Marvelous Machines: Making Worker Easier Lesson 1,Lesson 3

Title: Lever Classes and Graphing Grade Level: 2, 3 Prep Time: Under 15min Written by: Paula Yolles Hilltown Cooperative Charter Public School, Haydenville, Lesson Time (1): 60 Minutes Massachusetts Lesson Time (2): None

Lesson Description: Students learn the different classes of levers and create a graph showing the the quantity of each type of lever found in the classroom.

Strands: • Measurement and Data • Mathematical Practices Standards: • Model with mathematics • Represent and interpret data

Objective: Students will: • Learn the three types of lever classes. • Create a graphic representation of findings based of the quantity of each type of lever class.

Materials: • Easel, chalkboard, or Smartboard • Paper for students to make graphs • Recording sheet • Make small paper labels with the words: fulcrum, effort, resistance

Lesson Plan: 1. Review or teach the following vocabulary: fulcrum, lever, effort, and resistance. 2. Show 3-6 common simple machines that use levers. Make sure you have at least 2 of each class. 3. Suggestions: 1st class- shears, , crowbar, 2nd class- , paper cutter, wrench 3rd class- baseball bat, , toilet handle, hammer.

Duplication Permitted 1 Content Extension: Marvelous Machines: Making Worker Easier, Lesson 1,Lesson 3 4. Show the simple machines and have the kids help you label each lever with fulcrum, resistance, and effort. You can use pieces of small paper with the words and tape them onto each lever. 5. Show the students the recording sheet and how to use it.Gather the class and have them share their finding from # 13 on the recording sheet. Record the findings on the easel. 6. Students work in small groups to create a graph showing the classes finding of the quantity of each type of lever found in the classroom.

Reflections: Prior lesson, What is a lever and how does it work, supports this lesson. Knowledge of how- to make graphs is needed to do this lesson.

Assessment: Work on recording sheet. Group discussions. Final graph.
