AAU Hockey has developed a new online program for coaches, parents, and athletes aimed Published bi-monthly for the to increase awareness regarding sport-specific safety issues. The online portal, The Athletic benefit and interest of AAU Ice Safety and Awareness Portal, will feature training courses, health and safety resource Hockey participants. guides, and AAU-specific policies and protocols for hockey. Starting in March of 2016, AAU Hockey will be piloting this program with a course for parents and coaches: Concussion Awareness and Responsibilities. The course highlights important information related to concussions and provides information about the identification, minimization, and management of concussions. The pilot program will include access to Reference Guides on Concussion Signs and Symptoms as well as pertinent AAU policies.

Access to the portal will be offered free of charge to the first 2,000 members by our new partner, CFM Partners. CFM is a Governance, Risk, and Compliance company that works with organizations committed to implementing proactive and -looking education and information programs. CFM Partners recently launched a state-of-the art solution, The Athletic Compliance Portal for NCAA schools. The portal, designed to improve communication and education related to health and safety issues, includes education and training materials similar to those in our pilot program. AAU National Hockey Chair, Keith Noll recently stated, “Division 1 schools, including the University of Notre Dame, the University of Virginia, and the College of the Holy Cross, have implemented the training courses and are experiencing excellent results”. AAU Hockey hope’s to do the same.

The Portal will provide the platform to consolidate existing AAU content (videos, PowerPoint presentations, rules and regulations, etc.) as well as content provided by or through CFM, Contents such as Concussion Training for young athletes. (Please note that while CFM currently North American Select 2 develops content for adult audiences, we anticipate engaging the appropriate subject matter 8U Championships 5 experts, learning and design specialists, and graphic artists to accommodate the needs of the younger audience.) 8U Mixed Champions 6 10U Championships 7

Western States Hockey League

The Western States Hockey League (WSHL) is down to the final four in the 2016 Thorne Cup Playoffs. This year representing the league in the two Conference Finals are the Oklahoma City Blazers & the Colorado Jr. Eagles fighting for the Plains Conference, and the Idaho Jr. Steelheads face the Long Beach Bombers for the Pacific. With competition never being higher than it is now, these teams have truly earned the right to play for the highest honor in the league.

Well before the postseason actually began, several of the teams were already in playoff-mode with races for spots in the tournament, and seeding for possible bye- weeks. However, with two weeks left in the season, most of the teams already knew their fate and if they’d be playing in mid-March.

One of the many plus-sides to the setup of the postseason is how the structure works. The top two seeds in each division earn the right to take the first weekend off, and while the third faced the sixth and the fourth played the fifth. It gave a sizable reward to those that led their divisions, and gave the lower seeds more manageable opponents.

Although there are still two rounds to go, the playoffs have not been without their big headlines already. Fresno Monsters stalwart, Mike Nolan, played in the final games of his illustrious junior career in front of a warm and inviting home crowd, Ogden Mustangs , Schuyler Seyfert, not only had his jersey retired after a frightening injury, but also made a comeback for the playoffs to score a game-winning- in overtime, and after a back-and-forth weekend, the Oklahoma City Blazers somehow fought off the high-powered offense of the Springfield Express. This particular postseason has been full of all the drama you look for in springtime hockey, and it is far from over. AAU Ice Hockey Page 3 April 1, 2016 Volume 3, Issue 5

Western States Hockey League

Despite all of high-paced action of the postseason, there hasn’t been any major upsets, and all four teams fighting to make it into the Thorne Cup Finals had a first round bye thanks to their regular season successes. This just proves why that extra rest is so important at the end of a grueling season, and why teams fight so hard for those top seeds - it’s not enough to just make it to the dance.

Close games have been a huge theme with several teams advancing during the extra frame or by the skin of their teeth in regulation. It was a tight series between Idaho and Missoula that went down to the wire in The Gem State, Long Beach took down Valencia in just two games but never had a comfortable lead, and both the Colorado/Ogden and Springfield/Oklahoma series saw overtime as a major factor. The race for the Thorne Cup has never been hotter as is the quality of WSHL hockey.

The playoffs continue April 1-3 with the Conference Finals (best of 3) before two teams fight it out for the championship (best of 5) April 8-9 and 15-17, and you can follow along on FastHockey.com

Even though the race for the Thorne Cup is in full-swing, the WSHL is already looking ahead to the 2016-17 season. New teams are expected to join the 29 already in operation after the annual meetings during the offseason. National tryouts and even overseas recruiting are not far off from now. In fact, some teams already have camps scheduled for Norway, Russia, Slovakia, and Sweden. 27th Annual Let’s Play Hockey Consumers Expo in St. Paul, MN.

The 27th annual Let’s Play Hockey Expo attracted massive crowds to the St. Paul RiverCentre on March 4-5, 2016. Between 40-50,000 fans got up close and personal with gear at over 350 booths from the top hockey manufacturers, including CCM and STX. Many booths featured cutting-edge product demonstrations, interactive games, giveaways, hourly door prize drawings and celebrity appearances. In addition, a hockey memorabilia and sports card show took place in the Kellogg Lobby during the Expo. Attendees also checked out the latest in baseball and softball gear at the Let’s Play Baseball/Softball Expo. Golf was also back at the Expo, with 2nd Swing and Minnesota Section PGA offering free lessons, putting contests and the Ryder Cup trophy.

The AAU Hockey Committee handed out thousands of T-Shirts and information on all 40+ sports programs within the AAU. AAU President, Dr. Roger Goudy, AAU National Hockey and Football Chair, Keith Noll, Minnesota AAU Treasurer, Dave Preller, WSHL President, Ron White and National Collegiate Prospects League Director, Bob Black, along with other AAU Staff members greeted the masses who stopped by the AAU Display area on March 4th and 5th while attending the Expo at the RiverCentre in St. Paul. AAU Ice Hockey Page 8 April 1, 2016 Volume 3, Issue 5

The inaugural Let’s Play Hockey Consumer’s Expo was held on March 10- 11, 1990 at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium. There were 73 companies occupying 92 booth spaces. Ten of the original companies exhibiting the first year in 1990, also displayed at the recently completed 27th Annual Let’s Play Hockey Consumers Expo. This year’s show had over 200 companies occupying over 350 booth spaces. Hats off to all of the exhibitors and attendees who help make this the greatest consumer hockey trade show in the world.

The 2017 Let’s Play Hockey Consumer Expo will be held on March 10-11, at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, MN. AAU Ice Hockey Page 9 April 1, 2016 Volume 3, Issue 5

MAYHL (Michigan) State Championships Round Up 7U Blue '08 Brighton Ice 3, Team Toledo 3. Team Toledo took a 1-0 lead in the first period on Luke Anders' goal and the Ice struck twice in the second period on a pair of scores from Luke Pietila. Cameron Ritz tied it again late in the third period for Toledo, but with just 2:05 to play Derek Janis pumped in the title winner.

8U Michigan Flying Finns 4, Grosse Ile Devils 3 It would take overtime to settle the championship winner which saw the Devils get the jump in the first period on a pair of goals from Ryder Novock, both assisted by Tony Venturini. Easton Tinley built the Grosse Ile lead to 3-0 in the second, but the Finns finally began flying in the third period with an odd strategy. After Jacob Daavettila's power play goal made it 3-1, the Finns kept getting into penalty problems which were no problem at all for Drew L'Esperance, who scored a natural hat trick in short handed goals, two in the third period, and the last in overtime. AAU Ice Hockey Page 10 April 1, 2016 Volume 3, Issue 5

MAYHL (Michigan) State Championships Round-Up 8U St. Clair '07 Team Toledo 3, '07 Tri City Jr. Icehawks 2. In spite of two goals by Chase Pettipiece in the first period for the Icehawks, Team Toledo was able to stop Tri City the rest of the way and get goals from Braylon Czarnik, Jaxon Duncan and Brody Bergman in the second period. Both teams put on the defensive clamps in the final stanza, giving Toledo the title.

8U Tier 1 Sylvania North Stars '07 Select 3, '07 Bloomfield Blades 1 Holden Brighty's first period goal and Parker Nyitray's goal in the second built up a 2-0 lead for Sylvania, but Jack Josifovski increased the suspense with an early third period goal for the Blades who pulled their at the end in attempt to force a 2-2 tie and go into overtime. Luke Schoen, though, ended it with an open net goal, clinching the championship with 1:09 to play. AAU Ice Hockey Page 11 April 1, 2016 Volume 3, Issue 5

MAYHL (Michigan) State Championships Round-Up 7U Gold Plymouth Kings 3, '08 Michigan Stars 2. The North Stars were first on the scoreboard when Myles Schlack scored with 38 seconds to play in the first period. They increased their lead to two goals when Schlack set up Havi Sarcevich in the second period. But then the Kings mounted their comeback, with a late second period goal by Jack Wheaton and tallies in the third period by Mark Schaefer, both unassisted and the final goal coming with 50 seconds to play.

8U Mixed Huron MC Eagles 4, Allen Park Wild 0 After splitting the first two games of a best of three series, (Allen Park winning, 8-7, and the Eagles winning 6-3), the Eagles dominated the scoreboard and threw up a shutout or the championship. Jack Arnold scored two of the goals and solos were added by Layton Naeyaert and Jacob Drouin. AAU Ice Hockey Page 12 April 1, 2016 Volume 3, Issue 5

MAYHL (Michigan) State Championships Round-Up 7U Tier 1 Downriver Warriors 4, Detroit Nordiques 2 In a three game series the Nordiques opened with a 4-2 victory and the Warriors bounced back with a 3-0 shutout in the second game. The finale was played at Lincoln Park Arena where the Warriors Jacob Monks opened the scoring in the first period. Grandon Echols padded the lead to two goals in the second period and early in the third Ethan Garden's power play goal made it 3-0. The Nordiques came back with a pair of goals from Jayden Jones, but Garden's second goal was the insurance goal that sealed the win.

8U Mixed Michigan Allen Park Wolves 5, Trenton Predators 1 The Wolves and the Predators played a best of three series for the championship with Trenton opening the series on a 2-0 win and the Wolves bouncing back in the second game, 3-2, to force a third and deciding game. Davion Long scored a hat trick for the Wolves while Nathan Sparks and Felix Snead added solo goals. Trenton's Mason Eshelman scored for the Predators. North American Championships Edition

March of 2016 was an awesome month for AAU Ice Hockey. In the words of one un-named presidential candidate, it’s been “Huge”. Of course, front and center in March were the North American Championships. And within this issue of the newsletter we’ll showcase our new AAU Champions at 7U through 12U. Well done and congratulations to all of our competitors on their hard work. In addition, while kicking off the 7U and 8U Championships in Minnesota, AAU Ice Hockey hosted a national conference, which announced some rather dramatic changes for the 2016-2016 season. These changes involve the creation of the new integrated league-based format for our national-bound ice hockey programs. Known as the North American Select Hockey (NASH), the new program is believed to be a great leap forward for AAU Ice Hockey. And this issue will attempt to detail the format of NASH and what it will mean for AAU Ice Hockey and our fellow members going forward. We’d also like to thank Dr. Roger Goudy (AAU National President) for attending our many Ice Hockey events in Minnesota.

Dr Goudy was introduced by Keith Noll (AAU Hockey, National Chair), during the national conference, where he welcomed the attendees. He also watched many of the 7U and 8U North American Championship games and attend the Let’s Play Hockey Expo. Of course, a “Huge” weekend.

AAU Ice Hockey Page 14 April 1, 2016 Volume 3, Issue 5

North American Select Hockey (NASH—Continued) Dateline: March 3, 2016 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Well, if you happen to like youth hockey then the weekend of March 3rd through 6th was a great time to be in the Twin Cities area. With the Minnesota State High School Boys Hockey Tournament taking place at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN as well as the Let’s Play Hockey Consumer Expo taking place right next door at the attached RiverCentre, anyone could have enjoyed a full weekend of hockey. Yet for hundreds of AAU members, the most important events of the weekend were the AAU 7U and 8U North American Championships being hosted just up the road at the Minnesota Made Ice Hockey Center in Edina, Minnesota. However, yet another event was also held in the area. On March 3rd an AAU Ice Hockey conference was held (also in St. Paul at the RiverCentre) where Keith Noll (AAU Hockey, National Chair) introduced a remarkable new course for the AAU national youth ice hockey program and their leagues. That new course is our North American Select Hockey (NASH).

WHAT IS NASH? Well in short, North American Select Hockey (NASH) is the next generation or evolution of our AAU Ice Hockey national program and is intended to provide each of our individual members with the ability to join and participate within AAU Ice Hockey in a far easier and less confusing manner. While at the same time allowing for far easier and less confusing management of our programs. These important program improvements include: 1. REGISTRATION: The keystone feature of North American Select Hockey (NASH) will be our Online Registration process. This rSportz administered process will serve as our base for integrating all other operations, which will be vastly improve, streamline and simplify operations. a. And therefore, this process will be mandatory for all participants to register through this new system if they wish to become eligible for any AAU Ice Hockey program National Championship and/or North American Championship or wish to enjoy other benefits provided through NASH. Of course, this includes Individual Members (Players, Managers, Coaches and Referees), as well as Teams and their Leagues).  The improved Ice Hockey registration process will be moved onto the aauice.rsportz.com website (instead of the old aausports.org).  The cost for each Individual Membership (including all Youth-Players, Managers, Coaches, Directors and Referees) shall be standardize to $20 (US residents) Canadians T/B/A. This new single fee will provide an Extended Benefits membership within the AAU (including for the purposes of participating within other AAU sports) as well as membership within North American Select Hockey (NASH).  This new Ice Hockey registration process will allow AAU Ice Hockey and NASH to create a

- story continued on the following page - AAU Ice Hockey Page 15 April 1, 2016 Volume 3, Issue 5

North American Select Hockey (NASH) - continued vastly improved database and communication system.  In addition, this will allow our National, State and League directors to more easily contact their Individual Members or Groups separately (including participating Players, Managers, Coaches and Referees), as well as Teams and their Leagues), while also protecting their privacy from others. b. A primary reason being that the AAU national registration process was designed in order to accommodate a vast number of sports having vastly different needs, which has led to a complicated and often confusing process. The new system will simplify the entire process for our Ice Hockey members. 2. ROSTERING: Creating new rostering program for all leagues.

Benefits of the NASH Membership will include:  Eligibility for participation within the AAU North American Championships.  AAU National Championship Rings for participants of North American Championship winning teams.  Free National Championship T-Shirt for all participants of the AAU North American Championships.  Verification of the automatic AAU Background Screening for all participating Coaches, Managers & .  Verification of the CDC Heads-Up youth sports concussion awareness certifications for all participating Coaches (which is mandatory by law within most States).  Verification of the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) Double-Goal Coaching certifications for all participating Coaches.  CFM Athletic Safety and Awareness (as addressed above).  Coverage within the AAU Ice Hockey national newsletter (see the March 2016 newsletter. (National Committee editor).

AAU Ice Hockey Page 16 April 1, 2016 Volume 3, Issue 5

North American Select Hockey (NASH) - continued

The prior system has often led to confusion for our Ice Hockey participants, for Members, Leagues and even f

With our exceptional growth during the past 5 years (from only a few thousand to well over 30,000 ice hockey members), and with the development of a National Championship in 2014 and its expansion into the North American League Championships. So with a great deal of input from Members and our League Operators, Keith Noll and the national committee have been developing ideas of how to better manage our AAU Ice Hockey programs at the National, District and League level, without disturbing our grass-roots nature. In order to help accomplish this, AAU Hockey has teamed up with RSportz (the operator of our aauice.rsportz.com national level website).
