Game #13 April 20 • Multi-Sport Field • Washington, D.C. #5 Syracuse 9 Georgetown 8

Georgetown scored a pair of late goals, but No. 5 Syracuse stifled the charge and held on for a 9-8 win against the Hoyas Saturday, April 20 in front of 2,736 fans at Multi-Sport Field. The win closed the book on a grueling stretch of five games in two weeks for the Orange. Syracuse went 4-1 over that period, but each game went down to the wire and was decided by a single tally. Syracuse held a comfortable 9-6 lead late in the fourth quarter against the Hoyas until Dan McKinney and Charles McComick tallied consecutive goals in the span of 48 seconds to close the gap to one with 1:13 remaining in regulation. After a Syracuse timeout, the Hoyas won the ensuing faceoff and had a brief 6-on-5 advantage after Steve Ianzito broke his stick and had to leave the field. Georgetown could not take advantage of the opportunity though as McKinney threw the ball away with 20 seconds left. SU cleared successfully and ran out the final 10 seconds to defeat the Hoyas for the sixth time in the last seven years. Junior Derek Maltz and senior JoJo Marasco led the Orange with three points each. Maltz scored two goals and was credited with one assist, while Marasco finished with one goal and two assists. Senior Luke Cometti added two goals in the victory. After falling behind 3-1, the Orange used a 3-0 run capped by a Maltz extra- man goal, to claim a 4-3 advantage 40 seconds into the second quarter. The Hoyas notched the only other two goals of the period to go back in front, 5-4, at the break. In the third quarter, the Orange took control, outscoring the Hoyas 4-1 in the frame. Maltz, Cometti, sophomore Kevin Rice and redshirt sophomore Hakeem Lecky all scored for the Orange in the period. Lecky’s unassisted goal with 1:31 left in the quarter pushed the SU margin to 8-6. Cometti tallied his second goal of the day on a jump shot from nine yards out early in the fourth to give the visitors their largest lead at 9-6. That’s how the score remained until Georgetown’s two late goals led to a tense final minute that Syracuse ultimately survived.
