Answer: According to the Hadith, Allah’s messenger Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) sent Mu’adh to Yemen and told him to invite people to testify that there is no God but Allah and that Mohammed is the messenger of Allah. If they accept inform them that Allah has prescribed them five prayers in a day and night. If they accept this, inform them that Allah has made obligatory for them to pay Zakah from their property.

2. Is Sadaqah obligatory?

Answer: Sadaqah is not obligatory like Zakah. Sadaqah is optional and it has no limits.

3. What is the difference between Sadaqah and Zakah?

Answer: Every act of kindness is a Sadaqah. Zakah is usually one fortieth of a man’s riches while Sadaqah has no limit.

4. What is Zakah? What does Zakah purify?

Answer: There is no equivalent English term for Zakah. It can be rendered as purifying dues or ‘-giving’. Primarily the word Zakah means purity and cleanliness. Zakah purifies our wealth.

5. Is it binding on ‘every Muslim’ to give Zakah?

Answer: Zakah is not obligatory on the poor.

6. What is the fate, according to the Qur’an and Hadith, of those who do not give Zakah?

Answer: Those who do not give Zakah fall outside the pale of .

Answer: Sawm is the Arabic word for fasting. Fasting means abstaining from eating, drinking and conjugal relations.

12. On whom is the fasting obligatory?

Answer: It is obligatory on the sick, the very old and very young and women who are pregnant or have infant children to feed.

13. Mention some of the virtues of fasting.

Answer: Some of the virtues of fasting are-
