II. RESEARCH: INTERPRETATION, TRANSMISSION AND HYBRIDITY IN LATE ANTIQUITY As a historian of Christianity, specializing in late antiquity, I examine the interrelated practices of the reception, interpretation and transmission of authoritative texts (e.g., scriptures and ) in relation to the formation of ecclesiastical identities in the sixth century. My dissertation analyzed the writings of John Maxentius and the Scythian monks, who present us with an exceptional case M.J. PEREIRA, CV|2 study for they were situated at a frontier boundary between the Latin and Greek cultures. The interpretive practices of the Scythian monks produced hybrid theological commitments. Hybridity is a conceptual term that denotes how two or more identity markers are negotiated within a person or community. In the case of the Scythian monks, they coalesced Latin and Greek writings into a monolithic tradition, which thus, created a hybrid theology (i.e., western and eastern theology). The working title of the current book proposal is Borderland Monks: Transmission and Hybridity in Late Antique Christianity. The Scythian monks were fluent in Latin. They enjoyed little access to the Greek theological writings until a major intervention from Dionysius Exiguus, an expert linguist of Latin and Greek. On behalf of the Scythian monks, Dionysius translated works of from Greek into Latin. These translations engendered the confluence of Cyril’s doctrine of divine suffering with Augustine’s doctrine of divine grace in the writings of the Scythian monks. Complex patterns of texts interpreting texts, where the church fathers interpret one another, supported their formation of layered theological commitments. These Borderland Monks offer us an unusual case of multiplicity contoured by reception, interpretation and translation.
