Happily, our March 1st - 3rd visit to La Habra to see our son John, daughter-in- law Amy, and 6-month-old granddaughter Ellie coincided with two events in the area. On Saturday morning, John and I ran the 5K Lakewood Run. I had done this event 8 years ago on John and Amy's wedding day but it was sunny on that occasion. This time, not so much. Rain fell before, during, and after the race but John still managed a 25:17 for 3rd in the 35-39 group (23rd of 316 overall) while I came in at 23:46 for 1st in the 70+ age (18th overall). The awards ceremony was cancelled due to the weather and everyone received their medals at a booth shortly after finishing. The Lakewood Run supports the Soroptimist organization, providing programs for youth and families in the area. On Sunday morning, John opted out of running but I returned for the second time to the Tustin Hangar Half Marathon to run the 5K where I ran the inaugural event in 2017. The course for both the half and 5K runs through one of two huge dirigible hangars and provides a rare opportunity to see the inside of one of the two buildings constructed in 1942. Although decommissioned from military use in the early 1990s, they are impressive. Some folks are more interested in the hangars than in the race and stopped to take selfies. I'm more focused on the running and finished in 23:46 for 68th (out of 1,420 overall) and 2nd in the 70-74 age (some 71-year-old turned in a 22:18). Her father Bill, now 82, was an SLDC member for 25 years and ranks 15th on the all-time SLDC masters marathon list with his 2:50:49 at San Francisco in 1983.
