ii 2012 DIRECTORY OF YOUTH PROVISION IN NEWHAM

Introduction

Background In September 2011 the Advance to Deliver (A2D) project decided to gather information about the borough’s youth provision as a practical resource for voluntary and community sector (VCS) groups planning projects and applying for funding. They wanted to map the amount, location and type of provision and get a sense of whether the level of provision was changing. To provide a useful picture, the mapping needed to include both voluntary and statutory sector provision and this was achieved through an informal partnership with Newham Youth Providers Partnership (NYPP). Coincidentally NYPP was planning to produce a directory of provision for young people and wanted to develop partnerships and links with VCS youth providers. This A2D/NYPP collaboration has led to a number of positive outcomes, reported later in this introduction.

How information was gathered for the first directory Information was gathered through an online survey widely distributed to voluntary and statutory sector youth providers in October and November 2011 via networks including NYPP, Newham Capacity Builders Working Group, Newham council and voluntary sector run community centres. This was sent to more than 200 organisations. We included any provider working with 11-19 year olds who attend voluntarily, including organisations working with young people, as part of more generic provision. The first directory contained details of 38 organisations - 31 from the voluntary sector and 7 statutory providers.

Why and how information was gathered for this update After the first version of the directory was circulated we received a number of requests from organisations wanting to be included. Since the A2D project was ending in July 2012 we decided to organise an update while funding was still available. We devised a flyer encouraging organisations to complete the online survey and circulated this widely, starting at the workshop in April. Providers already in the directory were sent their entry and asked to return any changes. Twelve of the original 38 providers updated their information and 26 new providers completed the survey, bringing the total in this update to 64 – 55 voluntary sector and 9 statutory.

Outcomes from this process

1. A basic Youth Provision Directory that maps provision and is useful for signposting, planning and fundraising. The first version was completed in March 2012 and this is an update.

2. A report that outlines the level, location and type of provision, completed in March 2012 is available from www.nvsc.org.uk/category/a2d. Key points include:

• Uneven geographical distribution of youth provision • Education, outings/trips and sports are the most common activities • Over half providers target specific groups of young people

1 2012 DIRECTORY OF YOUTH PROVISION IN NEWHAM

• Considerable uncertainty about future levels of provision and concern about the impact of funding cuts

3. A cross-sector workshop/event took place on April 19th to formally launch the directory and report, continue the mapping activity and explore how statutory and voluntary sector youth providers can work more closely together. A meeting about strategic planning for youth provision during the Olympics was organised by NYPP on 8th March 2012 and organisations in the directory were invited to this.

Next steps 59 providers have agreed to be included in NYPP’s more detailed directory aimed at young people. Contact details of those organisations wanting to be included have been passed to NYPP. 61 have agreed to receive information from Newham Youth Service about funding and training opportunities.

If you have any questions or comments about this directory, the survey or the workshops please contact Anne Crisp at Aston-Mansfield’s Community Involvement Unit on 020 8536 3822 or e-mail [email protected].

About the partners involved in the directory Advance to Deliver (A2D) supports community organisations in Newham. A team of three development officers work through Aston-Mansfield, NVSC and the Forum for Health and Well Being. Newham Youth Providers Partnership (NYPP) is a strategic planning partnership of statutory and third sector organisations delivering youth work in the borough that meets bi-monthly.

With support from local businesses and funding, it takes young people out to dine - a tool used to break the ice and get them talking and more recently, a visit to a golf club, residential and many more. The times we meet are not yet consistent due to the nature of our projects. Also influx of young people differs drastically.
