REVIEWS REVIEWS No Place for Truth: or Whatever Happened to Evangelical Theology? David Wells Eerdmans, Grand Rapids, 1993; 336pp., £18.99; ISBN 0 8028 3713 1 This is an excellent book. Focussed on the situation in the United States, it provides a devastating indictment of an evangelical culture that has capitulated alarmingly to secularity and modernity. It has lost theology. That, someone may say, does not matter so much as long as we have not lost God. David Wells explodes that claim. In losing theology we do lose God; loss of theology is both a way of losing and a sign of the loss of God. This volume sustains the point in a wide--ranging and penetrating critique. The tone of the book is not irenic, nor should it be, if the author's contention is correct. For this would be to cry peace where there is no peace. Neither is it bitterly polemical. It is a straightforward address. The author achieves this in extremely well-written prose, never obscuring the message by its performance but clothing it to good effect. Until the end of the book, the reader may be worried on one important score, namely that it is negative, indicating the problems but touching only in the most general way on what is positively required. However, the author takes care of that worry by announcing that he has set out to be diagnostic in this volume and will follow it up with constructive remedies in the next. To say that a reader should look forward to the next volume is not to take David Wells seriously enough; we need the next volume. -

MJT 10 (1999) 259-302 BOOK REVIEWS Preaching from the Minor Prophets: Texts and Sermon Suggestions by Elizabeth Achtemeier. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1998. Pp. xii + 143. $14.00. This book is the natural follow-up to Achtemeier’s earlier commentary works for Hendrickson Publishers (1996) and John Knox Press (1986). Achtemeier has written very readable commentary studies on each of the Minor Prophets. This latest book on preaching is a more focused examination of Old Testament preaching, making this book a welcome follow-up to her 1989 book Preaching from the Old Testament (Louisville: Westminster/John Knox Press). Achtemeier is recently retired adjunct professor of Bible and homiletics at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, a school that has served the Presbyterian Church in the United States (now merged with the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America) for many years. Achtemeier asserts that the church and its pulpits have long neglected the rich treasure that can be found in the Minor Prophets, despite the fact that “these twelve books are an important part of the church’s canon, writings that make up a portion of our authority for all faith and practice. Through these books the voice of the living God continues to speak. And through these books the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is revealed, as he has worked in that span of salvation history that runs from Genesis through Revelation— that span in which you and I still stand and from which we find the basis for all our living” (p. 2). The author realizes that since many church members (including many preachers) know so little about the Minor 260 • MID-AMERICA JOURNAL OF THEOLOGY Prophets, they will have to “wrestle” with the message of these prophetic books without the benefit of much past tradition. -

19 - Biographical Sketches for EVIDENCE – Combined Documents A Achtemeier, Elizabeth (1926 – 2002) Elizabeth Achtemeier was an adjunct professor of Bible and homiletics at Union Theological Seminary as well as a long-time member of the Theological Task Force on Peace, Unity, and Purity. Achtemeier is a graduate of Union Theological Seminary and did postgraduate work at Heidelberg University (Germany) and Basel University (Switzerland) before earning a PhD in Old Testament from Columbia University. Her work as a scholar, preacher, and lecturer earned her recognition as one of the leading evangelical voices in the Presbyterian Church. Ackroyd, Peter Runham (1917 – 2005) Peter Runham Ackroyd was a British biblical scholar, Anglican priest, and former Congregational minister. From 1961 to 1982 he was the Samuel Davidson Professor of Old Testament Studies at the University of London. He was also president of the Society of Old Testament Study in 1972. Ordained a Congregational minister in 1940, Ackroyd was drawn to Anglicanism in the 1950s and was ordained in the Church of England in 1958. He later became a lecturer and then a full professor at several British universities. Ackroyd's research focused on the Old Testament and he authored a number of books. Adams, Matthew J. Matthew Adams is director of the Albright Institute of Archaeological Research, Jerusalem, and president of American Archaeology Abroad Inc. Adams holds an MA and PhD from the Department of History and Religious Studies at Pennsylvania State University and teaches the languages and literatures of Europe and the Americas at the University of Hawaii, Manoah. Adams was the director of the Jezreel Valley Regional Project. -

How Do We Talk About God? Jack Rogers My first General Assembly as a comm1ss10ner, 1971, had most of the dramatic elements that would occupy my attention for the next thirty years. We made very positive history by electing the first woman moderator of the Presbyterian Church in its 183-year history. We had been ordaining women as elders since 1930, but no woman elder had been elected moderator until Lois Stair, a highly competent and good humored elder from Wisconsin, was handed the gavel. She represented the solid core of women who, throughout history, had been doing much of the work of the church with little recognition. We made a decision that, from then on, opened the highest level of leadership in the Presbyterian community to women who make up over half its members. We also spent a great deal of time in 1971 talking about another woman. Her name was Angela Davis. This black woman was a Communist and was charged with complicity in a murder. The Council on Church and Race had made a grant of $10,000 to her legal defense fund. The issue for the members of the council was simply whether this black woman could get a fair trial. From the hours of debate at the assembly and the huge controversy that erupted in the church at large, it was clear that there were other issues. Should the church be involved in American society as an agent of change? At another level, for some people, the question was, perhaps, should the church be involved with people who disagree with us politically and are not part of our community? In a church that is 96 percent Caucasian and whose members dominantly vote Republican, what business do we have in being, in any way, related to Angela Davis? It was ultimately determined that the members of the Council of Church and Race had acted properly.
