hits, walked one, and fanned five. The Coyotes got on the board in the first on an Izaac Garsez sacrifice fly, but DSU drew even in the fourth on a Murphy RBI single. Following a 42-minute delay due to a hailstorm, the Yotes regained the lead on a bases loaded double play grounder, but a Travis Setere RBI single evened the game in the fifth. The C of I took a 3-2 lead in the sixth on a Jeffrey Harris RBI single, but would not get a runner into scoring position the rest of the way. Setere went 3-for-5, with Murphy and Mendoza each logging two hits in the win for the Blue Hawks. Harris, Tanner Hodges, and Nick Muncy each had two hits for the Yotes.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 10, DICKINSON STATE 3: Cameron Packham (Kuna, Idaho / Kuna HS) and Jeffrey Harris each had three hits, leading The C of I to a 10-3 victory over Dickinson State in the final game of a four-game weekend series. The Coyotes took a 3-0 lead in the first, as Tanner Hodges roped an RBI double, Todd Griffiths (Meridian, Idaho / Lower Columbia CC) added an RBI single, with a third run scored on a failed pickoff move. The Yotes would make it 4-0 in the second on a Nick Muncy RBI single, pushing the margin to 7-1 in the third on RBI singles from Packham and Andrew Sewell (Lakewood, Wash. / Pierce CC). It was enough for Michael Garza, who tossed six innings of five-hit ball, striking out four men, picking up his second victory of the season. Tyler Andazola went 2-for-5 with two RBI, with Hodges adding a pair of hits for the Yotes, who salvaged a series split. Derek Carley went 3-for-5 in the loss for the Blue Hawks (3-5), with Travis Setere going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 5, NORTHWEST NAZARENE 1: Zach Fabricius threw eight innings of four-hit ball as The C of I defeated Canyon County rival Northwest Nazarene, 5-1, Tuesday at Elmore Vail Field. The win for the Coyotes was their 161st against the NCAA Division II Crusaders' since the 1930s - but the first meeting between the teams since the 2007 season. Izaac Garsez used RBI singles in the first and third innings to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead - as Fabricius was on cruise control. The lefty retired 14 men in a row until a bunt single in the seventh. NNU got on the board in the eighth, as Zach Steele hit his fifth home run of the year, but the Yotes plated three insurance runs in the ninth - two on a Cameron Packham double, and a third on a Tyler Andazola single. Fabricius struck out six men in picking up his third win, with Chad Yeggy tossing a 1-2-3 ninth. Andazola went 3-for-5 in the victory, with Packham and Garsez each recording two hits and two RBI.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 11, DICKINSON STATE 2; C OF I 10, DICKINSON STATE 6: Alexis Macias tossed a complete-game three-hitter in the opener, while combining to drive in seven runs on the afternoon, as The C of I swept a Saturday doubleheader from Dickinson State, 11-2 and 10-6, at Symms Field. The Lady Yotes battled a stiff breeze and a hailstorm to complete a sweep of a fellow NAIA team receiving votes in the national poll. Janell Laront got the Blue Hawks on the board in the first with an RBI single, but the Yotes evened the score on a Molly Mills RBI single in the bottom of the frame. The C of I scored a pair of unearned runs in the second to take the lead, before Erika Nowak singled in a run in the fourth to get DSU within a run. Macias broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run homer, her fourth of the year. A Kayla Webb (Garland, Utah / Bear River HS) RBI double in the fifth made it 7-2, with the Yotes ending the game due to the mercy rule in the sixth with four runs - capped by a two-run Jordan Huttash (Nampa, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) double. Mills and Kristen Haugen each had two hits for the Yotes - as Macias walked three and fanned four for her fourth win of the season. Game 2 started with a bang for The C of I, as a three-run Macias double was the big blow in a five-run first. Nikki Shumway led off the second with a homer and Haugen roped an RBI single to make it 7-0. DSU closed the gap to 7-4 in the fourth, as Jessica Huseby hit a three- run homer. The visitors would get within 9-6 in the fifth on a Lindsey Sullivan two-run shot, but an RBI double by Hannah Johnson gave the Yotes insurance. Kayla Park (Ontario, Ore. / Treasure Valley CC) went four-plus innings, allowing six runs on nine hits to earn her third win of the season. Johnson went 3-for-4 with three RBI, with Park and Shumway each logging two hits. Huseby, Sullivan, and Nicole Bertolacci each had two hits for DSU.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 7, DICKINSON STATE 4; C OF I 11, DICKINSON STATE 0: Alexis Macias roped a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth inning of Game 1, then pitched a three-hit shutout in Game 2, as The C of I completed a four-game sweep of Dickinson State, winning 7-4 and 11-0, Sunday at Symms Field. After the Blue Hawks got a two-run homer from Kristy Ortiz in the fourth and a squeeze bunt in the fifth to tie the score at 4-4, the Yotes rallied in the sixth as Kaci Baldwin and Molly Mills had back-to-back one-out singles. Macias followed with the single to center, scoring Baldwin, with Mills scored when the throw in from the outfield was wild. Kristen Haugen added an RBI double for insurance. Nickayla Skinner got the win, allowing just three hits and one earned run for the Yotes. Haugen had two doubles and three RBI - including a two-run double in a four-run first inning for C of I. Mills and Kayla Park each logged two hits in the victory. Game 2 was all C of I, as the Yotes sent 13 batters to the plate in the first - scoring eight runs. Mills and Hannah Johnson each had two-run singles in the frame. Nikki Shumway capped the scoring with an opposite field three-run homer in the fourth. Macias kept the Blue Hawks off balance - striking out four and walking just one, to pick up her fifth win of the season. Mills went 3-for-4 with Shumway going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI in the win.

GAME RECAP – OREGON TECH 79, C OF I 53: Oregon Tech opened the game on a 26-6 run and rolled to a 79-53 victory over The C of I in a CCC Men's Basketball Championships quarterfinal match-up last Wednesday in Klamath Falls, Ore. Tech hit 12 of their first 16 shots from the field, as Bobby Hunter scored 10 points and Scotty Riddle canned a pair of three's in the opening sprint. The Yotes would close within 35-24 on a Ben Van Lith (Eagle, Idaho / Coll. of Southern Idaho) basket with two minutes to play in the half, but a pair of turnovers led to two OIT scores, as the hosts led 39-24 at the half. A Rodney Delgardo (Seattle, Wash. / Spokane CC) dunk got C of I within 41-28 early in the second half, but a David Clarke triple and a three-point Hunter play extended the margin back above the 20-point mark. Hunter led all scorers with 18 points, with Riddle scoring 14. OIT made 56-percent of their field goal attempts, including 6-of-12 from outside the arc, while holding a commanding 34-20 edge on the glass. Seniors Krispin Banks and Matt Ballenger led the Yotes, with Banks scoring 13 points and Ballenger 11. The duo, along with Tyler Young (Leesburg, Va. / Boise State U.) and Jason Brown (Hagerman, Idaho / Whatcom CC) played in their final collegiate game.

ABOUT THE COACH: Rod Jensen completed his second season as head men's basketball coach at The C of I, recording a record of 23-37 as Coyote head coach. A year ago, his first Coyote team, which had just two returning starters, rallied from a tough start to win 9-of-12 games midway through the season and finish in a tie for fourth in the CCC standings. Jensen came to The C of I after five seasons at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he served as associate head coach for the last four years. Jensen has earned notoriety as a defensive coach, especially during his 19 years as a coach at Boise State University. From 1983-95, he was the top assistant to head coach, Bobby Dye, helping the Broncos rank among the Top-15 in the NCAA Division I in scoring defense for four-straight seasons, winning Big Sky regular-season championships in 1988 and 1989, along with Big Sky Tournament titles in 1988, 1993, and 1994. BSU teams advanced to the National Invitational Tournament in 1987 and 1991, and the NCAA National Tournament in 1988, 1993, and 1994. In 1995, Jensen became the head coach at Boise State - compiling a 109-93 overall record in seven seasons at the helm - recording the fourth-most wins in BSU history. During his tenure, the Broncos ranked among the NCAA Top-25 in scoring defense in 1998 and 1999, while winning the 1999 Big West East Division Championship. Jensen headed east in 2002, becoming an assistant coach for Pete Gillen at the University of Virginia, where he helped the Cavaliers to NIT appearances in 2003 and 2004 - leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in defensive field goal percentage. In 2005, he headed south to UNC-Greensboro, working for Mike Dement, where during his tenure, every player who exhausted their eligibility, graduated. A graduate of the University of Redlands in California, Jensen began his coaching career at his alma mater in 1980, serving as an assistant for two years, before spending one season at Penn State.
