Mise en Scéne Winter Edition VOLUME 6 ISSUE 3 CSUEB Spellers take the stage in Inside this Issue "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" Director, Marc Jacobs, shares his thoughts on this musical comedy Upcoming Shows 2 My first encounter with "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" was with the Post Street Theatre in San Francisco, 10 years ago. This was the first Our Students 3 production after the original Broadway cast, and I had several friends in the show, which was cast locally. One of the cast members was James Monroe Checking In 4 Iglehart (CSUEB Graduate) who had been in previous musicals I had directed in San Jose. James has since gone on to win the Tony Award as the Genie in Disney’s Broadway production of "Aladdin." James was playing 'Comfort Guest Artists 5 Counselor' Mitch Mahoney in "Spelling Bee," and his performance was so perfect that the producers decided to model every subsequent 'Mitch' on James’ performance. Another friend in the show was Aaron Albano, who had Featured Faculty 7 started out as one of the teenagers in my production of The Music Man that I directed in San Jose, and has since gone on to appear on Broadway in The Wiz, Newsies, and currently in Allegiance. The San Francisco company of Information 9 "Spelling Bee" was so successful, that the producers ultimately used those actors to replace the Broadway company once the original actors were ready to leave the show. One of those original actors, Sarah Salzburg ‒ the original “Schwarzy” in ‘Spelling Bee - was the daughter of a good friend of mine. -

The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance
Gordon 1 Jessica Gordon 29 March 2010 Honors Thesis Everything was Beautiful at the Ballet: The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance During the mid-1860s, a ballet troupe from Paris was brought to the Academy of Music in lower Manhattan. Before the company’s first performance, however, the theatre in which they were to dance was destroyed in a fire. Nearby, producer William Wheatley was preparing to begin performances of The Black Crook, a melodrama with music by Charles M. Barras. Seeing an opportunity, Wheatley conceived the idea to combine his play and the displaced dance company, mixing drama and spectacle on one stage. On September 12, 1866, The Black Crook opened at Niblo’s Gardens and was an immediate sensation. Wheatley had unknowingly created a new American art form that would become a tradition for years to come. Since the first performance of The Black Crook, dance has played an important role in musical theatre. From the dream ballet in Oklahoma to the “Dance at the Gym” in West Side Story to modern shows such as Movin’ Out, dance has helped tell stories and engage audiences throughout musical theatre history. Dance has not always been as integrated in musicals as it tends to be today. I plan to examine the moments in history during which the role of dance on the Broadway stage changed and how those changes affected the manner in which dance is used on stage today. Additionally, I will discuss the important choreographers who have helped develop the musical theatre dance styles and traditions. As previously mentioned, theatrical dance in America began with the integration of European classical ballet and American melodrama. -

PRESS RELEASE NORTH HIGH SCHOOL to present PETER PAN or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up The Appleton North High School Theatre Department will present the play PETER PAN or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up on May 16th through the 19th in the North High School Auditorium, 5000 North Ballard Road. This new version adapted from the original J.M. Barrie play and novel by Trevor Nunn and John Caird for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of London enjoyed phenomenal success when first produced. The famous team known for their productions of THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF NICHOLAS NICKLEBY and the musical LES MISERABLES have painstakingly researched and restored Barrie’s original play. “. .a national masterpiece.”—London Times. This is the beloved story of Peter, Wendy, Michael, John, Capt. Hook, Smee, the lost boys, pirates, and the Indians, and of course, Tinker Bell, in their adventures in Never Land. However, for the first time, the play is here restored to Barrie’s original intentions. In the words of adaptor, John Caird: “ We were fascinated to discover that there was no one single document called PETER PAN. What we found was a tantalizing number of different versions, all of them containing some very agreeable surprises….We have made some significant alterations, the greatest of which is the introduction of a new character, the Storyteller, who is in fact the author himself.” North’s theatre director, Ron Parker, states, “This is a very different PETER PAN than the one most people are familiar with. It is neither the popular musical version nor the Disney animated recreation, but goes back to Barrie’s original play and novel. -

“Come on along, you can’t go wrong Kicking the clouds away!” Broadway was booming in the 1920s with the energy of youth and new ideas roaring across the nation. In New York City, immigrants such as George Gershwin were infusing American music with their own indigenous traditions. The melting pot was cooking up a completely new sound and jazz was a key ingredient. At the time, radio and the phonograph weren’t widely available; sheet music and live performances remained the popular ways to enjoy the latest hits. In fact, New York City’s Tin Pan Alley was overflowing with "song pluggers" like George Gershwin who demonstrated new tunes to promote the sale of sheet music. George and his brother Ira Gershwin composed music and lyrics for the 1927 Broadway musical Funny Face. It was the second musical they had written as a vehicle for Fred and Adele Astaire. As such, Funny Face enabled the tap-dancing duo to feature new and well-loved routines. During a number entitled “High Hat,” Fred sported evening clothes and a top hat while tapping in front of an enormous male chorus. The image of Fred during that song became iconic and versions of the routine appeared in later years. The unforgettable score featured such gems as “’S Wonderful,” “My One And Only,” “He Loves and She Loves,” and “The Babbitt and the Bromide.” The plot concerned a girl named Frankie (Adele Astaire), who persuaded her boyfriend Peter (Allen Kearns) to help retrieve her stolen diary from Jimmie Reeve (Fred Astaire). However, Peter pilfered a piece of jewelry and a wild chase ensued. -

THE ELIXIR OF LOVE FOR FAMILIES PRODUCTION TEAM BIOGRAPHY MARTIN PAKLEDINAZ, Costume Designer Martin Pakledinaz is an American Tony Award-winning costume designer for stage and film. His work on Broadway includes The Pajama Game, The Trip to Bountiful, Wonderful Town, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Kiss Me, Kate, The Boys From Syracuse, The Diary Of Anne Frank, A Year With Frog And Toad, The Life, Anna Christie, The Father, and Golden Child. Off-Broadway work includes Two Gentlemen of Verona, Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party, Kimberly Akimbo, Give Me Your Answer, Do, Juvenalia, The Misanthrope, Kevin Kline's Hamlet, Twelve Dreams, Waste, and Troilus and Cressida. He won two Tony Awards for designing the costumes of Thoroughly Modern Millie and the 2000 revival of Kiss Me Kate, which also earned him the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Costume Design. He has designed plays for the leading regional theatres of the United States, and the Royal Dramatic Theatre of Sweden. Opera credits include works at the New York Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera, as well as opera houses in Seattle, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Sante Fe, Houston, and Toronto. European houses include Salzburg, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Helsinki, Gothenburg, and others. His dance credits include a long collaboration with Mark Morris, and dances for such diverse choreographers as George Balanchine, Eliot Feld, Deborah Hay, Daniel Pelzig, Kent Stowell, Helgi Tomasson, and Lila York.
