Kinect in Mac: Quartz Composer and Processing A brief tutorial by NIRTeam @ TEI Crete Contents ● Using Quartz Composer with Kinect ● Using Processing programming language with kinect ● 3D scanning using Kinect Quartz Composer (QC) ● Node-based visual programming language used mainly for processing and rendering graphics. ● Included in the Xcode developer tools package by Apple ● Quartz Composer uses OpenGL (including GLSL), OpenCL, Core Image, Core Video, JavaScript, and other technologies to build an API and a developer tool Data types inside QC Boolean - a boolean value, 0 or 1 Index - a positive integer between 0 and 2147483647 Number - a double precision floating point number String - a unicode string Color - an RGBA or CMYK quartet, or a Grayscale value Image - a 2D image of arbitrary (possibly infinite) dimensions Structure - a named or ordered collection of objects, including nested structures Virtual - any of the above Mesh - a collection of vertices, and per-vertex normals, texture coordinates, and colors in 3-space. Always safe to access from the thread in which it (or its UIManagedDocument) was created. Feel free to take this approach for your homework (it’s the most straightforward). Another Approach [context performBlock:^{ // o r performBlockAndWait: // do stuff with context }]; This will make sure that the code in the block happens on the context’s safe thread. Note that this might well be the main thread, so you’re not necessarily getting “multithreaded.” Advanced Approach Some contexts (including Core Data ones) have a parentContext (a @property on NSMOC). The parentContext will almost always have its own thread, so you can performBlock: on it. But it is a different context, so you’ll have to save and then refetch to see the changes. Programming Java for OS X hat’s so different about Java on a Mac? Pure Java applica- tions run on any operating system that supports Java. W Popular Java tools run on OS X. From the developer’s point of view, Java is Java, no matter where it runs. Users do not agree. To an OS X user, pure Java applications that ignore the feel and features of OS X are less desirable, meaning the customers will take their money elsewhere. Fewer sales translates into unhappy managers and all the awkwardness that follows. In this book, I show how to build GUIs that feel and behave like OS X users expect them to behave. I explain development tools and libraries found on the Mac. I explore bundling of Java applications for deployment on OS X. I also discuss interfacing Java with other languages commonly used on the Mac. This chapter is about the background and basics of Java develop- ment on OS X. 1 Chapter 1. Origins of Mac OS X "Most ideas come from previous ideas." Alan Curtis Kay The Mac OS X operating system represents a rather successful coming together of paradigms, ideologies, and technologies that have often resisted each other in the past. A good example is the cordial relationship that exists between the command-line and graphical interfaces in Mac OS X. The system is a result of the trials and tribulations of Apple and NeXT, as well as their user and developer communities. Mac OS X exemplifies how a capable system can result from the direct or indirect efforts of corporations, academic and research communities, the Open Source and Free Software movements, and, of course, individuals. Apple has been around since 1976, and many accounts of its history have been told. If the story of Apple as a company is fascinating, so is the technical history of Apple's operating systems. In this chapter,[1] we will trace the history of Mac OS X, discussing several technologies whose confluence eventually led to the modern-day Apple operating system. Game Audio via OpenAL Summary In the Graphics For Games module, you learnt how to use OpenGL to create complex graphical scenes, improving your programming skills along the way, and learning about data structures such as scene graphs. In this workshop, you'll see how to add sounds to your game worlds using the OpenAL sound library. New Concepts Sound in games, OpenAL, PCM audio, binary file formats, FourCC codes, WAV files, limited resource management Introduction Audio has played an important part in gaming almost as long as there have been games to play - even Pong back in 1972 had simple sound effects. We've moved a long way from then; the 80s brought dedicated audio hardware such as the Commodore 64's SID chip that could play 3 simultaneous syn- thesised sounds, and later the Amiga brought the ability to play audio samples to the home gaming market. In modern gaming hardware, we can expect to hear many simultaneous sounds and music tracks, often in surround sound. Game developers now employ dedicated sound engineers that will carefully adjust the sounds in each game release to create an immersive aural experience - making sure that each individual sound is uniquely identifiable and correctly equalised, and that every music track suits the situation they will be played in. At the heart of a game's audio experience is the code that plays back the game sounds, and cal- culates which speakers they should use - the sound system. Although we can't hope to compete with the complex sound systems of AAA games, we should still be able to make a robust, simple system for the addition of sound in our 3D games, and that's what this workshop will assist you in creating.
