Joint Meeting Reception - Nicollet Island Pavilion

Thursday, 7 July - 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. This year's Joint Meeting reception will be at the Nicollet Island Pavilion. Built in 1886 by Lintges and Connell & Company, Nicollet Island Pavilion began as a one-story frame building called the William Bros. Boiler Works. In 1893 a major fire consumed the Boiler Works and a new brick structure was constructed to replace the destroyed building. The building went through various stages of ownerships until 1976 when the Minneapolis Park Board acquired most of Nicollet Island. In 1983 Nicollet Island Park was developed and the Pavilion was used as a simple picnic shelter. Today, the Nicollet Island Pavilion is a gem in the Twin Cities community, rich with charm and history. The Joint Meeting reception is included in all full conference, first exhibitor representative, and accompanying persons registration fees. All others must purchase a reception ticket. Additional guest reception tickets are $50 each. NOTES

10 11 Symposia

Friday, 8 July 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. ASIH Drawing Lines in the Sand: Comparative Phylogeography of the Gulf-Atlantic Coastal Plain Room: Symphony Ballroom III Freshwater bound organisms are ideal models for phylogeographic research as population dynamics and genetic structure are expected to closely follow the boundaries between freshwater habitat networks (watershed divides). With the advent and continued refinement of high-throughput genotyping technology, the field of phylogeography is increasingly able to test explicit historical hypotheses. This transition of research focus from geographical pattern to spatiotemporal process is partly responsible for the recent trend toward investigation of upland , as their "island- like" habitats are more amenable to development and testing of biogeographic hypotheses. As a result, the majority of recent work has focused upon groups such as darters (Percidae), small salamanders (Plethodontidae), and other organisms that inhabit uplifted provinces. Phylogeographic structure of species inhabiting the Gulf- Altantic Coastal Plain remains underappreciated, having been overshadowed since the foundational work of the 1980's. However, recent efforts across numerous institutions show renewed interest in applying modern phylogeographic approaches to understanding this fauna. In addition, an immediate need exists for a renewed interest in phylogeographic structure of lowland species, as many ecosystems within the region are disproportionately affected by anthropogenic impacts (e.g. longleaf pine ecosystems, karst springfed streams, blackwater wetlands). A better understanding of historical gene flow, evolutionarily significant units, and cryptic speciation will contribute to an overall conservation strategy for species that have declined in concert with regional habitat loss. Organizers: Michael Sandel and Andres Lopez Co-organizers: Jim Williams

12 Symposia (continued)

Friday, 8 July 8:15 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. ASIH Ranaviruses: An emerging threat to ectothermic vertebrates Room: Minneapolis Ballroom F This symposium brings together scientists from around the world to learn and share information about a group of viral pathogens that are impacting amphibian, reptile, and fish populations. The symposium will be the first time that the scientific community investigating ranaviruses has gathered to discuss the state of research. Consequently, it will cultivate collaborations that forge new research directions and generate conservation strategies aimed at reducing or preventing the emergence of ranaviruses. There is still much to be learned about ranaviruses and this symposium represents an important step in increasing awareness and moving the field of ranaviral disease ecology forward. In total, there will be 23 presenters from 8 countries with expertise in herpetology, ichthyology, ecology, veterinary medicine, immunology, genetics, and molecular biology. Presentation is by invite only although all conference attendees are welcome to attend. Intellectual products from this symposium will be posted to the Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) website (www.parcplace.org) after the meeting. Organizer: Matthew Gray Co-organizers: Jesse Brunner, Debra Miller, Jason Hoberman, and Andrew Storfer

Friday, 8 July 8:45 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. ASIH Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Genetic Resource Banking: Tools for Conserving Declining Amphibians Room: Minneapolis Ballroom E As a response to the global amphibian extinction crisis, captive assurance colonies are rapidly being established by zoos, governmental organizations, and universities for many species. The huge support for these efforts was evident by the response of zoos worldwide to the 2008 Year of the sponsored by the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). Furthermore, at the last World Congress of Herpetology held in Manaus, Brazil, numerous recovery plans presented included an ex-situ/captive branch to help complement their overall conservation management plan. Unfortunately though, not all amphibian species breed readily in captivity and assisted reproductive technologies developed in mammalian systems do not always transfer readily to other taxonomic groups. Developing the techniques and protocols to improve captive breeding programs and to increase the numbers of offspring available for reintroduction is necessary if this tool is to reach its full potential. Linked to this is the fact that in many cases, by the time captive breeding programs are started for an endangered species, a great deal of genetic diversity has already been lost from a population. Genetic resource banking can help to preserve genetic diversity that can be reintroduced into a population, but like many other assisted reproductive techniques, researchers must overcome many of the challenges associated with adapting these techniques to amphibians to make them useful and accessible to herpetologists and conservation Organizer: Jennifer Germano Co-organizer: Andy Kouba

13 Symposia (continued)

Sunday, 10 July 8:15 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday, 11 July 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. ASIH Biology of turtles of the Upper Mississippi River Basin: A symposium in honor of the 80th birthday of John M. Legler and his 50 years of fieldwork with turtles in the USA, Mexico, Central America, and Australia Room: Symphony Ballroom III This two day symposium will feature long term studies on turtles, historic studies, and present day activities on the Mississippi River, as well as distinguished former students of Legler reminiscing on their days in the field with him, (i.e., Jim Bull, Ed Moll, Jim Christiansen, and Jim Berry, among others). We are planning a dinner celebration, as well as a post meeting day trip on a paddle wheel steamboat down the Mississippi River to Weaver bottoms, a site where Mike Pappas and Justin Congdon have been studying Blandings turtles for over 35 years.

If you are a turtle person this is the place to be this year. Organizer: Richard Vogt Co-Organizers: Michael Pappas and Justin Congdon

14 Workshops Graduate Student Workshops Friday, 8 July 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. SSAR Graduate Student Workshop Law and Order in Herpetology: Permits and Regulations for Importation and Exportation Room: Conrad A Presenter: Aaron Bauer Saturday, 9 July 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. AES Graduate Student Workshop Elasmobranch Conservation Research: Principles and Room: Minneapolis Ballroom G Elasmobranch conservation is a hot topic given the precipitous population declines reported for many species, yet there are several aspects of elasmobranch conservation research that generate debate. For example, the use of lethal sampling methods in scientific research is a volatile subject area in general – but can it ever be justified in a conservation context? Moreover, what exactly constitutes "conservation research"? We all like to think that our work will contribute in some way to the preservation of our study species, but where do we draw the line in terms of claiming tangible conservation-oriented outcomes? This workshop will cover issues such as those mentioned above, in addition to which we will discuss perceptions of the non-scientific obligations of elasmobranch conservation researchers with regard to participating in public outreach and education programs. Leading elasmobranch researchers and conservation advocates will provide their personal views and insights on the complexities of elasmobranch conservation research, and lead discussions on the more contentious aspects of this important field of research. Presenters: Sonja Fordham, Neil Hammerschlag, Tonya Wiley-Lesher, and Nick Dulvy Sunday, 10 July 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. ASIH Graduate Student Workshop How to Get a Job After Graduate School Room: Conrad A Apprehensive about what to do after you earn your degree? Join us at this year's ASIH Graduate Student Organization workshop to ask the experts how to take that next step in your scientific career. Whether you are looking for a post-doc assistantship, teaching job, museum position, or a job with a government agency, our panel of experts can answer your inquiries and help guide you to finding the job you want. Lunch will be provided. Presenters: Kevin Conway, Mo Donnelly, Al Savitsky, and Dustin Siegel

[Englisch] – 151 pages, 59 coloured fi gures, 33 distribution maps and 31 coloured plates. 24 x 21 cm. Paperback. ISBN 978-3-89937-132-1. Euro 38.00 All known and relevant data to enable an identifi cation of sharks of the genus Carcharhinus (BLAINVILLE 1816) are summarised and visualised in this book. An identifi cation key is given to differentiate the species. For each species an extended list of characters is given including coloured fi gures to show the lateral and ventral view, a detailed view of nostril and teeth, and in some cases of juveniles and special characters. Further, data on body size and appearance, colouration, tooth formula and shape, numbers of vertebrae, on other internal and external characters, the geographical distribution, preferred habitat and food spectrum are presented. In addition, biological and reproductional data are included, e. g. number of young per litter, size at birth, size at sexual maturity, as well as behaviour and migrational patterns. Most of the previous works about Carcharhinus listed and discussed a maximum of 30 species. In contrast, this fi eld guide describes 33 species. Further, a possible subdivision of the spinner shark, C. brevipinna, in an Atlantic and Pacifi c subspecies is briefl y discussed. An almost unknown species, C. acarenatus, formerly considered a of C. brachyurus, is introduced. A very rare species, C. leiodon, which was hitherto recorded only once by GARRICK (1985), is included and controversially discussed. Another species in dispute, Carcharhinus sp. A, mentioned by COMPAGNO et al. (2005) as new member of the genus, is comprised and discussed.
