Natura 2000 Sites within 15km of Proposed Development ................................................... 14 March 2020 Page iii Enviroguide Consulting Vicar Street Improvement Scheme Appropriate Assessment Screening Report Vicar Street, Kilkenny 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background Enviroguide Consulting were commissioned by Kilkenny County Council to carry out an Ap- propriate Assessment Screening Report in relation to the Vicar Street Improvement Scheme, in Kilkenny City. This report contains information to enable the competent authority (Kilkenny County Council) to undertake Stage 1 Appropriate Assessment screening in respect of the proposed works. 1.2 Legislative Background The Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) seeks to conserve natural habitats and wild fauna and flora by the designation of SACs and the Birds Directive (79/409/EEC) seeks to protect birds of special importance by the designation of SPAs. It is the responsibility of each member state to designate SPAs and SACs, both of which will form part of Natura 2000, a network of pro- tected sites throughout the European Community. Member States are required to designate Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protected Areas (SPAs) under the EU Habitats and Birds Directives, respectively. SACs and SPAs are collectively known as Natura 2000 sites. An ‘Appropriate Assessment’ (AA) is a required assessment to determine

    Sciomyzidae Recording Scheme Newsletter 3: September 2003 Introduction This Newsletter gives news of progress with the Sciomyzidae Recording Scheme, includes a summary of currently available identification literature that can be used to determine the British species and announces a call in for available records prior to the production of a new identification guide to the British and Irish fauna. The Sciomyzidae Recording Scheme covers the 68 species of Sciomyzidae (67 species in Chandler, 1998 plus one added since by Cole, 2003) recorded from Britain and Ireland, plus the two species of Pelidnoptera now included in the Phaeomyiidae. The latter (Pelidnoptera fuscipennis and P. nigripennis) were formerly included as a subfamily of the Sciomyzidae, but Griffiths (1972) elevated the group to family status as part of a detailed phylogenetic study of the Diptera Cyclorrhapha using characters of the male genitalia. Additional evidence that supports the family status of the Phaeomyiidae has been obtained by Vala et al. (1990) who discovered that Pelidnoptera nigripennis has larvae that are specialist parasitoids of millipedes, whereas the larvae of all Sciomyzidae that have been reared feed on molluscs.     SITE SYNOPSIS SITE NAME: RIVER BARROW AND RIVER NORE SITE CODE: 002162 This site consists of the freshwater stretches of the Barrow/Nore River catchments as far upstream as the Slieve Bloom Mountains and it also includes the tidal elements and estuary as far downstream as Creadun Head in Waterford. The site passes through eight counties – Offaly, Kildare, Laois, Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Wexford and Waterford. Major towns along the edge of the site include Mountmellick, Portarlington, Monasterevin, Stradbally, Athy, Carlow, Leighlinbridge, Graiguenamanagh, New Ross, Inistioge, Thomastown, Callan, Bennettsbridge, Kilkenny and Durrow. The larger of the many tributaries include the Lerr, Fushoge, Mountain, Aughavaud, Owenass, Boherbaun and Stradbally Rivers of the Barrow and the Delour, Dinin, Erkina, Owveg, Munster, Arrigle and King’s Rivers on the Nore. Both rivers rise in the Old Red Sandstone of the Slieve Bloom Mountains before passing through a band of Carboniferous shales and sandstones. The Nore, for a large part of its course, traverses limestone plains and then Old Red Sandstone for a short stretch below Thomastown. Before joining the Barrow it runs over intrusive rocks poor in silica. The upper reaches of the Barrow also runs through limestone. The middle reaches and many of the eastern tributaries, sourced in the Blackstairs Mountains, run through Leinster Granite. The southern end, like the Nore runs over intrusive rocks poor in silica. Waterford Harbour is a deep valley excavated by glacial floodwaters when the sea level was lower than today. The coast shelves quite rapidly along much of the shore. The site is a candidate SAC selected for alluvial wet woodlands and petrifying springs, priority habitats on Annex I of the E.U.

    Invertebrate survey of Eycott Hill CWT Reserve 2019 - 2020 Final Report Stephen Hewitt [email protected] 0 Invertebrate survey of Eycott Hill CWT Reserve 2019 - 2020 - Final Report October 2020 Stephen Hewitt ([email protected]) 1 Summary This survey of insects on Eycott Hill CWT Reserve was commissioned as part of the Eycott Hill Project. This is a follow up to a survey conducted in 2014. The 2014 survey concentrated on the high invertebrate conservation interest of the mire system and established that Eycott Hill supports a significant community of rare and specialist insects associated with the complex system of mires on the site. By contrast, the present survey focuses primarily on the newly created/restored habitats resulting from management work over the last 6 years. The aim is to provide some baseline data for the ongoing monitoring of the invertebrate interest of the nature reserve. Some options for further enhancement of invertebrate habitat are offered for consideration. 751 records of 343 invertebrate species identified as a result of the survey have been collated to date. In combination with the invertebrate survey of 2014, this gives a combined total of 1588 records of 459 invertebrate taxa recorded on the Eycott Hill Reserve. 20 species with a conservation designation have been recorded in the present survey, bringing the combined total of Designated species for the two surveys to 31. One RDB1 Endangered species (the bog cranefly Idioptera linnei), two RDB2 Vulnerable species (the Marsh Fritillary butterfly and the hoverfly Parhelophilus consimilis), and 14 nationally scarce species have been recorded during the present survey, including the first Cumbrian record of the upland planthopper Dicranotropis divergens.

The nominotypical family of Tephritoidea, the fruit flies (Tephritidae), includes over half of the currently known species in the superfamily. The highest diversity of tephritoids occurs in the tropics. Six of the nine extant tephritoid families have been found in Finland: no richardiid, ctenostylid or pyrgotid have been found in the country.
