The GSC is a charter member of Division II and enters its 46th year as one of the premier conferences Matt Wilson (2014-Present) at any NCAA level. Nate Salant (1992-2014) Sonny Moran (1987-1992) In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to discuss athletics; when the meeting ended, a new Ralph McFillen (1984-1987) league emerged—the Mid-South Conference—started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA his- Hayden Riley (1982-1984) tory. It is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s Jim McCullough (1979-1982) & women’s cross country, men’s & women’s soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s tennis, Stan Galloway (1971-1979) men’s & women’s golf, softball and baseball) so intensely contested. GSC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack. Beginning in 1997, the league 1971-2014 (49) found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. BASEBALL (6) West Florida (2011) In 2004, the league purchased its own built-to-its-specification office space. But the crowning moment came in Delta State (2004) 2005-06, when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package which included nine football games Troy State (1986, 87) (now 11) and its men’s & women’s basketball tournament finals. Southeastern Louisiana (1977*) Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Ten- nessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter members. In 1971, the addition of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nichols Delta State (2000) North Alabama (1993, ‘94, ‘95) State increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Valdosta State (2004, ‘07, ‘12) Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern West Alabama (1971) Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NELA left for Division I, followed by Jacksonville State (1992) SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. Troy State (1984, ‘87) The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State and West MEN’S GOLF (5) Georgia (1983). In 1991, Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven Troy State (1976, ‘77, ‘84) members. An aggressive expansion under the guidance of new Commissioner Nate Salant resulted in 10 new West Florida (2001, ‘08) members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi WOMEN’S GOLF (3) University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Troy State (1984, ‘86, ‘89) Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State moved to Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS (2) schools. WOMEN’S SOCCER (2) Christian Brothers (2002), West Florida The GSC moved away from divisional play after the 2010-11 season after its six Arkansas members broke (2012) away, dropping the membership to eight. Thanks to an aggressive expansion plan, the GSC sponsored the Divi- sion II applications of Union University (TN) and Shorter University (GA), which became official members in 2014- SOFTBALL (1) 15. The next step in bolstering its membership came in 2012, backing the Division II application of Lee University Valdosta State (2012) (TN) which is on track to join the league officially in 2015-16. The league added its first-ever associate member, MEN’S TENNIS (5) Florida Tech, in football only in 2013. The Conference hopes to officially add an old friend back into the fold when Valdosta State (2006, ‘11) Mississippi College submitted its application to rejoin Division II and is on track for 2016-17 membership. www.UWAAthletics.com2016 UWA Football 2014www.UWAAthletics.com UWA Football 4 WEST ALABAMA FOOTBALL STAN WILLIAMSON Director of Athletics Stan Williamson was named Director of Athletics at the University of West Alabama in 2011 after 11 years in the same position at Campbell University. By the conclusion of his fourth year at the helm, the Tigers had captured the first- ever men’s Gulf South Conference All-Sports Trophy.

Under Williamson’s leadership, West Alabama won four GSC championships in 2014-15, two more in 2015-16 and seven total since he took over at AD.

Overseeing a coaching and professional staff of almost 70 and over 400 student-athletes, Williamson’s five-year tenure at West Alabama has been impressive. UWA has hosted conference and NCAA South Regional events while adding both men and women’s track and women’s triathlon.

Also a member of the NCAA Management Council, Williamson has spearheaded projects that have resulted in new bleachers, scoreboards and flooring in Pruitt Hall, the Tigers basketball and volleyball venue. A new outfield fence has been put in place at Tartt Field, the UWA baseball facility and a new scoreboard was erected at the UWA Softball complex.

During his tenure at UWA almost 200 student-athletes have earned either conference, regional or national academic honors. Three student-athletes have been named to the GSC Top Ten list four times. UWA student-athletes log thousands of community service hours in Sumter County and the Twin States area, over 4,500 in 2014-15 alone. Prior to serving as the AD at Campbell, the 1985 Louisiana Tech graduate served in the same capacity at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La., From 2007-2010, Campbell posted the second-best finish among the 11 from 1998-2000. Williamson guided both NSU and CU through the NCAA Atlantic Sun men’s programs while having CU athletes advance to NCAA Certification process; in addition to improving its equity in athletics standing post-season competition in cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and obtained status as an NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program. soccer, softball and men’s and women’s track and field. In three seasons at Georgia Southern, Gilliland worked with the running backs (2010), tight ends and tackles (2011) and wide receivers (2012). He took over the recruiting coordinator duties following the conclusion of the 2011 season.

With Gilliland on staff, Georgia Southern posted a 31-12 (.721) overall record, won two Southern Conference titles (2011, 2012) and made three consecutive NCAA Football Champion- ship Series (FCS) semifinal appearances during Gilliland’s time as an Eagle.

Gilliland was a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill trophy in 2003. He earned all-region recognition from the Football Ga- zette (2002). He concluded his career as the Tigers’ single- season (3,213) and career passing yards (6,689) record holder.

In 2012, he was inducted into the UWA Athletic Hall of Fame.
