STAYBy Marsha Gittens INDOORS! EXCEPT for essential workers and the criti- cal care workers, Barbadians are being told to stay off the roads island-wide today (Saturday) dur- ing the passage of Tropical Storm Gonzalo. Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley stated this while also urging persons to stay out of the seas and for small craft to come into safe harbour. She spoke to the country on Friday while at Murphy’s Pasture in The City. There, with other government minis- ters and ministry officials, she assessed drainage and flooding issues in the area. At the time of her re- marks, Barbados had been downgraded from a Hurricane Watch to Tropical Storm Warning. “My advice to all Barbadians is that we must stay vigilant and that we must be prepared. Effectively, those who should be on the road to- morrow, unless the Tropical Storm Warning is lifted, should only be the essential workers and the critical care workers in the Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley and Attorney General, Dale Marshall reviewing official documents with Senior Technical Officer, country and to that extent Jason Bowen, Senior Technical Officer, Charles Yearwood and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Water SAFE on Page 2 Resources, Mark Cummins while at Murphy Pasture in the City. Genetic impact of colonial-era slave trade revealed in DNA study A MAJOR DNA study has shed new light on the fate of millions of Africans who were traded as slaves to the Americas between the 16th and 19th centuries. More than 50 000 people took part in the study, which was able to identify more details of the “genetic impact” the trade has had on present-day populations in the Americas. It lays bare the consequences of rape, maltreatment, disease and racism. More than 12.5m Africans were traded between 1515 and the mid-19th Century. Some two million of the enslaved men, women and children died en route to the Americas. The DNA study was led by consumer genetics company 23andMe and included 30 000 people of African ancestry on both sides of the Atlantic. The findings were published in the American Journal of Human Genetics. Steven Micheletti, a population geneticist at 23andMe told AFP news agency that the aim was to compare the genetic results with the manifests of slave ships “to see how they agreed and how they disagree”. While much of their findings agreed with historical documentation about where people were taken from in Africa and where they were enslaved in the Americas, “in some cases, we see that they disagree, quite strikingly”, he added. The 3 682 fires detected in the region so far this year are the highest number since records began in 1998. In the same period in 2018 there were 277 in the area in total. Members of environmental network the Pantanal Observatory called the fires “a social danger since, in addition to the economic damage and the loss of biodiversity, fires cause respiratory problems, eye irritation and allergies,” according to Brazilian newspaper O Globo. The organisation said that in two days, around 7 000 hectares were burnt as the result of both “criminal activity” and “climactic factors”. Wildfires often occur in the dry season in Brazil, but they are also deliberately started in efforts to illegally deforest land for cattle ranching. In the Bolivian Pantanal, fighting the fires has been complicated by the coronavirus pandemic which limits the number of people who can safely tackle the blazes, Carlos Pinto of the organisation Friends of Nature Foundation explained. Saturday July 25, 2020 Rogers: Merger a positive step PRIME Minister Mia Amor Mottley’s recent move of combining Energy, Small Business and Entre- preneurship into one Ministry is receiv- ing praise. Vice President of the Barbados Renewable Energy Association (BREA) Aidan Rogers called the decision “a pos- itive paradigm shift”, insisting it will help streamline various processes within the industry and contribute sig- nificantly to government’s alternative energy goals for 2030 and beyond. Speaking on yesterday’s edition of Down to Brass Tacks, he pointed out several challenges encountered by re- newable energy business owners due to the previous handling of various as- pects of the sector by separate min- istries. “What this merger has effectively done is to streamline what has been one of the more challenging aspects of the supervision – both technical in terms of licensing and the regulations in terms of the remit of the Fair Trading Commission (FTC) over the emerging alternative energy sector.
