COURSE GENERAL INFORMATION

CATALOG DESCRIPTION

Computer-Aided Drafting Design II. Use of commercial graphics 2d and 3d . Systems development. Graphical and non-graphical data bases. Networking, interfacing, and data communications. Selection and evaluation of CADD systems. Use of MicroStation 95.

PREREQUISITE

MECT 3324, Computer-Aided Drafting Design I. Students must have a background in computer graphics programming and basic skills in AutoCAD.

COURSE INFORMATION

This is my first time teaching a complete course in CADD and the first time ever in teaching a TV course. I was assigned this course last week and there was still questions Friday as to whether I would indeed instruct it. I will furnish this information when I am able to determine it. There have no changes from the Class Schedule that I am aware of.

Note: Students who wish to do lab work when room 105 is not available should use the facilities in Room 116. Hours are: M-F 10-10 and Sat. & Sun. 10-6 (approximate — check door of Room 116 for exact hours).

Required: 1. Inside MicroStation 95, 4th ed; Onward Press, 1996, by R Sahai 2. Computer Graphics, 2nd Edition; Prentice-Hall, 1994; by Hearn and Baker (I am still reviewing this material to determine its suitability – it may change to ‘suggested’ by this time next week (I will keep you posted via email and the listserv). COURSE INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

The student will be able to:

1. describe the hardware and software components of a typical CADD system. 2. describe typical CADD graphical standards and demonstrate the use of the MicroStation 95 software on a PC computer. 3. write programs in the BASIC language to accomplish file, 2d and 3d manipulation, and transformations of geometric figures. 4. demonstrate advanced knowledge of the use of digital plotters and interactive input devices. 5. demonstrate ability to effectively communicate knowledge of computer graphics both orally and in writing.

COURSE GRADE

A final course letter grade of A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, or F will be assigned based on classroom and laboratory performance.

COURSE PROCEDURE

1. Reading assignments are expected to be completed outside class time and are to be accomplished before the Tuesday lecture class period of the week assigned. Exams will be during the Saturday of the week scheduled. The written report is due at the start of the Thursday/Saturday lecture class period of the week scheduled. 2. Laboratory assignments are to be completed before or during open lab time and are due at the beginning of the Tuesday class period. Homework assignments are expected to be completed outside class time and are due before the close of business on the assigned date. 3. All in class exams are closed book. 4. Reading of professional journals to become aware of recent developments in a subject area is an important aspect of learning that subject. One (1) report is required. 5. Any college senior, especially architects, engineers and technologists, must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Oral and written reports will be an important aspect of this course. The two written reports will consist of a summary and research paper. Student participation with this evaluation of classmates is expected. Cable viewing students may pretape their oral presentations for viewing by the class. 6. Academic Honesty. The University Academic Honesty Policy is published in the Student Handbook and students are expected to be familiar with this policy. Cheating will result in an “F” grade being assigned in this course and may result in additional action by the University. CLASS SCHEDULE

Week Lecture Lab 1 I will try to email you a reading list twice a week (the day before each scheduled live lecture) giving you specific sections of the book to read. In general, we will cover the entire book; however, in my opinion, we will not develop the use of the commands in the same order the author presents them. If you are bored, please read ahead; at the very least read the pages specifically mentioned in the reading list. Start by reading Chaps 1 and 2, and p.3-84 et seq relating to Working Units. If I forget to furnish the reading list, please “bug” me about it by posing the question!
