The beacon of knowledge illumines the symbols of the departments of Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Statistics. The computers and the conical flasks represent science and technology on the cornerstone of progress. The DNA signifies the mystery of life and inheritance that lends eternity to the wealth of knowledge and wisdom. The diversity of the symbols merge and syncretize in the globe at the centre typifying the study of Earth or Geography. Mother Earth unifies these distinct elements to reflect the conjugation of tradition with technology. Being a centre of learning, the antenna on top signifies the power to capture and disseminate the waves of wisdom among the young scholars to pave the way for a promising future. 1. LOCATION AND A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE The College is situated 14kms away from Thiruvananthapuram central, towards north at Kariavattom Junction. The approach road of the college within a distance of 500m. connects NH 47 at Kariavattom Junction. The college is within the Kazhakuttom Ward of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. This is the only one Government College within the limits of Kazhakuttom Assembly Constituency. On the west and south sides of the college is the campus of Kerala University and Technopark, and on the northern side adjacent to the college is the Lekshmi Bhai National College of Physical Education. Govt College Kariavattom Page 6 Self study report 2015 This institution was established with Arts subject courses of undergraduate wing of University College, Thiruvananthapuram during 1993-94, with minimum infrastructural facilities. During 1996-97 all undergraduate courses were shifted back to University College, Thiruvananthapuram. Meanwhile, courses in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Computer Science and Statistics were introduced at the undergraduate level and the college has been renamed as Government College, Kariavattom in 1997. Botany, Zoology, Chemistry and Mathematics are the other subjects in the above courses. Subsequently in 1998 Geography at the undergraduate level was introduced and in the year 1999-2000, two restructured double main semester courses, namely Physics and Computer Application and Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry were introduced at the undergraduate level. Geology and Statistics were introduced as subsidiary subjects for Geography. M.Sc Physics was introduced during the academic year 2011-’12. The college possesses 15 acres of land. Construction of additional blocks and expansion of laboratories and classrooms for present and future needs are going on. In general, the courses run by this college are the first of its kind in this State and are having demand and job prospects. The College represented in University, Inter-University level sports events like kho-kho, Taekwondo, Sprint and achieved medals. A unit of NSS and NCC (Naval Wing) is functioning in the College. In academics many of our students bagged ranks in the affiliated University. This college has been included in the list of colleges prepared under 2-(f) of the UGC Act 1956 and is eligible to receive assistance in terms of the rules formed under Section 12-B of the UGC Act as per letter No.F.No.8- 128/2005(CPP-1) dtd.10th October, 2009. Govt College Kariavattom Page 7 Self study report 2015 This College has been included in the concept of list of cluster of colleges of UGC. UGC has mooted the concept of cluster colleges as an arrangement for mutual sharing of resources, human and physical, among neighbouring colleges, with a view for optimum utilization of the available facilities for enhancing enrollment and quality of education. The College conducts Certificate Course in Computational Methods for Science students. Scientific computing is an inevitable tool for modern scientific research and therefore computational methods are increasingly become the part of the Post Graduate Curriculum. The objective of the designed course is to equip our students for quality research and for finding suitable positions in the scientific job market. Duration of the course is 6 months and the course is offered to the students without paying any fees. ASAP, Walk with the Scholar and Scholar support Programmes were started during 2012-13. One Post Graduate Course in Physics was sanctioned by the University during 2012-13. Remedial Coaching SC/ST/OBC and other minorities was initiated in the college during 2010-11 with financial assistance from UGC. LOCATION OF THE COLLEGE This college is located in Kazhakuttom Ward, Trivandrum District, just 12 kilometres away from Trivandrum. The nearest airport is Trivandrum and the railway station is at Kazhakuttom. This college is located near the biggest IT park in India – Technopark. The present study was carried out to evaluate the distribution and diversity of oligochaete fauna in selected pondsof Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala, South India. The sediment samples were collected from three ponds seasonally during the period December 2006 to November 2008. In the study, 10 oligochaete species which belong to 8 genera were identified in three selected ponds. These include Dero digitata, Dero nivea, Dero obtusa, Pristina longiseta, Aulophorus furcatus, Stylaria fossularis, Chaetogaster spp., Aeolosoma spp., Tubifex tubifex and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri. Tubifex tubifex and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri are the pollution-indicator oligochaete species identified in the fresh water ponds, which reveals that the studied ponds are subjected to pollution. 1.     University Profile & Fact Sheet University of Kerala 2016 A PROFILE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KERALA 1. Genesis & Evolution: One of the first 16 Universities in India, the University of Kerala was founded as the University of Travancore in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore (now southern part of Kerala) in 1937. Since then, the University of Kerala has transformed itself in many ways. The earliest origins of the University may be traced back to two institutions of modern learning in Kerala, the University College Thiruvananthapuram and the Trivandrum Observatory1. The University was modeled after the best Universities of the United Kingdom, and even today retains some of these features. The affiliating system of the University, however, evolved to be different from the college system in British Universities. The objective of the University was to effect re-organization of the system of education in the state so as to develop technical, technological education and research in applied science, in addition to promoting Kerala Art and Culture. The Logo of the University depicts a lotus with a conch shell (a symbol of erstwhile state of Travancore) and a traditional book stand with palm leaf manuscript on it, symbolizing scholarship. The motto of the University was drawn from Panchathanthra (a Buddhist work) and reads “Karmani Vyajyathe Prajna” which roughly translates to “Wisdom manifests in action”2 In 1954, the unified state of Kerala came into being. The Kerala University Act was brought into force in 1957 and the University of Travancore was renamed University of Kerala (a name which was considered even in 1937) with jurisdiction all over the state of Kerala.

Kerala. Abstract: This study is aimed to study the nest orientation of Apis dorsata in relation to cell tower in the Kariavattom panchayat of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. The distributions and orientation of nests were observed around 5 km of cell tower using a survey method . Results showed that 60 nests (40 active nests, 20 abandoned combs) of A. dorsata were found. Tree species used as nesting sites were Ficus sp.(Moraceae), Adenanthera sp.(Fabaceae), Spondias pinnata (Anacardiaceae), Artocarpus sericoarpus (Moraceae), Alstonia scholaris (Apocynaceae), Knema cinerea (Myristicaceae) and Litsea mappacea (Lauraceae).The nests in trees were found in 3-11 meters (5 nests), 11-25 meters (20 nests), and 20 – 35 meters on buildings ( 35 nests).Maximum nets on building was noted on the top of Greenfield International Stadium (30 nests) . Most of the bee nests were oriented towards South east direction and minimum towards south west direction on buildings and trees. In the South east direction maximum bee hive orientation was noted both on trees and buildings where radiation exposure from cell towers was minimum ( 0.20 w/m2 ) whereas in the South west direction minimum bee hive orientation was recorded where the radiation exposure was maximum ( 9.20w/m2). She also has obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from All India Management Association (AIMA). Has got 30 years of professional experience. The field of experience and expertise includes Highway Engineering, Water Transport, Management Information System, Road Safety, S&T Management and Administration. She has worked in various positions as Design Engineer in Kerala Electricals and Allied Engineering Company, as Scientific Officer (Technology) in Science & Technology Department and as Scientist in NATPAC. The traffic is expected to grow in the upcoming years with the commissioning of all the three phases of Technopark. The generated traffic from Technopark during peak hours and through traffic on NH 66 Bypass will cause severe traffic congestion on the road stretch from Kazhakkoottam and Thampuran Nada. Electronics Technology Park, Kerala entrusted NATPAC to suggest possible solutions for easing the traffic considering the formation of entries to the NH 66 Bypass. Technopark is located near Kazhakoottam on National Highway 66 Ensuring mobility by reducing Bypass (NH 66), which connects Kazhakoottam on NH - 66 and its negative impact on the Mukkola near Kovalam. Once the Technopark becomes fully functional, it is expected to have 10 entries/exits on NH 66 Bypass.
