38. State whether the programme/ department is accredited/ graded by other agencies. Give details. No

39. Detail any five Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Challenges (SWOC) of the department

Strength:

i) good teacher-student ratio

ii) sincere and effective faculty

iii) library support and inhouse photocopying and e-facilities

iv) extensive democratic space for all stakeholders

v) in-house career counseling facilities

Weakness:

i) need for more students cutting across all categories

ii) dedicated classrooms wanting

iii) need for more time for faculty for pursuing research in and out of the institution

iv) family quarters for all categories of staff in the vicinity of the institution

v) dedicated games room with basic provisions for indoor games for faculty and staff

Opportunities:

i) a campus in the city in Golpark , the cultural hub of the Mission ,which is already in place for long, to draw talent and the best minds

ii) student exchange programmes between different centres of the Mission

iii) Research and development exchanges for faculty of the Mission in its institutes of higher learning as also in rural development initiatives of the Mission and its affiliates

12

iv) Charted conveyance for staff and faculty from some points in Kolkata and the local area, since the institution is well connected by rail and roadways

v) The department, with its stress on social science studies, stands to engage in a mutual learning experience with new centres of interdisciplinary studies by waqy of formally collaborating with other departments of the institutions

Challenges:

i) The subject itself seems to be viewed as not as helpful in securing jobs as the languages or history. It remains a task for the department to generate awareness that this reading is not exactly accurate.

ii) Further, the learning of the discipline itself needs to be evaluated by means of examinations etc, but subjective factors may come to play a role in objective assessment. Many of the issues the subject deals with are essentially political questions of a delicate nature and where taking sides, even if perceived of in such terms by the examiner, may lead to undesirable outcomes for the student

iii) Pending faculty vacancies take a long time to fill up, something that a semester based system can ill-afford

iv) The department caters to the rural areas of the state on the main, where the medium of instruction is the vernacular, and students rarely can access books and documents in English, which is often of utmost importance in the pursuit of higher education. Translations cannot perhaps be substitutes for the original writing.

v) The contemporary climate of learning by rote seems to have largely coloured the minds of students from a very tender age. The outlook needs to change, but the task in this is extremely daunting, since the institution is meant for students who are on the threshold of adulthood, and unlearning something which they have been used to for long is difficult

40. Future plans of the department.

i) New Academic Programmes:

ii) Academic Seminars and Conferences:

iii) Infrastructural Development:

We propose to have:  JSTOR subscription by the college facilitating research initiatives  Launching of an e-library in the college for better availability of teaching materials
