2012 Festival Poster Artist: Billy McGuire

Billy McGuire has been an artist since he was born and has expressed it in many ways throughout his life. He was accepted at Art Institute of Fort Lau- derdale but declined the offer and went straight into the industry. He started out hand painting signs and expanded into graphics and digital art. Growing along with the industry, he has been suc- cessful in running his own Sign and Graphics com- pany and has over 22 years of experience. It took several years to find his place and once he did he knew it was home. From Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale to Chicago Billy roamed, but Cocoa Beach is where his heart is and his family lives. Billy is honored to be chosen for the 49th Annual Space Coast Art Festival Poster and T-Shirt contest. He is very grateful for all of your appreciation in making the city’s pearl, the Space Coast Art Festival, all that it is. If you would like to see more of what Billy does, his sign and graphics shop A1A Signwave is located downtown Cocoa Beach at 106 North Orlando Ave, Cocoa Beach Fl, 32931 or go online www.a1asignwave.com.

In Memoriam: Robert Wayne Coombs 1949 - 2012

The City of Cocoa Beach and the entire art community suffered a tremendous loss with the unexpected passing of Robert Wayne Coombs on September 4, 2012. Wayne created unique and evocative art and tiki carvings in Cocoa Beach for 39 years, and with his beloved wife, Beki, they established Mai Tiki Gallery in downtown Cocoa Beach, where Wayne was always a jovial presence in the Art Festival. Our admiration and fond memories of Wayne and his welcoming smile and personality will last forever. 49th Annual Space Coast Art Festival 3 Downtown Cocoa Beach, FL 2012 Student T-Shirt Competition

49th Annual Space Coast Art Festival 14 Downtown Cocoa Beach, FL President’s Award

A new President’s Award in honor of Jay Dow has been established this year. Jay was involved with Space Coast Art Festival for more than 30 years prior to her sudden death on Novem- ber 30, 2011. Her long service to SCAF was most frequently as Co-Registrar where she had a close working relationship with show artists. The art- ists loved her as did all who worked with her. Jay’s disposition and caring nature were a joy to all who were in her presence. Jay moved to Cocoa Beach from Pontiac, Michigan, in 1963 and married Dave Dow in 1984. In addition to About the Show her husband, she is survived by three children, five grandchildren and a brother. The Space Coast Art Festival (SCAF) is a not- for-profit 501(c)3 organization governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. In 1963, a Board of Directors small group of artists and local community lead- ers formed the first ‘Cocoa Beach Sidewalk Art Show’. Sponsored by the City of Cocoa Beach and supported by the Cocoa Beach Woman’s Club, the Art Show thrived for several years.

Incorporated in 1972, Space Coast Art Festival, Inc. was born and presented its first juried show. Not-for-profit status was granted in 1996 and in 1998 a year-round headquarters was established and is currently located at 36 North Brevard Av- enue in Downtown Cocoa Beach. In 2000, a gal- lery was added to provide a venue for support of local artists and out reach programs for children.
