SummeR 2017 eDITION

For National Police Week the Hills & Dales Day Habilitation program staff and clients invited our local police and sheriff departments to come visit a "Thank You Open House". Around 10 officers, including Officers Dane Cox and Kurt Rosenthal pictured above with Sarah, Brook, Hannah, and Stacy (shaking hands) stopped in throughout the day for some baked goodies and to receive some special recognition for everything they do! A group of clients and staff also went out and hand delivered treats and a thank you card to various officers and locations throughout Dubuque.

Lt. Scott Baxter later that day shared, “thanks for inviting us and for all the goodies too! We had a great time interacting with both clients and staff!” Inside This Issue FROm THe CeO ...... 2 FROm THe BOARD OF DIReCTORS ...... 3 COmmuNITY SuppORT ...... 4 ReCOgNITION –– From Wishes to Reality ...... 5-8 HILLS & DALeS HAppeNINgS ...... 9-11 From the Chief Executive Officer We have reached a milestone in the most signifi - cant transition of medicaid services in Hills & Dales history. Just over a year ago, the medicaid system was transitioned to private insurance companies, to say that this has been easy for our organization and the persons we support is a true understatement. The year has been challenging and continuous change has been upon us from the very first day. We hope for a period of stabiliza - tion and evaluation time from the State’s ongoing seesaw of change, so that it can be determined if marilyn Althoff the Iowans who require our type of service and CeO support can receive the best care in this system. Beyond managed Care however, as we always do at Hills & Dales, we look for the opportunities that present themselves. We are very excited about the new Telemedicine option that is occurring at our Residential Center. We have been in the planning phases of this service through a partnership with the Hospitals and Clinics for some time and the services have now begun. This opportunity reduces time and multiple trips to Iowa City for residents and staff for certain types of appointments. We are also excited about the tremendous growth we have had in our Autism HD program. We hope to have several new therapists on board soon to address all that is needed. Also, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA ) therapy will soon be available to families and their children who have private health insurance as the governor signed a bill mandating insurance coverage for this gold standard, this is a major achievement in the ability to respond to the increasing need. Always moving forward focused on our mission!

“Hills & Dales is dedicated to building meaningful lives for individuals with disabilities by offering services that support the whole person and enhance community inclusion.”

This group of “characters” from the Residential Center got all dressed up to be a part of the “Let’s make A Deal” gameshow booth (you know the classic where everyone dresses up!) we created to engage with attendees at the Community Showcase event hosted by the Community Foundation of greater Dubuque. We once again kept our streak going by being voted “most Creative Booth.”

AUTISM AWARENESS This giant banner displayed at a Clarke university women’s basketball game in support of autism awareness and Hills & Dales pretty much sums it up! While raising awareness, there is always an abundance of fun too – a photo booth and sensory activities are just a few examples of that fun at our Light It up Blue event in April.

In march the Dubuque Lowe’s store raised money to send an individual to a muscular Dystrophy Association (mDA) Summer Camp. Dawson, who lives at the Residential Center, set a goal to help his mother who works at Lowe’s raise money for this effort. Above Right : During a Hills & Dales all staff meeting Dawson sold mDA Shamrocks and gave a cookie he made himself to each staff who donated. Above Left : Dawson presented $58 in donations, and stands proudly with his mom and Lowe’s management staff who provided him with a t-shirt in thanks for his fundraising efforts.

There can never be enough eggs in an easter egg hunt, and the kids at the Childcare Center discovered that when they began the great hunt planned and organized by the staff and partici - pants in the Day Habilita - tion program! under a bench, by a tree, in the sandbox…..everywhere! Left : As a group of kids run from one egg to the next, a group of spectators from the Day Habilitation program gathered at the far end of the play area and cheered them on.

Above: pizza, games, friends, more pizza and more games – who wouldn’t love it?!? A group of kids who live at the Residential Center try to make a trip to Chuck e. Cheese in Davenport at least once a year and you can’t blame them at all. esther and staff member, maddie, look pretty intense trying to keep their car on the road while playing a driving simulator game.
