Project update

August 2015

Staffordshire County Council, BT and the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) are working in partnership to deliver superfast broadband services across as part of the national programme. The partnership will be investing £31million in the Superfast Staffordshire project, which will see 95% of the premises in the County gain access to superfast broadband by 2017. This includes an additional 4,000 premises that will benefit from the extra £2m funding recently announced.

The Superfast Staffordshire project is a major engineering undertaking, involving the upgrade of approximately 600 cabinets and requiring over one million metres of fibre optic cable to be laid.

To date the project has delivered 314 fibre cabinets, providing access to high-speed broadband services to over 57,000 homes and businesses across the County. More than 160 additional cabinets are currently in the process of been upgraded. You can find the latest list of the “live” cabinets here.

Recently BT announced that it was making available approximately £2.4m to the Superfast Staffordshire project to extend fibre coverage, and start to address the “final 5%”. This is as a result of higher than expected “take up” rates. The partnership will work closely on the detail, modelling a solution and will communicate the outcome over the coming months.

Over the coming weeks several members of the project team are taking a well- earned break. Responses to queries may take a little longer, and the Twitter feed may not be quite so active, please bear with us.

However Openreach engineers and their partners will be working as hard as ever to upgrade exchange areas as soon as possible. We’ll continue to share the latest information on the rollout www.superfaststaffordshire.co.uk and via Twitter @superfaststaffs Cabinets experiencing engineering challenges include:

Glossary

Complex civil engineering Engineering work is undertaken to build, maintain or repair infrastructure. This may be required for a variety of reasons such as blocked / broken ducts, installation of new ducts, desilting underground infrastructure to name a few. Very often traffic management schemes and diversions will be required.

Coming soon Majority of civil works have been completed, leaving final connection and commissioning for completion.

Duct Underground tube to carry the fibre

DSLAM Fibre cabinet EO Exchange only line. Requires both copper and fibre cabinets to be built.

PCP Copper cabinet

Re-plan Original plan has encountered significant issues that cannot be overcome, so a re-plan is required to deliver services another way.

Spine Fibre optic connection between the cabinet and the exchange.

Traffic Management Statutory requirement to ensure safe working operations on the highways. It is responsibility of the local authorities to coordinate activity and minimise disruption. If roads are to be closed a three month notice period is required to organise and plan diversions. Emergency services require time to make the necessary alternate arrangements.

Wayleave It's a written legal agreement between Openreach and the land/property owner that grants access to install, maintain or repair the network equipment.

Work in progress No specific issues identified, although timing has been changed to smooth delivery.
