Esquesing the 25 th May 1836 Sir, I have been requested by Benajah Williams of the Township of Esquesing to examine Lot No. twenty in the tenth Concession of the aforesaid township of Esquesing, a Clergy Reserve, and report to you the quality of the said Lot – (that is) the kind of soil, MG9 - Genealogy 17

timber, make and situation of said premises – Agreeable to the request of the said B. Williams I have this day examined the aforesaid Lot which I find to be of fallows (that is today) soil in general very lite and sandy, timber, a great vast [track], pine, very ruff in general. There also some cedar [ ? ] etc and hardwood of various kinds. The River Credit runs through the west half of said Lot. The country on the northern side of said River is very high and difficult to surmount, finally the Lot is much broken with hills and revines, so that it cannot be considered by any means a good farm Lot – Neither do I know of any water privilege on the said Lot. The said Benajah Williams has made an improvement on the said Lot about three years since of [ ?] twelve to fourteen acres, the same is in a good state of cultivation and well fenced. I am Sir your most humble and obt. Servant, Charles Kennedy Dept. Surveyor To James Henderson, Esquire Agent, Clergy Reserve Corporation

Acton, Jan’y 5 th 1876

My Dear Sister I suppose if I expect to here from you again I will have to write. We are all well. Fannie is asleep. Susie is making me a pair of pants & I am smoking. I have not got to work since New Years. Yet it is not because there is no work, but owing to some difficulty in getting lumber. If all is well we will begin in the morning & I expect we will be buisy untill about the first of May. We went down to the Glen to spend new years day, eat a big Turkey, Plum Pudding, mince Pies, Plumb cake, smoked cigars and numerous things. I do not think I will be able to come to Toronto in some time owing to a lightness in the Pocket which I fear will last some time. I will want you to get me some things after a while if you will. I spend my evening in studying architectural drawing. I am getting along nicely. I have houses built on paper from a small cottage (a sample of which I send you) up to large two story brick with verandah French windows etc., School Houses, Stores. And I am going to build a church next. I am persurving them all so when you come to see me you can see them too. I have no more Paper. Write soon. Yours ever “J. I. Williams” Architect & Builder
