With more than 170 miles behind you, the end of Offa’s Dyke National Trail must be a welcome sight. And what a great sight it is! The sea stretching out over yonder, miles and miles of golden sand and the beacon of the town where you will receive a great reception.

And it’s an award winning reception. Prestatyn is one of just twelve UK towns given official ‘Walkers are Welcome’ status, and that accolade does what it says on the tin. A large number of locals signed a petition to gain that privilege, so you can be sure they mean it.

Jon from Bedford is a keen walker and thinks this walk along King Offa’s defensive ditch is a pretty special one. “After 170 odd miles, you fear the end might be an anti-climax. Not a bit of it. It’s not often you get a view like this when you get where you’re going!”

Prestatyn may be the end of the Offa’s Dyke path for Jon, but for others it is but the start of a different long distance walking adventure. This year you will be able to head to the coast and join the Wales Coastal Path. The 870-mile path will run from the outskirts of Chester in the north to Chepstow in the south, and passes right through Prestatyn.

The Wales Coastal Path takes in Gronant dunes, but they are worth exploring in their own right. The endangered Little Tern is an annual visitor, and 170 miles of with over 100,000 other winter visitors this is a bird watching paradise. breathing space! Best keep those boots on a little longer.
