This is the sixth (6th) change in partisan control for the House in the last ten (10) election cycles dating back to 1992. In 2011, the House will have 61 freshmen members out of 110. This is a turn-over rate of 55%. The Majority Republican caucus will have 40 freshmen out of 67 total members. In other words, almost 60% of the new Republican Majority caucus will be freshmen. The Minority Democratic caucus will have 21 freshmen out of 43 total members which is nearly 50%. Republicans challengers defeated nine (9) Democrat incumbents. The defeated incumbents are: Terry Brown of the Thumb; Kate Ebli from the Monroe area; Marty Griffin of Jackson; Jennifer Haase in Macomb County; Deb Kennedy from Wayne County; Mike Huckleberry of Greenville; Judy Nerat of the U.P.; Sarah Roberts in Macomb County; and Dan Scripps in Northwestern Lower Michigan. Returning Republican member Jase Bolger should be named Speaker-elect of the House at the Republican leadership elections on November 9. Top leadership candidates for the Democrats are currently Rep. Rick Hammel and Rep. Woodrow Stanley, both of Genesee County, and potentially Tim Melton of Auburn Hills. Michigan State Senate Unofficial 2010 Election Results 26 Republicans, 12 Democrats Freshmen: 29 Returning Incumbents: 9 Current House Members: 14 Former House Members: 14 No prior legislative service: 1 Republican Caucus (26) Democratic Caucus (12) 7th: Patrick Colbeck (Patterson) - Canton 1st: Coleman Young (Clarke) - Detroit 11th: Jack Brandenburg (Sanborn) – Harrison Twp. 2nd: Bert Johnson (Scott) - Detroit 10th: Tory Rocca (Switalski) – Sterling Heights 3rd: Morris Hood III (Clark-Coleman) - Detroit 12th: Jim Marleau (Bishop) – Lake Orion 4th: Virgil Smith (Thomas) - Detroit 13th: John Pappageorge - Troy 5th: Tupac Hunter - Detroit 15th: Mike Kowall (Cassis) – White Lake 6th: Glenn Anderson - Westland 16th: Bruce Caswell (Brown) - Hillsdale 8th: Hoon-Yung Hopgood (Basham) -Taylor 17th: Randy Richardville -Monroe 9th: Steve Bieda (Olshove) - Warren 19th: Mike Nofs – Battle Creek 14th: Vince Gregory (Jacobs) - Southfield 20th: Tonya Schuitmaker (George) - Lawton 18th: Rebekah Warren (Brater) - Ann Arbor 21st: John Proos (Jelinek) – St. Joseph 23rd: Gretchen Whitmer * - East Lansing 22nd: Joe Hune (Garcia) – Hamburg Twp. 27th: John Gleason - Flushing 24th: Rick Jones (Birkholz) – Grand Ledge 25th: Phil Pavlov (Gilbert) – St. Clair 26th: David Robertson (Cherry) – Grand Blanc 28th: Mark Jansen – Gaines Twp. 29th: David Hildenbrand (Hardiman) - Lowell 30th: Arlan Meekhof (Kuipers) – West Olive 31st: Mike Green (Barcia) – Bay City 32nd: Roger Kahn –Saginaw Twp. 33rd: Judy Emmons (Cropsey) - Sheridan 34th: Goeff Hansen (Van Woerkom) - Hart 35th: Darwin Booher (McManus) - Evart 36th: John Moolenaar (Stamas) - Midland 37th: Howard Walker (Allen) –Traverse City 38th: Tom Casperson (Prusi) - Escanaba Key: Last name of outgoing incumbent appears in parentheses. * = Caucus Leader Kelley Cawthorne Analysis: As we predicted, the Senate Republicans retained control and increased their margin by four (4) seats. Republicans also swept all eight (8) seats we identified as competitive to gain a 2/3 Super- Majority. This means Republicans can give a bill immediate effect and pass proposed constitutional amendments without any Democratic votes. Due to Term Limits, the Michigan Senate will have 29 first term members out of 38 in 2011, a turn-over rate of 76%. Of the 38 members: nine (9) are returning incumbents, fourteen (14) are current House members, fourteen (14) are former House members, and one (1) has no prior legislative service. Top candidates for Senate Majority Leader are second-termer Randy Richardville of Monroe County and first-termer John Proos of St. Joseph. Republican leadership elections are set for November 9, 2010. Sen. Gretchen Whitmer of East Lansing will be the Senate Minority Leader in 2011. She is the first woman in state history to lead a Senate caucus. .
