HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE RECOMMENDATION: State

Description: Coursed tuck-pointed stonework with dressed surrounds, plinth and quoins Substantial dressed stone parapets. Hanson Street's main parapet has a segmentyal pediment, corbels and stone finials. Windows of th1s elevat1or are arched with moulded sills, keystones and there is a moulded str1ng course. Doors and windows on the left hand end of this elevation have shelf pediments. The Cooke Street elevation is partly dressed stone with windows set under dressed surrounds and have shelf pediments. The door o1 this elevation has a multi-paned semi-circular fanlight. Beh1nd the Post Office is a more simple residence with random coursed stonework and dressed quoins. This section has a corrugated galvanized iron hipped roo1 and hipped front verandah. The verandah has timber lattice work and the residence has a dressed stone chimney. Double hung sash windows.

Second Post Office in ~·ingston. Local builders; stone probably quarried at Mount Bensot1. Built, like the Cou1~t House, in prepal~ation for the influx of business from new Hundreds. Part of the centre of business sector in government town .

HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE RECOMMENDATION: State

Description: Steel frame with corrugated galvanized iron walled eight roomed house built within the structure, 6.00 metres above the ground. The lighthouse is 33.00 metres high and the structure consists of a large proportion of w ~~ought 1 l~on.

Designed in 1867, for the , after agitation by insurance officers, ship owners and ship masters. Port Caroline had been proclaimed as a port in 1865. Based on a screw pile design with 13 foundation piles <200 mm. dia.>, to which the screws were attached, drilled 2.70 1Y1etres into the reef. It took thirteen months to drill the piles and it took about three years to complete the lighthouse, which was officially opet1ed in January, 1872. In 1969 it was decided to partly dismantle the lighthouse and after negotiations by the Kingston Branch o1 the National Trust, the lighthouse was re-erected on its present site in 1975 and was handed over to the National Trust in January, 1976. The base structure and platform remain on the reef.

Descript1on: Random coursed stone wall with large flat stone capping and siMple iron gates. SoMe sections of the wall in need of repair.

Land purchased from James and Archibald Cooke in 1875. At the time of th1 first burial (19 July, 1877) a wall existed. Gates purchased 13 Novembe November, 1876. MaJor expenses of 1880 and 1884 May have been extensions to wall.

Description: Yellow painted random rubble stonework with arched windows and doors Small plinth. Corrugated galvanized iron hipped roof with dressed chimneys. Double hung sash windows . Central section symmetrical with small side windows to door with semicircular fanlight High wall encloses rear courtyard.

Erected by a local builder to a government contract. Followed on proclamation of Port Caroline in 1865. With Court House and Post Office became the nucleus of the government town. Additions and repairs 1871 am 1876.

Desc1~i pt ion: Random rubble stonework with cream pa1nted facade. Aged corrugated galvanized iron M-shaped roof. Large arched opening on front elevation, which used to be used for railway trucks for transport of produce to and from the Jetty.

Only survivor of three or four such wool stores. Railway lines crossed street to each. Was Dalgety & Co.'s wool store.

Built, like the Timber Store adJoining, by John Jones Jarman, noted local merchant and contractor. Named after his wife, who was Miss Annie Goodwin.

Description: Random rubble stonework with weatherboard additions. Red aluminium tiles recently replaced slates on roof.

Built for James Cooke, a founder of Kingston. Named 'Otter House' after Otter Ferry in Scotland. James Cooke died here in 1892. The 'authorities' give four dates for this building, from the 1840's to after 1878.

Description: Random rubble stonework with arched door on east elevation, adJacent the woolroom. Corrugated galvanized iron gable ended roof with western section pitched almost to ground level, enclkosing undercover sheep pens. Circular ventilators at the apex of the roof.

Station established by Andrew Hutchison, son of William, in late 1880's when legislation was such that local pastoralists could build up family estates by putting forward their sons as selectors. Ruin of Hutchison an~ Dunn in 1893 meant sale to J.F. and T.S. Ryder, who were building their own e«•Pi re.

HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE RECOMMENDATION: State

Description: Painted random coursed stonework w1th dressed quoins. Corrugated galvanized iron gable ended roof. Small porch on front elevation with side door and pointed arched window. Pointed arched windows. along side elevations. Timber eaves brackets under eaves.

Built in government town by local builders on government contract, 1n expectation of increased need after proclamation of new Hundreds. Local Court established by Act of 1870. Cases hitherto conducted in Circuit Court in hotels, or at District Court at Robe. Court House saw many cases of illegal depasturing of stock, and defaulting on debt; also stock theft, and drunkenness by sailors.

HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE RECOMMENDATION: State

Description: Painted random rubble (slightly coursed) stonework. Corrugated galvanized iron hipped roof with concave verandahs. Symmetrical facade with two side wings at the bu1lding's rear. Double hung sash windows and two bay windows on the front elevation, either side of the front door. Front door has sidelights and a semicircular fanl1ght. Verandah has elegant turned verandah posts.

Station founded by Peter MacDonald in 1859. Transferred to John Gall and partner in 1863. Soon sold to Bainton. Gall bought it back as part of holdings includitlg "Tilley's Swa«•P" and "Marcollat". In hard times he got the mail contract Meningie to Kingston, so from 1882 or 1883 found it convenient to live at "Cantara". He played a large part in civic affa1rs e.g. was a Chairman of Lacepede District Council.

Description: White pa1nted random rubble stonework with quoins. Steecly pitched corrugated galvanized iron hipped roof extending into verandahs on the east and west elevations. Servants' quarters building behind the the main house. White painted stone walls around the front and rear gardens. Double hung sash windows.

Station founded by George Kendle and Thomas Wood in the 1840's. Then taken up by Donald Gollan. House described by Goyder in 1865 or 1866 as four rooms, stone, separate kitchen and huts. Had a slate roof Cc.1875> when sold to Hutchison and Dunn. On their ruin in 1893, station sold to Thomas H. Fraser, who was building holdings 40 miles across. Used for experiments in soil treatment and pasture improvement in 1890's.

Compulsory schooling dated from 1875, and in 1878 new Hundreds were proclaimed in the Kingston district. This school began as two rooms and a cloak room.

Station founded in 1846 by the widow Margaret Hutchison, who had trekked from Victoria with her young family. Named after family home in Scotland. Co-founder may have been Andrew Dunn, whom she married about that time. Her son WilliaiY• Hutchison, in partnership with Dunn, built up 'one of the biggest combinations ever connected with the pastoral interests of the south-east.' . Foul~ of her daughters IY « at·t~ied South East pastoral ists. 'Although the occupation licences carried the right to build on Crown lands, only Margaret Hutchison built a permanent house in the beginni ng. She had a large family to shelter.' . Mrs. Hutchison lived at "Woolmit" till het• death in 1878. Hutchisot1 and Dunn were ruined by the depression in 1893.

H.C. Talbot gave James Brown the credit of founding "Tilley's Swa.Ytp" for which the lease was issued in 1859. John Gall bought it from James Foot and, after living with his wife in a wattle and daub hut, built a new homestead in 1866. He held the adJacet1t "Cantal'a" ar1d "MaPcollat" runs 300 square 1Y1iles in all, concentratit1g at "Tilley's Swamp" on sheep. Fron 1883 he lived at "Cantara". Lease still in the hands of Gall fa«tily in 1920's.

The "Avenue Range" run, also called "Kalyra" or "k:eilira", was taken up in 1849 by James Brown, notorious for tales of his murder of Aborigines. The first homestead, with a thatched roof, was extant in 1968. The second, of stone with 10 rooms and a verandah, was built after Brown obtained some security of tenure by purchasing a block from the Government. Brown still held ~~~~eil11·a", with ne1ghbou1~ing "Blackfol~d", in the late 1880's. The existing house was built by Kelly c. 1900.

Built as a Congregational Church on the urging of the missionary David Milne, who was orda1ned in Kingston in 1869, and who spread Congreg­ ationalism throughout the Upper South East. Begun in the 1860's, the hotel 'was the Kingston terminus of the Adela1de to Port MacDonnell coach service and a conven1ent place of call for the teamsters who brought the wool from the outback stations to the Cooke's stores on the opposite s1te of the road.' (M. Dunn). Used at this tirYre by circuit JUdge, J.P., and visiting government officials meeting deputations. Early 1880's : improved and extended to accommodate tourists and businessmen in a time of prosperity. People stayed overnight in Kingston to connect with passenger ships, railway or mail coach. Advertised in 1883 as 'the largest and most convenient hotel in Kingston, being nearest the railway and Jetty'.

An Institute committee was formed by 1867, with a library and read1ng room in the schoolhouse. Need was felt for an Institute building, for public meetings and danc1ng, and as 'essential to set the seal of worth upon the town.• CM. Dunn>. The minority keen for such a building­ squatters, commercial men, professionals - raised money by entertainments such as concerts, plays and debates. Town praised for its public speakers. Building completed by 1878. Had •a beautiful stage with a drop curtain depicting a scene of the River Danube. The inhabitants of the area felt that the Albert District Roads Board was neglecting them, and James Cooke petitioned for a District Counc1l ir 1872. The next year the District Council of Lacepede was proclaimed. In the early 1880's 'the increase in the population st1mulated the develop­ ment of a greater sense of pride in the town and more efforts were made to impt~ove its appeat~ance.' . Formerly the Bank of Adelaide and one of the earliest buildings of Charles Dover, Kingston's first stonemason. 'Kingston started upon a period of rapid building operations in 1868. They were stimulated by the knowledge that the government intended making the town a railway port ••• As soon as the Border Ra1lway Bill was tabled 1n Parliament, three Adelaide banks formed branches at Kingston (M. Dunn>. Presence of banks further stimulated the area.
