IUPUI locks out handicapped

It had been an especially tiring day for Jim Wokten before be wheeled up to the 38th Street Campus, Computer Lab. He did not jump out of his car- he couldn't. He did not leisurely walk the few steps to the Administration Build­ ing entrance- he couldn't. He did not climb the steps to the computer lab area in the building- he couldn't. As hard as Jim Wolden might try, he could not have done any of these seemingly everyday activities, and what is even more saddening is the fact that Jim never reached the computer lab last Saturday. For three Saturdays in a row in fact, Jim was unable to get to his destination. Several able-bodied students scurried into the building. They arrived there quite safely- without any mishaps or unusual incidents. There was a time when Jim w u able to study in the building or do the research so important to his education or to test a computer program he had written in the labs on Saturdays or Sundays, but no longer is he allowed access to the building on weekends. Jim did not desire his exclusion. He did not want to be confined to a wheel­ chair But he is and although he has accepted his handicap, Jim is not strong enough to fight a university which locks his only means of access to the build­ ing in which he and many others with similar handicaps must study. A freight elevator once allowed handicapped students to enter the 38th Street facilities unassisted, but a few weeks ago the power was turned off on the weekends. No longer were the handicapped wheel-chair students given the opportunity to use the necessary equipment in the building which their able-bodied counterparts enjoyed.
