Lutterworth Wine Fair For the first time, Lutterworth will be hosting a ‘Wine Fair’ on Saturday 6th November. The event, which will be held in the splendid surroundings of Lutterworth Town Hall, will give wine lovers the opportunity to taste and buy fine wine supplied by members of ASDAW (The Association of Small Direct Wine Merchants). They will be offering a huge range of fine wines from around the world and alongside ASDAW, there will also be the opportunity of tasting wines from the two local vineyards in South Leicestershire, Welland Valley Wines and Chevelswarde Vineyard in South Kilworth. Entry tickets will be £5 per person, which can be purchased in advance or on the door and visitors will be able to taste wines which suit their taste and look to buy their wines for the Christmas period. There will even be a ‘carry to car’ service for those buying cases of wine. As well as being a ‘first’ for Lutterworth, visitors, by paying their admission, will be helping to provide funds for the St Mary’s Churchyard Project, which is providing a pleasant, green space for the people of Lutterworth. The sponsors of the Wine Fair offer their sincere thanks to Waitrose for sponsoring the event and hope to see visitors, not just from Lutterworth and the surrounding villages, but also from Market Harborough, Rugby, Hinckley and across South Leicestershire for what should be a thoroughly enjoyable event. To purchase your ticket and obtain further information call 01455 556616 or 01455 558797.

LUTTERWORTH UPDATE GEORGE STREET PUBLIC CONVENIENCES You will no doubt be aware that the George Street public conveniences were closed earlier in the year by Council meaning that Lutterworth was left without any public toilet provision. Lutterworth Town Council has since been working with Harborough District Council in an effort to discuss the possibilities of the public toilets being reopened. It is understood that Harborough District Council took the decision to close a number of public conveniences around the district in an effort to save money, however the Town Council has received a high level of complaints from local residents, retailers and visitors requesting that they be reopened. Harborough District Council has confirmed that it will not be reopening the public toilets but that Lutterworth Town Council is welcome to take on the ownership and responsibility for the George Street public conveniences and that the facility could be transferred at a £1 value. Harborough District Council and Lutterworth Town Council were due to work jointly on a project to install new public conveniences in Station Road car park but this project failed to come to fruition after project costs continued to escalate. It has therefore been agreed that the George Street public conveniences instead be refurbished with this funding that had previously been committed – 57% and 43% respectively. After careful consideration the Town Council felt that this was the right route to follow and the refurbishment project was put out to tender. Members received the tender report summary for the refurbishment of George Street public conveniences at its July meeting and discussed the annual costs associated with the maintenance of the facility. Members expressed the difficulty of obtaining the public’s view about the Town Council taking over the facility as the majority of users would in essence be visitors to the town and therefore public consultation would have its limitations in this particular context. It was agreed that public conveniences were vital to the town, particularly if Lutterworth is to be promoted as a place to visit and to encourage greater footfall in an effort to grow both sustainably and economically. It is hoped that the refurbishment work will commence during September 2010 with the new facility to reopen early November 2010. The proposed refurbishment is for two cubicles (one to include disabled access) and there will be a 20p levy in an effort to maintain the toilets to a high standard and to deter vandalism. The Town Council is still in the process of confirming the finer details of the project and the ongoing maintenance costs with Harborough District Council.

NEW - SMALL GRANTS FUND A number of ‘Your Choice, Your Voice’ community forum workshops took place across Leicestershire earlier in the year and involved local residents and community groups. There were several ideas put forward about how £20,000 could best be used in the Lutterworth area and one of these ideas was for a Small Grants Fund to be set up and administered by Lutterworth Town Council. It is pleasing to advise that this suggestion was approved by both Harborough District Council and Leicestershire County Council’s Community Engagement Team and the sum of £4,000 is due to be received by Lutterworth Town Council shortly to administer. Applications for this funding are likely to be invited within the next few weeks and all applicants will need to ensure that their applications meet one or more of the following criteria: • Supporting vulnerable and young people • Access to services and facilities • Communities interested in their local area The funding can be used to support projects up to and including 31 March 2011. A maximum of £500 can be requested by any one applicant. Please contact the Town Council Office on 01455 550225 to register your interest in readiness to receive an application form or email [email protected]

Mary Evans on behalf of Lutterworth Museum. Imperial War Museum Duxford, Cambridge. The Museum’s Whittle Collection was displayed as part of an event titled ‘Providing Science and Technology with a WOW’. This was primarily aimed at school visits to the IWM Duxford and reflected history and developments in technology. The exhibition was assembled in Lutterworth from the Museum’s Whittle collection of objects photographs and letters, then transported to Duxford for display. By the end of the exhibition period 2500 pupils and helpers had visited the Whittle display which provoked much discussion of the politics of the time. The result is the exhibition may be developed into a touring exhibition subject to funding. This submission received a Highly Commended Certificate from the Judges. Lutterworth Museum’s entry for the very prestigious ‘Best Event’, to the judging panel was as a result of a joint initiative by the British Museum and BBC for a focus on the History of the World in 100 Objects. Lutterworth Museum’s Whittle Champagne Bottle was put forward as an object of significant importance in the development of air travel and as well as being shown on the Website for the British Museum/ BBC, also resulted in a television programme for the BBC being produced in co-operation with the Museum. Filming took place at various locations in the town and the Whittle Collection at the Museum, as well as interviews with the curator Geoff Smith and Ian Whittle son of Sir Frank Whittle. The programme was aired on BBC 1 Regional TV on May 17th at 7.30pm, resulting in some wonderful publicity for the Town and its Museum. This submission received a top Award from the Judges together with a cheque for £100. The awards were collected by Mrs Sylvia Hirons, Trustee of the Museum who was accompanied by her husband Town Councillor Tony Hirons.
