ISLAND REPORTER ISLAND LIVING SEPTEMBER 4,2008 B Island turns Children's Education Center celebrates milestone BylDAVAYNBERG [email protected] Tucked away behind the seagrape hedges on Casa Ybel Road, the Children's Education Center of the Islands — with its brightly lit and colorful classrooms filled with the warmth and dedication of its staff— has fixed its place in Sanibel's history as it celebrates "35 years of Dedication to Education." In 1974, a group of parents decided to start the school where 3- and 4-year-olds could could partake in group social activities to help prepare them for kindergarten. They call themselves a "true community school," declaring their ded- ication to serving the island's residents and employees regardless of their income, race or religion. Their mission is to create a nurturing environment that pro- duces joyful, curious and confi- dent children by combining a diversified, developmental ly- appropriate curriculum and a parent partnership system. Here, parents serve on the Children's Education Center Board of Directors and assist with run- ning the school. "The Children's Education Center is 'one of a kind' in that it was estab- lished 35 years ago by Sanibel families as a parent co- op rather than a privately owned school," said Jana Yates, the school's director. "Over the years, the school retained the family as it's primary focus. With the concern for the child's education at it's center, the facul- ty, staff and parents, function as one family unit." The tuition fees cover educational expenses, and the school depends on fundraising and donations for capital improvements and donations. In November, the school will hold another one of its fundraisers, where a Vespa scooter will be raffled off at the Bank of the Islands for $20 per ticket. Today, this parent co-op takes care of 49 families and welcomed a total of 24 new ones at the beginning of the school year few weeks ago. They have a total of six teachers and 51 students, ages 2 to 5. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a replacement to write the Rotary column and let you know how outstanding our speakers really were and inform the community why they were asked to speak at Rotary in the first place. That being said, I would like to recognize and thank those speakers and hope in the future Rotary will invite them back: Aug. 8 — Wendy Erter-Schnapp, owner/operator of Tarpon Bay Explorers; Aug. 15 — John Strickling, Hope Hospice; and Aug. 22 — Ken Rasi, The Island Sun.
