He was the eldest child of John and Louisa Gray’s 15 children. Two of Victor’s younger brothers (Freddie and Ronald) died early. The family were united in their grief and the older children shared a strong bond. Victor, Gladys and Charlie were very close. The youngest child, Athol, was born just before Victor and Charlie went to Claremont Camp for training. Victor grew up in their family home in Fern Tree and attended Ferntree State School. It must have given Victor a good education as the letters he sent home later are thoughtful and well Portrait of Victor, his mother Louisa written. and her parents, Sarah and Charles Gadd John and Louisa Gray in 1909 with children Victor, Gladys, Charles, George, Hannah, Henry, Phyllis, Arthur and Ronald (one son Freddie died in 1903 and the baby in this photo (Ronald) died soon after the picture was taken. Clyde, Stanley, Harold, Leslie and Athol were born later. Athol was born the year Victor enlisted with the AIF. Working Life After finishing school, Victor worked on his family’s fruit farm and on the roads during the off-season. Victor’s father and Charlie also worked as labourers on the road to bring in extra income for the family.

Small* Althoughmore is becoming known about the prisonsofmedievalEurope, the details ofthe use andorganization ofFrench municipalprisons have not been the subjectofmuch study. A series of accounts from the early fourteenth century in the Archives départementales du Pas-de-Calais at Arras permits the examination ofsome aspects of the working ofthe prison attached to the castle atArras, which was used by the municipal government primarily for custodial rather than punitive purposes to detain debtors and people awaiting trial or execution. The fIScal arrangementsfor the prison, including the charges onprisoners and the provision madefor indigentprisoners, can be used to obtain other information on such matters as normal terms ofimprisonment, the composition of the prison population, prison conditions, and thefate ofprisoners. Malgré l'accroissement des recherches sur les prisons de l'Europe médiévale, on n'a guère étudié l'utilisation et l'organisation des geôles municipales françaises. Une série de rapports tirés des Archives départementales du Pas-de-Calais, à Arras, nous permettent toutefois de comprendre certains aspects du fonctionnement de la prison attenante au château d'Arras, qui servaità la détention temporaire plutôt qu'à l'expiation des peines, où les autorités municipales incarcéraient les débiteurs insolvables et les gens qui attendaient d'être jugés ou exécutés. (continued) 1 Perhaps the reason for which John William Baggs enlisted in Montreal rather than back home in Newfoundland was that at the time he was a student at McGill University in that city. Few if any details appear in the documents a propos either his movements from the Dominion of Newfoundland to that of Canada or of his activities as a student…except that he was attached to the Student Canadian Officer Training Corps at McGill. It was on January 13 of 1916 that he is recorded as having presented himself not only for enlistment but also for medical examination and attestation*. These formalities were also documented as having been brought to a conclusion on that same day by the commanding officer of the 9th Canadian Field Ambulance – to which Private Baggs had also been attached on that day – when he, Lieutenant Colonel C.A. Peters, declared, on paper, that…having been finally approved and inspected by me this day…I certify that I am satisfied with the correctness of this Attestation. *Several sources show other dates for all of these undertakings which differ by a day or so, but the above record appears to be the most likely. It was to be less than seven weeks later that Private Baggs began the journey for overseas service.

Claremen also fought at the Somme with the Australian Infantry, The New Zealand Infantry, The South African Infantry, The Grenadier Guards, The King’s (Liverpool Regiment), The Machine Gun Corps, The Royal Artillery, The Royal Army Medical Corps, The Royal Engineers, The Lancashire Fusiliers, The Bedfordshire Regiment, The London Regiment, The Manchester Regiment, The Cameronians, The Norfolk Regiment, The Gloucestershire Regiment, The Westminister Rifles Officer Training Corps, The South Lancashire Regiment, The Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment). At least 77 Claremen were killed in action or died from wounds at the Somme in 1916. Hundred’s of Claremen fought in the Battle.

(continued) 1 His occupation prior to military service recorded as that of a driver (of what seems not to be documented), James Bray Anthony – with his parents and seven siblings - had immigrated from the Dominion of Newfoundland to Canada in or about the year 1898, his father finding work in Montreal with the Great Trunk Railway as a driller. It was also in Montreal that, some twenty years later, he presented himself for medical examination at the Number 4 Mobilization Centre, enlisted and attested all on the same September 18, 1917. On that day again he was taken on strength by the 2nd Reinforcing Company of the 5th Regiment, Royal Highlanders of Canada. It was a mixed bag of military personnel that embarked onto His Majesty’s Transport Sicilian in the harbour at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on or just prior to October 22, 1917: the Canadian Mounted Rifles Depot and the 12th Draft of a Canadian Army Medical Corps unit were both to take passage to the United Kingdom with the single non-commissioned officer and sixty- four other ranks of Private Anthony’s detachment of the 5th Royal Highlanders of Canada. Sailing on that same October 22, it was to be ten days before Sicilian docked in the English west-coast port-city of Liverpool.
