2 www.berryalliance.org.au BERRY’S WAR MEMORIAL Berry’s War Memorial in Alexandra Street has an interesting and moving history. Its 2 sandstone pillars are capped by a lintel, with marble tablets on each pillar bearing the names of the fallen. It is surrounded by palm trees- a reminder of the desert campaigns in both World Wars and on display is a German Howitzer, captured by the 33rd Battalion AIF at Bouzencourt in 1918. In 1919 an avenue of trees was planted along Alexandra Street, and at the base of each tree was a plaque with the name of an ex-serviceman who had died in World War I. On Peace Day that year, the children of these servicemen stood by their memorial tree, as the parade passed by on its way to the Memorial. Some of these trees are still standing. In January 1922 State Governor, Sir Walter Davidson visited Berry for the unveiling of the Memorial. The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Advertiser reported that: ….‘The town was gaily decorated with fl ags, and several rustic arches were erected, ….the people came from …..all the neighbouring districts’. The Berry Troop of Light Horse formed a guard of honour and……’the assemblage proceeded down from the Berry Council Chambers to the Memorial Park .…., where stood the fi ne freestone monument, erected in honour of Berry’s fallen heroes’. The Cenotaph area was extensively remodelled in 1992 and the plaques that originally stood at the base of the trees were moved and fi xed to freestanding sandstone walls fl anking the Memorial, alongside new OPENING HOURS plaques commemorating those who fell in World War II. A plaque, situated on the right of the path as you Saturdays, School Holidays & approach the Memorial explains this change, listing the names of the servicemen and displaying where their Public Holidays originally dedicated trees were planted. 11.00am-2.00pm The Memorial has a very special place in Berry and the town’s ANZAC Day March and Service sees many Sundays people, of all ages, in attendance. Last year, due to Covid 19 we remembered our fallen in a different way, 11.00am-2.00pm but this year’s ANZAC Day saw the beginnings of a return to revered customs.

Knitting News

Knit with Love has started the year with a fl ourish, with an average of 21 ladies attending each Friday. If you should pass by St Luke’s on a Friday afternoon (1-3pm) you couldn’t help but notice the happy chatter and laughter that emanates from the Hall. We, of course, ardently knit away, but friendship is a large part of what we are about. Currently we are promoting several projects with patterns provided for rugs, warm clothes for any age and soft toys. Ladies are encouraged to knit at whatever level suits them. Newcomers are welcome on any Friday and are asked to bring Size 4mm (no.8) needles – we can provide wool and give help to get started. In these days of COVID plans, we are careful to maintain social distancing, have ladies register their attendance and provide hand sanitiser. In this age of inclusiveness, we have to say that men are welcome, but as yet, we have had no male take up the offer. There are a few ladies who remember their Dads or brothers knitting, particularly in wartime. As a Drop-off point for the organisation Wrap with Love, we are happy to receive rugs knitted by folk in the community and also offer to assemble squares into rugs. These will be forwarded on.

ROTARY CLUB OF BERRY

Berry Celtic Festival on Again – Sat 22 May

The Berry Celtic Festival to be held on Saturday 22 May is full steam ahead. This year highlights the Welsh Celtic nation and, subject to any Covid restrictions at the time, promises a day full of entertainment.

Jousting has been one of the real hits with Berry Celtic Festival goers in recent years and is full of excitement, and the heavily armoured noble knights are bound to once again put on a great show for the crowd.

In the background, other knights resplendent in shining armour re-live battles in hand to hand combat showing their skillful swordplay.

The Berry Celtic Festival kicks off at 9.30am with a grand parade of pipe bands marching in their distinctive kilts around the Berry Showground, together with representatives of all of the Clans, medieval knights, and Scottish Terrier dogs.

Come see the marching of the massed bands, musical items, Celtic fiddlers, highland dancing, enchanted singing, and of course, the battles of the medieval knights.

Community Grants

The Rotary Club of Berry has always provided funds to various community groups and activities. In 2019/20 this was formalised under the umbrella of a ‘Community Grants’ Scheme for projects and programs within Berry and surrounding areas.

However, due to the impacts of Covid-19 cancelling virtually all of the Club’s fundraising projects throughout 2020, we are not in a position to distribute funds this year.

We look forward with optimism that 2021 will be much better… so, stay tuned for next year.

A few months ago, South Coast Life Church partnered with a charity called ‘Food for Life’ to deliver low-cost hampers to our community. Food for Life was started by Murray and Julie Harris in the Illawarra and South Coast about two years ago. Their goal is to provide food relief to South Coast families through affordable groceries. They do this by supplying low-cost weekly hampers. People who would like a hamper can go on to the Food for Life website (foodforlife.cc) and order a hamper which will provide fi ve meals and some other staples for $55. It is one year since the Growing Illawarra Natives website was offi cially launched. The website has proven to be a wonderful resource for everyone interested in using local native plant species in their gardens. There is a blog site to follow too. www.growingillawarranatives.org showcases native plant species local to the Illawarra and Northern Shoalhaven regions and provides tips on sourcing and growing them. Hundreds of plant species are described with photos, ideas on garden design and tips on attracting local wildlife. How lucky we were with the timing of the launch. The nursery was full of plants, the rain came and the weather was perfect for planting with few distractions because we were obliged to stay at home. This year, conditions are so favourable that there is no shortage of a diversity of fruit for the local birds to gorge on. Diploglottis australis - Native tamarind, has eluded us for some years, but fruits have been abundant and collections have been made from several local sites with successful germination rates. Tim McGoldrick and the team at Elders Berry have set a new Talk to the local experts residential property sales price record at auction.

The home located in Huskisson was on the market for just 4 weeks, attracting buyers both locally and from the Sydney region.

With waterfront views, a boat ramp, boat shed and jetty the price tag comes as no surprise. Tim McGoldrick

Tim believes that now is a great time to sell 0414 157 794 as the region returns to normal and the area’s [email protected] popularity increases with Sydney buyers.
