THE TOKUGAWA ART MUSEUM HŌSA LIBRARY CITY of April 18 (Sun.) - May 30 (Sun.), 2021 Special Exhibition Toshio Tabuchi: “Depicting Time Eternal” Exhibition Rooms 7-9 at The Tokugawa Art Museum The Japanese painter TABUCHI Toshio continues to create works that balance decorativeness and spirituality, two core aesthetic qualities of Japanese-style painting known as Nihonga. Looking back on Tabuchi's oeuvre, this exhibition presents a selection of masterworks that have been recommended by the artist himself, including several new works.

Thematic Exhibition The Exquisite World of Birds and Flowers Exhibition Rooms at Hōsa Library Birds and flowers have enchanted people since ancient times. This exhibition presents paintings and decorative art objects displaying images of birds and flowers both as indicators of seasonality and as a sophisticated design patterns.

The Tokugawa Art Museum (exhibited from March 3 to March 28, 2021) June 5 (Sat.) - July 11 (Sun.), 2021 Special Exhibition The Art of the Japanese Sword: Tracing Connections in Kyoto/Nara and Kyushu Exhibition Rooms 7-9 at The Tokugawa Art Museum This exhibition presents famous swords by craftsmen of the Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture) and Yamato (Nara Prefecture) regions, which are notable sword production areas, alongside swords by craftsmen from Kyushu who followed in the lineage of the Yamato swordsmiths.

Thematic Exhibition “Red Gold”/“Black Gold”: The Beauty and Utility of Copper and Iron Exhibition Rooms at Hōsa Library Focusing on metallic materials, such as copper (akagane, or “red gold”) and iron (kurogane, or “black gold”), this exhibition presents a number of works that amply demonstrate the tastes of the warrior class, while also examining alloy and metal-processing technologies. We hope you will enjoy the multifaceted brilliance of these metals in their combination of practicality and decorative beauty through their use in a range of items, from sword fittings to tea utensils.

Provide a superlative example of a daimyo wedding trousseau. Hatsune motif derived from , maki-e lacquer. Edo period, 1639. Owned by Chiyohime, wife of the 2nd Owari Tokugawa Mitsutomo. July 17 (Sat.) - September 12 (Sun.), 2021 Summer Special Exhibition From Ieyasu to Yoshinao: The Transition to a Powerful Pre-Modern State Exhibition Rooms at Hōsa Library and Exhibition Rooms 7-9 at The Tokugawa Art Museum Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), the final national unifier, and his son Yoshinao (1600-1650), who was assigned to govern the during the time of peace, lived contrasting lives. Focusing on the ruling policies that were passed down from Ieyasu to Yoshinao, this exhibition traces the path of their lives, as well as Yoshinao's feelings toward Ieyasu through their personal effects and historical materials. The Tokugawa Art Museum September 18 (Sat.) - November 7 (Sun.), 2021 Autumn Special Exhibition Lives and Treasures of the Owari Tokugawa Princesses Exhibition Rooms at Hōsa Library and Exhibition Rooms 7-9 at The Tokugawa Art Museum Marrying into the , the most senior of the three main Tokugawa branch families, from the shogunal family and other leading households, the ladies of the domain supported the successive lords of Owari behind the scenes. This exhibition presents objects connected to the legal wives, concubines, and daughters of the Owari lords and illuminates the nature of their lives. Special Exhibits National Treasure, The Tale of Genji Illustrated Handscrolls: Special Unveiling of All Fifteen Newly Restored Volumes Exhibition Rooms 7 at The Tokugawa Art Museum Restoration of the full fifteen-scroll set of the Tokugawa Art Museum's National Treasure “The Tale of Genji Illustrated Handscrolls” and its remounting to the original handscroll format were completed in 2020. In commemoration of this accomplishment, the complete set will be unveiled to the public in this special two-part rotating exhibit.

Thematic Exhibition Kara-e: Classic Chinese Paintings of the Owari Exhibition Rooms at Hōsa Library This exhibition will present to the public for the first time ever the entire group of traditional Chinese paintings, including works from the Higashiyama Gomotsu shogunal collection, that have been passed down in the Owari Tokugawa family, bringing us closer to a complete understanding of the reception of Chinese paintings by this leading daimyo family. January 4 (Tue.) - January 30 (Sun.), 2022 Thematic Exhibition An Ukiyo-e Journey: Images of Travel from Edo Exhibition Rooms at Hōsa Library This exhibition presents, among others, landscape woodblock prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige, the two great masters of Ukiyo-e of the late Edo period. It also introduces the landscape prints that were included among the burial goods of the tomb of Tokugawa Yoshitsugu, the 13th Lord of Owari, and explores what these various Ukiyo-e artists hoped to convey through their landscape images. The Tokugawa Art Museum February 5 (Sat.) - April 3 (Sun.), 2022 Special Exhibition 35th Annual Hina Doll Festival of the Owari Tokugawa Family Exhibition Rooms 7-9 at The Tokugawa Art Museum This exhibition presents the world of the gorgeous and elegant doll displays that are unique to daimyo households, with a particular focus on the dolls and accompanying accoutrements that have been handed down from generation to generation in the Owari Tokugawa family.

Thematic Exhibition Annual Festivals and Celebrations, Past and Present Exhibition Rooms at Hōsa Library Some annual Japanese customs celebrated in the past are still alive today, while others have been lost. This exhibition traces the transformation of various annual events with a particular focus on those appearing in printed books and paintings from the Edo period.

Special Exhibits at the Masterpieces Collection Room 2 February 19 (Sat.) - March 1 (Tue.), 2022 Tea Scoop, named Namida (“Tears”) It is said that Sen-no-Rikyū (1522-1591), in his last days, carved this bamboo tea scoop and used it in his last tea gathering. March 28, the day of Rikyū's death, is remembered as a memorial day called "Rikyū-ki." The scoop was later owned by Furuta Oribe who made the outer case for the scoop, then by Tokugawa Ieyasu and by the 1st Owari Lord Tokugawa Yoshinao.
