The beacon of knowledge illumines the symbols of the departments of Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Statistics. The computers and the conical flasks represent science and technology on the cornerstone of progress. The DNA signifies the mystery of life and inheritance that lends eternity to the wealth of knowledge and wisdom. The diversity of the symbols merge and syncretize in the globe at the centre typifying the study of Earth or Geography. Mother Earth unifies these distinct elements to reflect the conjugation of tradition with technology. Being a centre of learning, the antenna on top signifies the power to capture and disseminate the waves of wisdom among the young scholars to pave the way for a promising future. 1. LOCATION AND A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE The College is situated 14kms away from Thiruvananthapuram central, towards north at Kariavattom Junction. The approach road of the college within a distance of 500m. connects NH 47 at Kariavattom Junction. The college is within the Kazhakuttom Ward of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. This is the only one Government College within the limits of Kazhakuttom Assembly Constituency. On the west and south sides of the college is the campus of Kerala University and Technopark, and on the northern side adjacent to the college is the Lekshmi Bhai National College of Physical Education. Govt College Kariavattom Page 6 Self study report 2015 This institution was established with Arts subject courses of undergraduate wing of University College, Thiruvananthapuram during 1993-94, with minimum infrastructural facilities. During 1996-97 all undergraduate courses were shifted back to University College, Thiruvananthapuram. Meanwhile, courses in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Computer Science and Statistics were introduced at the undergraduate level and the college has been renamed as Government College, Kariavattom in 1997. Botany, Zoology, Chemistry and Mathematics are the other subjects in the above courses. Subsequently in 1998 Geography at the undergraduate level was introduced and in the year 1999-2000, two restructured double main semester courses, namely Physics and Computer Application and Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry were introduced at the undergraduate level. Geology and Statistics were introduced as subsidiary subjects for Geography. M.Sc Physics was introduced during the academic year 2011-’12. The college possesses 15 acres of land. Construction of additional blocks and expansion of laboratories and classrooms for present and future needs are going on. In general, the courses run by this college are the first of its kind in this State and are having demand and job prospects. The College represented in University, Inter-University level sports events like kho-kho, Taekwondo, Sprint and achieved medals. A unit of NSS and NCC (Naval Wing) is functioning in the College. In academics many of our students bagged ranks in the affiliated University. This college has been included in the list of colleges prepared under 2-(f) of the UGC Act 1956 and is eligible to receive assistance in terms of the rules formed under Section 12-B of the UGC Act as per letter No.F.No.8- 128/2005(CPP-1) dtd.10th October, 2009. Govt College Kariavattom Page 7 Self study report 2015 This College has been included in the concept of list of cluster of colleges of UGC. UGC has mooted the concept of cluster colleges as an arrangement for mutual sharing of resources, human and physical, among neighbouring colleges, with a view for optimum utilization of the available facilities for enhancing enrollment and quality of education. The College conducts Certificate Course in Computational Methods for Science students. Scientific computing is an inevitable tool for modern scientific research and therefore computational methods are increasingly become the part of the Post Graduate Curriculum. The objective of the designed course is to equip our students for quality research and for finding suitable positions in the scientific job market. Duration of the course is 6 months and the course is offered to the students without paying any fees. ASAP, Walk with the Scholar and Scholar support Programmes were started during 2012-13. One Post Graduate Course in Physics was sanctioned by the University during 2012-13. Remedial Coaching SC/ST/OBC and other minorities was initiated in the college during 2010-11 with financial assistance from UGC. LOCATION OF THE COLLEGE This college is located in Kazhakuttom Ward, Trivandrum District, just 12 kilometres away from Trivandrum. The nearest airport is Trivandrum and the railway station is at Kazhakuttom. This college is located near the biggest IT park in India – Technopark.
