^r JAMES J. HENRY ^r Director of Athletics m It might be considered somewhat ironic that James J. Henry should be rk ^j^ Director of Athletics at La Salle I ^^ ^^ College, a school that has not had a football team since 1941, for ^^ football has played a great part in ^~ "* ^^ Jim Henry's life. ^^1^^^ Before being graduated from ^k^^ Villanova in 1930, Henry received * All American honorable mention at ^^B^^' /* end, and when he came to La Salle in 1930 he was named line coach, then head coach in 1940 and 1941. In 1961 he was president of the Eastern Intercollegiate Football Officials Association, and he officiated many of the nation's top grid contests for some 25 years before retiring after the 1964 Army-Navy Game.

Football, however, is only part of the story of Jim Henry, for he is a man devoted not merely to a single sport, but to athletics and what college athletics stand for. In his 35 years at La Salle—31 of which have been spent as Athletic Director—he has given of his time and energy equally for all sports. He coached the 1931 Explorer basketball team to a 15-4 record and helped organize La Salle's crew, the first Catholic College crew in the nation. A total .of nine varsity sports bring national recognition to the college through his guidance. Mr. Henry has served on many committees including the Eligibility Committee of the Middle Atlantic Conference and Holiday Tournament Selection Committee of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference. He is also vice president of the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame and Maxwell Memorial Football Club. A Professor of Finance on La Salle's faculty, Henry received the honorary degree of doctor of law from the college in 1955. He and his wife have three adult children,- one of whom is a member of the Brothers of Christian Schools, the teaching order that conducts La Salle. ROBERT W. WALTERS Head Basketball Coach (Third Season) When Bob Walters was named

head coach of the Explorers i April 8, 1963, he became the first alumnus to assume this position since Charles McGlone's three-year term ended at the end of the 1948-49 campaign. Now in his third season, Walters celebrated his return to the school by guiding the Explorers to their

finest campaign in a decade in ' 1963-64. La Salle finished with a 16-9 record, its first Big Five title and the ECAC Quaker City Holiday Tournament Championship. Last year, the Explorers finished with a 15-8 record and appeared in the National Invitation Tourney. Walters, 39, carries an outstanding portfolio of previous basketball experience, including a brilliant career as a player, a tenure as assistant to the highly-regarded at La Salle, and a five year term as a high school coach. "One of the happiest and most enlightening years I've spent was under Ken," explains Walters, referring to the 1952-53 campaign when he was Loeffler's assistant. Because of the death of his father, Walters was forced to resign this position at the end of the season to devote full attention to his family's prosperous plumbing and air-conditioning contracting business. As a player, Walters was known for his great shooting, especially from the outside. He led the Explorers in scoring all four years of his varsity career (1943-47), finishing with a total of 1,193 points, which made him the all-time La Salle scoring leader until Larry Foust surpassed him three years later. In the 1945-46 season, Walters, a 5'10 guard, scored 367 points, then a Pennsylvania state scoring record. A two-time captain of the Explorers, Walters had the distinction of being the captain of La Salle's first post-season tournament team in 1947, when the Explorers finished runnerup in the Middle Atlantic Conference tourney. Walters was named to Philadelphia's All-City team three times and received All-State and honorable mention All-American recognition in his senior year. A native of Philadelphia, Walters attended St. Joseph's Prep. After graduating from La Salle College, he was head coach at Philadelphia's Roman Catholic High School for five seasons. Opposing coaches in the Catholic League at the time were , of Villanova, and , of St. Joseph's.

Walters is a former president of La Salle's Endowment Foundation and present co-chairman of the college's Special Gifts Committee. A resident of suburban Meadowbrook, Pa., he and his wife, Frances, have four children: Susan, 20; Robert W., Jr., 16; William, 15, and Christopher, 13. JOSEPH W. HEYER Freshman Basketball Coach (Third Season)

Joseph W. Heyer, one of the finest all-around guards in La Salle College history, celebrated his return to his alma mater in the 1963-64 season by guiding the Explorer yearlings to a fine 12-1 record and a share of the Big Five title. After graduating from La Salle in 1960, Heyer had enjoyed a highly- successful coaching tenure at Phila delphia's Cardinal Dougherty High He guided the Cardinals to the final game of the Catholic League play offs all three years of his coaching reign and finished with an overal won-lost record of 54-20. Heyer also coached baseball and taught history and gym at Cardinal Dougherty High. He is still on the faculty of that school and is nearing completion of work towards a Master's degree in Education at Temple University. A 27-year-old native of Philadelphia, Heyer scored a total of 928 points during his varsity career at La Salle from 1957 to 1960. During the 1958-59 campaign, he became only the fourth junior in La Salle history to go over the 400 mark in single-season scoring, finishing with 402. Heyer was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference first team in his junior year, and Philadelphia's All Big Five team the following campaign.

By Coach Bob Walters

With only two starters returning, it looks like La Salle is going to have a tough time coming close to last year's 15-8 record which included an appearance in the National Invitation Tourney.

One of our main problems, of course, is another rugged schedule- one that would be a challenge for the best team in the country. Road games are slated against the likes of Western Kentucky, Utah State, Seattle, Creighton, Miami (Fla.), Georgetown, Duquesne and Seton Hall. Home opponents include nationally-ranked Brigham Young in the Quaker City Tourney, as well as the traditional Big Five powers and such teams as Syracuse and Louisville.

Guard Hubie Marshall, the team's second leading scorer last year, and forward George Paull, a solid all-around performer, are the only

returning starters. I expect both to be even better after good sophomore campaigns, but overall, our scoring and rebounding strength should be considerably weaker than last year.

Marshall must assume the gaping playmaking hole left by the gradua- tion of Curt Fromal, who deserved every inch of his "Little" All American recognition last year. Not only was he the team's leading scorer, but Curt's ball-handling and passfng enabled La Salle to engineer the best fast break attack of any team in the school's history.

Paull, of course, will have to carry most of the scoring and rebounding burden in the frontcourt now that 67 George Sutor and 6'5 Al Tezsla are gone. The key to La Salle's success may be 6'6 sophomore Bill Ring, the tallest player on the varsity, who is expected to take Sutor's place. Bill averaged 20 points and almost 15 rebounds a game as a freshman and has the potential to be a good college .

A pair of juniors with limited experience but promising ability, Chuck Storm and Eddie Burke, are the top candidates for the other backcourt slot. Storm is only 6'2, but he can play either guard or forward and is one of the best around defensively. Burke has shown good shooting potential in limited appearances but he had a serious operation during the summer and may be late getting in top playing condition.

If Burke works out at guard, Storm will play in the frontcourt. Otherwise the forward slot looks like a three way battle between 6'5 Jerry Marano, the only senior on the club, and a pair of 6'3 transfer students Dave Ervin (Salem, W. Va., College) and Aaron McKenna (Wharton Jr. College, Texas). Marano has the edge here. He did a good job, especially in rebounding and defense, as a reserve last year. If Jerry could pick up his scoring, he'd be an outstanding collegiate forward.

Another sophomore who may help up front is 6'4 Dave Bednarik, who surprised quite a few people with his clutch play for the frosh last season. Rounding out the squad are guards Bill Magarity, who played occasionally last year, and newcomers Dan Carr and Jim Graham.

With newcomers, or veterans with limited experience, supplying 60% of our firepower this year, it might be a while before the team matures. Look for the Explorers to pull a few surprises before the season ends, however. MEET THE EXPLORERS

(*) Returning Lettermen

David M. Bednarik

Sophomore 19 6'4 195 Bethlehem, Pa.

Dave is a good frontcourt reserve pros- w pect who led Explorer yearlings in points scored (209—19.0 ppg.), rebounds (130— Jk 11.8 rpg.), percentage (80 for ^^\^ *5J 158—50.6%) and accuracy (40 ^^^ ^S~ for 69— 71°o). His best game was a 35 ^^ 1^ point effort against Penn's yearlings when ^k f^^ he hit 10 of 18 shots from the floor and ^^l^^A 15 straight from the foul line. A strong shooter, ^^^^^^^^^^^^^*> rebounder and better-than-average Dave's only drawback is a lack of speed.

Unlike his brother, Chuck, former Penn All American and star center- linebacker with the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL, Dave never concen- trated much in football although he played a little fullback as a High School sophomore. As a senior, he captained Bethlehem High's basket- ball team and made "All Eastern Pennsylvania." Dave has three brothers and two sisters. He's majoring in Liberal Arts.

Gerald A. (Jerry) Marano

Senior 21 6'5 205 Lafayette Hill, Pa.

Jerry was last year's most pleasant sur- prise and, consequently, the subject of one of the most unusual success stories in collegiate basketball. Cut once as a sopho- more, he was given another chance and made the squad on sheer hustle. Then, in less than two seasons, he battled his way from 12th man to the top frontline reserve slot, to a probable starting role this sea- son. He impressed considerably against

Syracuse in last year's Holiday Festival in Madison Square Garden when he came off the bench to do a good job under the boards when the starters ran into foul trouble. His improve- ment in rebounding and defense has been absolutely amazing since his freshman year when he averaged only five points and seven rebounds a game. If he could improve his shooting touch (career high is seven points vs. Delaware last year) and 1.9 ppg. scoring average, much of La Salle's frontcourt problem could be alleviated. Jerry, another grad- uate of La Salle High, is the only senior on the squad. He has one sister.

An outstanding candidate for Academic All American honors, he is a Dean's List student majoring in Chemistry.

He played three years of varsity ball at Father Judge High and was president of the Student Council his senior year. Dan has two younger sisters and is majoring in Marketing.

James A. Graham Junior 20 6'2 194 Philadelphia

Jim just missed making the varsity last year, but showed enough improvement to clinch a frontcourt reserve slot this season. He averaged 4.0 ppg. for the 1963-64 freshman team with his scoring high of 10 coming against St. Joseph's and rebounding high of 10 against Temple. He's improved his shooting considerably since then. Jim was a forward for three years at Father

Judge High. He has one sister and is major- ing in Industrial Management.

Charles L. (Chuck) Storm Junior 20 67 185 Philadelphia

Chuck is expected to start in the back- court this year after appearing in 17 varsity games before going on academic probation

' ^~- as a sophomore. Although he averaged only &¥» 2.6 ppg., Chuck has improved his outside ^0? shooting considerably and has the potential v to be a solid performer. He can play any- h where, rebounds well for his size and *¥ / plays perhaps the toughest defense in town. ' / His career high is 10 against Gettysburg, / I but if he comes anywhere close to his 14 ppg. scoring average as a freshman, La Salle's chances would be strengthened immeasurably. Chuck lettered for three years at Roman

Catholic High where he made the Scholastic All Catholic-All American squad his senior year. He also excelled in baseball (shortstop) at Roman.

He has three sisters and one brother and is majoring in Marketing.

This peppery, ball-control specialist ap- bft *=^ peared in 11 varsity games last year, made « V 10 of 17 shots from the floor (58.8%) and all nine attempts from the charity stripe for 29 points. Hence, he will probably be one of the top backcourt reserves. A broken leg in the first week of practice hampered Bill's progress as a 1963-64 freshman, but he came back to score 24 to spark the big upset over St. Joseph's highly-regarded yearlings. His varsity high is eight points against Delaware last year. Magarity's father, Bill, played football for La Salle and his cousin, Dan McDyre, captained the Explorers' track team and won IC4A and Penn Relays' javelin titles in 1963. Bill lettered in football (quarterback) and basketball at La Salle High, co-captained the court squad and made honorable mention All Catholic his senior year. He has five brothers and two sisters, and is majoring in Marketing.

'Hubert (Hubie) Marshall

Junior 21 6'0 170 Coatesville, Pa.

Hubie should emerge as one of the na- tion's outstanding playmakers this year after finishing as team's second leading

scorer as a sophomore (15.3 ppg.). Playing alongside the great Curt Fromal, he went over the 20 point mark seven times, led the team in scoring nine games and had a career high of 31 against Georgetown on a brilliant 14 for 23 shooting night. He was the top foul shooter on the team (84.8%) and ranked third in the nation in that category at mid-season. Hubie also was responsible for La Salle's most dramatic win in years when he hit on a 35 foot desperation jumper at the buzzer to send the Niagara game into overtime. Against Syracuse in Madison Square Garden he kept the Explorers in the game with 16 of his team's 24 points in the first half. He ended the game with 28, including seven overtime points to clinch the triumph. Hubie also had 18 points in second half to lead Explorer comeback against Temple in Garden Festival consolation and 20 in second half at Louisville. Although he tends to run into "cold" spells at times, Hubie has a devastating jump shot and throws lightning-quick passes. An All State star for two years at Coatesville High, Hubie set a host of scholastic and Ches-Mont League records including a career total of 1,231 points and a single game high of 50 in final home game against Pottstown. Hubie is the only married player on the squad. A Business major at La Salle, he has four brothers and one sister. Younger brother, Curt, is playing in the backcourt for the Explorer yearlings.

Exceptional shooting ability from the outside could carry this set shot artist into starting backcourt position. However, he missed the first two weeks of practice recovering from a serious operation during the summer. Eddie picked up valuable play-

making experience in 13 varsity appear- ances last year and indicated that he could

score consistently if given a regular oppor- tunity. He scored nine points against Dela-

ware for a career high, but had six in the final minutes against Villanova and five against Creighton. Eddie has a tremendous "basketball mind," according to coach Bob Walters and improved his ball-handling considerably last year. He captained St. Joseph's High's 1962-63 varsity under coach John (Jocko) Collins, presently a member of La Salle's basketball staff, and regards winning the previous year's Catholic League basketball his greatest thrill in sports. He has three brothers and one sister. A French-Education major who plans teaching as a career.

*George S. Paull Junior 20 6'4 207 Philadelphia

One of the nation's better sophomore forwards last year, George should become one of the Ail-Time La Salle greats before he graduates. He was the team's fourth leading scorer (12 ppg.) but led the squad in field goal percentage (50.2%) and always seemed to be making the clutch play- either offensively, defensively or under the boards. His career high is 23 scored against Lafayette. Against Gettysburg, he hit nine of ten field goal attempts. Despite his fine play, George's feats often go unnoticed because he is just not a spectacular-type performer. He had 16 crucial points against Miami.

Penn and St. Joseph's for example, but few people noticed because a teammate overshadowed him. Moreover, Paull played the major part of the campaign in obvious pain from an ailment known as "Taylor's Bunionette" which was corrected by a post-season operation on the little toe of his left foot. George was an All Catholic performer at

Cardinal Dougherty High School in both basketball and baseball and has already clinched a spot on the Explorer baseball varsity at first base.

His high school coach in both sports was present Explorer frosh mentor

Joe Heyer. George has two brothers and a sister, and is majoring in History.

Aaron is slated for frontcourt reserve duty after spending a year at Wharton County (Texas) Junior College. He starred

for three years at St. Augustine's High (New Orleans) where he made All City and Dis-

trict in 1963 and led his team to a spot

in the National Catholic Scholastic Tourney,

in Washington, D.C. Aaron also competed in track at Wharton. He has one brother and

is majoring in General Business.

William E. (Bill) Ring ^0^ Sophomore 19 6'6 190 Washington, D.C.

Much of La Salle's progress this year

It"*- ^* < rests on the slender shoulders of this 4 sophomore slated to take over George Sutor's center slot. According to most

observers, Ring has all the tools necessary

to make a good collegiate pivotman. He is quick, has good reflexes, can and score as his freshman figures (21 ppg. and 14.7 rebounds a game) indicated in nine appearances before being declared aca- demically ineligible. His only problem might be a lack of stamina, but he has been working on a weight- building program and should be able to go 40 minutes. His best fresh- man efforts were 28 points in his debut against Albright and 19 rebounds against Temple. He played scholastic basketball at St. John's High,

making All Catholic and honorable mention All Metro, his senior year.

Bill has three sisters and is majoring in General Business.

David A. (Lefty) Ervin

Sophomore 20 6'3 195 Roslyn, Pa.

Dave could be this year's "sleeper." He didn't compete last year after transferring from Salem (W. Va.) College where he « ^ -*-* played one year of basketball and baseball, but has shown enough hustle and rebound- A i ing ability in practice to be considered a strong candidate for a starting frontcourt slot. He's a tough "battler" under the boards in the Harry Carpenter -Al Tezsla mold. Dave played at Abington High where he made the Suburban I All Star team and was co-captain of his team in senior year. He's already clinched a righthanded pitching spot on La Salle's 1966 baseball varsity. Dave has two older sisters and is majoring in General Business.

40 THE LA SALLE 1 STORY La Salle College celebrated its Centennial Year in 1963 and now is well into its second century of service to higher education and the community of Philadelphia. The College was founded March 20, 1863 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools and derives its name from the founder of the Christian Brothers, St. John Baptist de La Salle. By 1929, having outgrown three previous locations in Philadelphia, the campus was moved to its present 30 acre site at 20th st. and Olney ave., in the East Germantown section of the city. The Evening Division was inaugurated in 1946 in response to the needs of industry throughout the metropolitan area. Since 1945, La Salle has experienced the most dramatic period of expansion in its history. Present enrollment in both Day and Evening Divisions is over 6,000 students as compared to the 1940 enrollment of about 400. In the last 16 years, twelve new buildings have been added to the campus. Both the Day and Evening Divisions offer degree pro- grams in Arts and Sciences and Business Administration. Seven modern residence halls accommodate over 600 out of town students. A $2 million, three story College Union Building, completed in 1959, includes a Little Theatre as well as dining halls, assembly rooms, ballroom and other student facilities. The $2.5 million Science Center, which houses modern lecture rooms and laboratory facilities for study and research in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Psy- chology opened in 1960. New dormitories to accommodate 200 students are now under construction. On the drawing boards are an athletic activities building and a new classroom building. Additional educational areas are located on a 52 acre campus in Elkins Park and on an 80 acre area in Springfield Township. The Army Artillery ROTC program was initiated in 1950 and now numbers more than 1500 cadets.
