Our purpose is to promote excellence and professionalism in public administration, through the provision of a platform to discuss and debate issues of relevance to the sector. Each year IPAA delivers a program of events to the public sector in Canberra. 2016 was a significant year with 50 events held. Over 7,500 attendees engaged with IPAA, a doubling over the previous year. Twelve Speeches 2016 showcases leaders who shared the stage during 2016, presented in chronological order: - Our year opened with The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, who delivered the Prime Minister’s Address to the APS at the Great Hall at Parliament House. - We hosted four Secretary Series events during the year, providing an opportunity for Secretaries to reflect on their portfolios and the challenges facing the public sector. - We were honoured to host valedictory addresses for Jane Halton AO PSM and Peter Varghese AO, as they reflected on their collective contribution of 71 years to the Australian Public Service. - Our annual conference ‘Thinking Big’ in November hosted a further three Secretaries and included a speech by Senator the Hon Arthur Sinodinos AO. - We closed the year with the Annual Address to the APS by Dr Martin Parkinson AC PSM. I am pleased to share the collective wisdom and thoughts of this distinguished group. We appreciate the support provided to IPAA and look forward to working with you in the years ahead. But the pair quickly fired back denying the claims. The Communications Minister even provided happy snaps to prove his whereabouts. “you need to improve yr surveillance! I am on the train to Tuggerah. PoliticsinPub Nth Wyong 2nite,” wrote. “No Ben. At 11.30 am I was not meeting w @JulieBishopMP - after a meeting at NBNCo I was waiting for a train at Nth Sydney,” he said. Mr Turnbull was heading to the Central Coast where he was meeting with local MP Karen McNamara. Just to prove his point he posted pictures from the train trip and one hugging a sign at Tuggerah station. “Arrived at our destination! @BenFordham looking forward to discussing broadband with Karen Mcnamara MP,” he said. It explores four aspects of its contemporary operations that are potentially problematic. These are: the accountability of ministerial staff, their conduct and behaviour, the adequacy of current arrangements for managing and controlling the staff, and their fit within a Westminster-style political system. When they installed Malcolm Turnbull party leader on September 14, 2015, all might have seen their political careers flourishing under what many people expected at the time to be a unifying, inspiring and competent prime minister. Instead, their stories in some ways personify the broader story of the Liberal government: starting with such promise, they have mostly either proved to be disappointments or failed to live up to their early promise. An opinion poll published Monday shows the Labor Party would easily win power based on current voting preferences. Fateful decision When they gathered on the evening of September 13, 2015, at Hendy's home in Queanbeyan, on the outskirts of Canberra, the atmosphere was thick with anticipation. The group, excluding Birmingham, who was flying up from Adelaide, took the fateful decision to remove a first-term leader who had ended six years of Labor power. The next day, Roy, Hendy, Brough, Ryan, Sinodinos and Fifield walked briskly alongside Turnbull to the meeting in Parliament House where they brought down Abbott, triggering open conflict between the two main wings of the party that persists today.

    After COVID-19: Creating the Best of Times from the Worst of Times Thursday 5th November, 2020 Government House, Sydney One hundred years after the 1918 Spanish flu claimed more than 50 million lives, pandemics remain on the list of major global risks. They are difficult to predict and invariably alter the course of history in ways we cannot foresee. The impact of this year’s COVID-19 pandemic spread quickly well beyond the people it infected, creating massive shifts across society and all sectors of the economy. The pandemic has exposed the social and economic vulnerabilities of today’s highly leveraged and interconnected world. It has also compounded prevailing existential risks for Australia, including the impact of climate change, a decade of household income stagnation, and an erosion of critically important political institutions that underpin national prosperity and our free, open, democratic society. The Royal Society of New South Wales will again join with the four Learned Academies of Australia to stage our annual Forum in Government House, Sydney, on 5th November under the gracious Vice Regal Patronage of Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of New South Wales.The Forum will examine how the COVID-19 pandemic has become a wake-up call for all of us to drive a wide-ranging, national program that will create a more resilient, self-sufficient and prosperous Australia. Transformations achieved already during the pandemic include escalations of telemedicine, automation, and digital commerce and communications, to name but a few. These show us what is possible when the wrecking-ball of a virus exacts its human and economic toll.

As Secretary of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Varghese plays a key role in bolstering Australia’s engagement with regional neighbours, and guides Australia to become a more prosperous and resilient nation in the Asian Century. Mr Varghese was Australia’s High Commissioner to India from 2009 to 2012. He dealt with sensitive and complex diplomatic issues surrounding India-Australia relations, including immigration policy, uranium and the wellbeing of Indian students studying in Australia. He has also served as Director-General of the Office of National Assessments, Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Deputy Secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Senior Adviser (International) to the Prime Minister. Other overseas posts have included Vienna in the early 1980s, Washington, DC, in the mid to late eighties and Tokyo in 1994. Mr Varghese graduated from The University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours and received a University Medal in history in 1977. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2010 for distinguished service to public administration, particularly for leading reform in the Australian intelligence community and as an adviser in the areas of foreign policy and international security.
