  • Udenrigspolitisk Redegørelse 2018
EM/2018/14 Udenrigspolitisk Redegørelse 2018 Billede: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) EM 2018/14 Sags nr. 2018 – 2195 EM 2018/14 Side 1 af 86 1.

Zircon geochronology from the Kangaatsiaq– Qasigiannguit region, the northern part of the 1.9–1.8 Ga Nagssugtoqidian orogen, West Greenland Kristine Thrane and James N. Connelly The Kangaatsiaq–Qasigiannguit region in the northern part of the Palaeoproterozoic Nagssugto- qidian orogen of West Greenland consists of poly-deformed orthogneisses and minor occurrences of interleaved, discontinuous supracrustal belts. Laser ablation ICP-MS 207Pb/206Pb analyses of detrital zircons from four metasedimentary rocks (supplemented by ion probe analysis of one sample) and igneous zircons from six granitoid rocks cutting metasedimentary units indicate that the supracrustal rocks in the Kangaatsiaq–Qasigiannguit (Christianshåb) region are predominantly Archaean in age. Four occurrences of metasedimentary rocks are clearly Archaean, two have equivocal ages, and only one metasedimentary unit, from within the Naternaq (Lersletten) supracrustal belt, is demonstrably Palaeoproterozoic and readily defines a large fold complex of this age at Naternaq. The 2.9–2.8 Ga ages of detrital Archaean grains are compatible with derivation from the local basement orthogneisses within the Nagssugtoqidian orogen. The detrital age patterns are similar to those of metasediments within the central Nagssugtoqidian orogen but distinct from age patterns in metasediments of the Rinkian belt to the north, where there is an additional component of pre-2.9 Ga zircons. Synkine- matic intrusive granitoid rocks constrain the ages of some Archaean deformation at 2748 ± 19 Ma and some

  • Mineral Exploitation and Development in Greenland: Engaging Local Workforce and Planning Flexible Settlements
Mineral Exploitation and Development in Greenland: Engaging Local Workforce and Planning Flexible Settlements Kåre Hendriksen, Birgitte Hoffmann & Ulrik Jørgensen The key question of the paper is how to plan and organize mining projects in Greenland in ways that involve local workforce and develop business as well as settlement potentials. The paper outlines a concept of flexible settlements with the aim to build a socio-economic sustainable future for Greenland. A major contemporary challenge for Greenland is its economic deficit and dependency on state support from Denmark, to maintain its living standard. The evolving decoupling between existing settlements and the main export industry based on marine living resources re-enforced by new mineral extraction based on a workforce that is working temporarily at the mining sites poses a threat to employment in Greenland. At the same time, attracting mineral resource based industries is key to overcome the economic challenges. Mining companies envisage potentials for a fast extraction of the resources using immigrant and migrant labourers that work intensively while living in temporary quarters. The historic experiences of Greenland tell that a different, slower exploitation of mineral resources may contribute to social improvements and competence-building thereby providing long-term improvements for the Greenlandic society. This point to a need for plans and the organisation of mineral exploitations that operate based on coupling local settlements and resources with mining and other forms of activities. This demands new perspectives on the content of social impact assessments as well as new criteria for the planning of settlements and infrastructures. Introduction The natural mineral and energy resources in Greenland have been researched in detail by Danish state institutions like the Danish Geological Surveys (GEUS) and the former Greenland Technical Organization (GTO) for many years.

Ries Comparative Issues in the History of Circumpolar Science and Article abstract Technology This paper explores a vacant spot in the Cold War history of science: the Volume 33, Number 2, 2010 development of research activities in the physical environmental sciences and in nuclear science and technology in Greenland. In the post-war period, URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/1006149ar scientific exploration of the polar areas became a strategically important DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1006149ar element in American and Soviet defence policy. Particularly geophysical fields like meteorology, geology, seismology, oceanography, and others profited greatly from military interest. While Denmark maintained formal sovereignty See table of contents over Greenland, research activities were strongly dominated by U.S. military interests. This paper sets out to summarize the limited current state of knowledge about activities in the environmental physical sciences in Publisher(s) Greenland and their entanglement with military, geopolitical, and colonial interests of both the USA and Denmark. We describe geophysical research in CSTHA/AHSTC the Cold War in Greenland as a multidimensional colonial endeavour. In a period of decolonization after World War II, Greenland, being a Danish colony, ISSN became additionally colonized by the American military. Concurrently, in a 0829-2507 (print) period of emerging scientific internationalism, the U.S.

(www.2dgf.dk/publikationer/bulletin). https://doi.org/10.37570/bgsd-2018-66-08 Detailed topographic data and high-resolution ground-penetrating radar (GPR) reflection data are presented from the present-day beach and across successive raised beach ridges at Itilleq, south-west Disko, West Greenland. In the western part of the study area, the present low-tide level is well Received 24 November 2017 defined by an abrupt change in sediment grain size between the sandy foreshore and the upper Accepted in revised form shoreface that is characterised by frequently occurring large clasts. The main parts of both fine and 19 April 2018 large clasts appear to be locally derived. Seaward-dipping reflections form downlap points, which Published online are clearly identified in all beach-ridge GPR profiles. Most of them are located at the boundary 7 September 2018 between a unit with reflection characteristics representing palaeo-foreshore deposits and a deeper and more complex radar unit characterised by diffractions; the deeper unit is not penetrated to large depths by the GPR signals. Based on observations of the active shoreface regime, large clasts are interpreted to give rise to scattering observed near the top of the deeper radar unit.
