INTERNATIONAL SHOWCASE SELECTION – UK ARTISTS

GHAZALAW Welsh singer-songwriter Gwyneth Glyn met Mumbai ghazal singer Tauseef Akhtar through their mutual friend Donal Whelan of Hafod Mastering. Supported by Wales Arts International, Tauseef and Gwyneth spent a week in ‘The Round House’, St.Hilary exchanging poetry and compositions. By the end of the week they had composed a collection of songs which weaved Welsh folk with Urdu ghazal. Gwyneth invited harpist Georgia Ruth to Mumbai where they arranged the songs with Tauseef, Sanjoy Das, Manas Kumar and Ashish Jha. Following performances at the Desert Festival, Delhi and Indiearth Exchange, Chennai, Ghazalaw returned to the Round House in January 2013 to record the songs. Ghazalaw are delighted to be returning to the Donal Gordon Theatre on Friday evening to showcase at 00:30, before hitting the road on the Horizons Tour. Ghazalaw is sponsored by Air India. EMILY PORTMAN TRIO An enchantress, using her cheerfully innocent sounding voice to lure you into a disconcerting world of dark imaginings, cruel deeds and surreal fairy-tales drawn from the subterranean netherworld of folklore that still permeates from the cracks in the concrete mundanity of the modern urban landscape. Emily Portman sings, plays concertina, ukulele and banjo and writes songs that interpret and mould British folk traditions into a platform for her own story-telling, inspired by a wide range of literary influences from the myth of Leda and the Swan to the novels of Angela Carter. Her second

8 album, Hatchling, won her a BBC Folk Award and reams of effusive reviews, and in the Emily Portman Trio, alongside Lucy Farrell and on viola, harp and vocals, she's been busy enchanting audiences around the UK. She will perform a Daycase between 1.00 – 2.00pm on Thursday 24 October at Motorpoint Arena. http://www.emilyportman.co.uk

LAU Newcomers to Lau-Land start here: 2004, three guys sit in an kitchen playing a few tunes on fiddle, guitar and accordion. Fast-forward to 2013 to see them hailed as the most musically adventurous trio in British folk, picking up the BBC Folk Award for Best Band for an unprecedented fourth time, headlining major festivals, touring the world and generally pushing the boundaries of the folk-trio concept with bold sonic experiments as well as taking on some intriguing collaborations with the likes of ambient-electro pioneer Adem, singer-songwriter , Cream hero Jack Bruce and composer Brian Irvine and the Northern Sinfonia. Lau are Orcadian singer-songwriter Kris Drever, master Scottish fiddler Aidan O'Rourke and English accordion and electronics maverick Martin Green, all individually renowned musicians who together create the synergy that's fuelled their amazing success. http://www.lau-music.co.uk

HORISON STAGE SHOWCASES

WALES SELECTION:

GEORGIA RUTH (Wales) Raised in Aberystwyth, Georgia Ruth is a singer, songwriter and harpist whose haunting voice has drawn favourable comparisons with the melancholy folk sirens of the late-60s. Her harp playing was inspired more by the finger-picking guitar style than by the classical method she was taught as a child. In May 2013, she released her debut album – Week of Pines - on Gwymon Records. Lead single ‘Week of Pines’ garnered sterling support across the airwaves. Steve Lamacq named her as his “Favourite New Band” on BBC 6 Music, after she won his Rebel Playlist and made a guest appearance. Jo Whiley picked the single as her “New Favourite Thing” in the same week on BBC Radio 2. Writing in the Independent, Andy Gill called her album “a dazzling debut, rich with sweet

9 pain and joy”. Writing in The Guardian, Robin Denselow described Georgia as "one of the British folk discoveries of the year." [email protected] [email protected]

CATRIN FINCH AND SECKOU KEITA (Wales / Senegal) Wales and Senegal both share a centuries old bardic-griot tradition of intricate oral history expressed through music, song and verse. The harp and the kora, instruments from the same family, occupy a vital place in these rich cultures. Welsh classical harpist Catrin Finch and Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita have combined forces to explore these traditions and in the process have created something refreshingly new. Catrin Finch has made concert appearances around the globe with some of the world's top orchestras, working alongside artists such as , Sir James Galway and Julian Lloyd-Webber. Seckou Keita is a member of the royal Keita dynasty from Mali (through his father), and a griot (through his mother's family, the Cissokhos). Both are inspired improvisers, moving through each others' musical worlds with a harmonious, empathetic communication. Spellbinding. http://www.astarmusic.co.uk

9BACH (Wales) 9Bach's eponymous debut album of 2009 heralded a bold new direction for Welsh folk songs, with the exquisite, silken tones of Lisa Jen's voice imparting a new emotional life to some venerable traditional ballads, against a subtly unfolding sonic landscape, both brazenly edgy and smoothly opulent, starting from tinkling glockenspiel or droning harmonium and layered over with slabs of electric guitar, harp filigrees and the throb of drums and bass. In 2011, after a successful festival season, band-leaders Lisa Jen and Martin Hoyland travelled to Australia to work on a project with the Indigenous Australian performance group, The Black Arm Band Company, exploring themes of identity, culture and the preservation of language, which culminated in a joint performance at the 2012 Cultural Olympiad in London. 9Bach's second album has just been released. http://www.9bach.com

Lisa Matthews of Cerdd Cymru: Music Wales said: “We’re delighted that 9Bach, Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita and Georgia Ruth Williams have been selected by the partners and industry panel to perform at Horizons at WOMEX

“This year Georgia Ruth has had critical acclaim and national radio play with her debut album. Similarly Catrin Finch’s recent collaboration with kora player Seckou has literally been front page news in the music press! After a taster in 2010, WOMEX want more of 9Bach and it’s an opportunity to perform the new works they have recently recorded. This opportunity is perfectly timed for all three acts and we know they will do Wales proud.”

10 ENGLAND SELECTION:

FAMILY ATLANTICA (Venesuala / UK) Family Atlantica re-unite rhythms and motifs that have ebbed and flowed back and forth across the Atlantic ocean over the centuries, weaving together disparate styles with a common African ancestry. They draw from Cuban rumba, Nigerian afrobeat, Venezuelan tambor and tonada, Ghanaian high-life, Ethiopian blues and North African gnawa and infuse them with psychedelia and spiritual jazz. The band's nucleus consists of three people from three different continents: London-born band leader, producer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and instrument builder, Jack Yglesias; traditional Venezuelan musician, poet and singer Luzmira Zerpa and Nigerian/Ghanaian percussionist, Kwame 'Natural Power' Crentsil. Their debut album released in February this year features collaborations with Ethiopian legend Mulatu Astatke, Senegalese gnawa master Nuru Kane, and Havana's finest rumba collective Yoruba Andabo. Family Atlantica is a multi-national rhythm machine, constructed in London. [email protected]

LOKKHI TERRA Songlines magazine described them as "probably the world's best afrobeat-Cuban- Bangladeshi group". Perhaps they're even the only one. Certainly, there's not many bands that can so skilfully weave together such diverse influences into a serious global mix while carrying a sackful of great tunes too. Led by British-Asian, classically trained, jazz inspired pianist Kishon Khan, Lokkhi Terra represents the musical cutting-edge of multi-cultural 21st-century London, with a stellar multi-national cast of multi-experienced musicians fronted by three Bengali singers and a Cuban vocalist. Lokkhi Terra constantly surprise and delight with their artful blending of styles where a traditional Bangladeshi folk song is carried along with some Congolese inflected acid-jazz-funk, Havana rumba lands in Addis Ababa and township jazz grooves coolly behind a classic Bengali evergreen. Or something like that, and more. Not to be missed. www.facebook.com/lokkhiterra

Ben Lane, Senior Relationship Manager Music, Arts Council England said: “Family Atlantica and Lokkhi Terra are stand-out artists on today’s vibrant world music circuit. Their global mix of influences celebrate the diversity of culture in England and they add a unique dynamic to the fantastic talent showcasing on the Horizons stage.”

SCOTLAND SELECTION:

FIONA HUNTER (Scotland, UK) Fiona Hunter is one of Scotland's foremost traditional singers and is fast garnering a reputation as a highly gifted song interpreter. Fiona has been singing as part of renonwed folk song group Malinky for the

11 best part of a decade. Her time with the group has seen them win many accolades including the prestigious Folk Band of the year award at the 2010 MG Alba . Fiona has also been twice nominated in the Scots Singer of the Year category at the awards. 2013 will see the release of Fiona's highly anticipated debut solo album, featuring songs from her native Glasgow and beyond. The recording will also feature a cast of some of the finest instrumentalists currently gracing the traditional music scene, including Mike Vass, Matheu Watson, Euan Burton, Gillian Frame and some special guest vocalists. www.fionahunter.co.uk

ROSS AINSLIE AND JARLATH HENDERSON (Scotland / Ireland) A Scottish-Irish super-duo formed by two of the brightest young stars of Celtic music. Ross Ainslie, nominee for Musician of the Year Award at the BBC Folk Awards and highly sought after on the Scottish contemporary folk scene for his skill on Scottish pipes, whistles and cittern, has played with the likes of Flook and Salsa Celtica. Jarlath Henderson is a three-time All-Ireland Champion Uilleann Piper and BBC Young Folk Musician of the Year Award winner, who has also found the time to become a doctor. They first started playing together in 2003, taking their time to hone their boundary-pushing mix of traditional tunes and original compositions which finally turned the heads of the wider world with the 2009 release of their critically acclaimed debut album, Partners in Crime. www.facebook.com/RossAinslieAndJarlathHenderson

Caroline Parkinson, Director of Creative Development at Creative Scotland said: “We are delighted to be part of this exciting new partnership and to present some of the very best music emerging from Scotland, alongside the UK and Ireland artists, on the Horizons stage at WOMEX 13.

“WOMEX is one of the most important international professional markets of world music, attracting international delegates, leading music managers, festival and venue programmers and recording company executives from across the globe.

“The Horizons home stage will provide an opportunity for Scotland’s talented artists Fiona Hunter, Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson to develop contacts, secure deals and make connections that ensures Scotland’s world class music continues to thrive.”

IRELAND & NORTHERN IRELAND SELECTION:

KAN (UK) Connoisseurs of the UK folk scene will need no introduction to the names of Brian Finnegan and Aidan O'Rourke. Flute and tin-whistle maestro Finnegan hails from Armagh in Northern Ireland and played with renowned Anglo-Irish combo, Flook. Master fiddler Aidan O'Rourke from Scotland's Isle of Sell is also one third of the trail-blazing folk trio, Lau. In Kan they join forces with Ian Stephenson on acoustic guitar and Jim

12 Goodwin on drums. Stephenson plays with 422 and Baltic Crossing and Goodwin is percussionist with the Halle and Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestras. They form a tight, lyrical and funky rhythm section, driving the inspired improvisations of Finnegan and O'Rourke. "Kan explore the relationship between the authority of traditional melody and its contemporary aspects of harmony, sonority and groove", says their PR. Sounds good to us. http://www.kan-music.co.uk

WE BANJO 3 (IRELAND)

Combining virtuosic vivacity on a multiplicity of instruments with a wide-ranging repertoire of Irish music skilfully suffused with old- time American and Bluegrass influences, We Banjo 3 are reinventing the banjo band sound. As the name would suggest, they are a quartet of two sets of brothers from Galway okay, only three of them play banjo all festooned with various awards and championship wins as proof of their credentials. Between them they hold not less than 15 All-Ireland titles and collaborations with an impressive list of artists from Ricky Scaggs to the Chieftains, and collectively they've been picking up Best Album and Best Band awards from the Irish media. They've just been touring the USA on their Bringing the Banjo Back Home tour and they're ready to show WOMEX what they do best. www.webanjo3.com

Christine Sisk, Director Culture Ireland said: "We are delighted that Ireland and Northern Ireland will be showcasing some of the best of our music on the Horizons stage at WOMEX. Kan and We Banjo 3, combining a winning mix of virtuosic musicianship and a stylish fusion of intricate melodies, are the hottest properties in Irish music at the moment. WOMEX, as a world-class music showcase, offers a unique opportunity to share some of the wealth of Irish music talent with international audiences, promoters and agents. This platform will undoubtedly open up further international career opportunities for these bands as well as highlighting the strength and vibrancy of world music in Ireland.”
