Search Committee: General Manager, KCWU Radio Central Washington University 400 E. University Way Ellensburg, WA 98926

Dear Colleagues,

My name is Troy Hunt and I write in application for the General Manager of

KCWU. My long history in radio and television operations, and as a college faculty member has prepared me for the position as described. In this letter I will address my experience and qualifications that make me a strong candidate for this position.

I have spent the bulk of my career as a college professor, teaching students radio and television production, programming, and operations. In that time, I built KCEU-FM from idea to fully licensed non-commercial educational radio station. I have served as the general manager of both KCEU-FM and KNWT-FM, being responsible for budgets, programming, equipment purchases and general maintenance, and supervision and training of student and volunteer staffs of up to 40 individuals. This practical work in managing the daily operation of radio stations is of great value for the position as described.

At both KCEU-FM and KNWT-FM I served as the stations Chief Operator. As such, I am very familiar with the FCC rules and regulations governing the operations of non-commercial, educational radio stations. I do my best to remain current in the changing landscape of as a terrestrial and an on-line service. This includes regular attendance at events like the National Association of Broadcasters, and my active involvement with the Broadcast Education Association. While in graduate school, I worked at KENW-FM. This experience in an NPR affiliate station was beneficial in my understanding of the operations and functions of non-commercial radio stations. I worked as a board operator, announcer, and helped with programming functions at the station. I understand college radio stations and the public radio ethos, and can support and help maintain the culture within a public broadcasting station with a wide variety or programming types.

I also worked as on-air talent at two commercial radio stations, KBRE and KREC, both in Cedar City, Utah. At both stations I ran live board shifts, programmed the ad and music automation systems, produced news and weather reports, and ran remotes for sports play-by-play. Overall, I bring rich experience to the position as described.

Other relevant experiences come from my time at KTUD-TV in Las Vegas, where

I served in the role of operations manager. My duties at the station included supervision and training of master control operators, maintaining the stations programming library, scheduling the satellite feeds for live and recorded programming, and audio and video production duties as required. This management level work can be cross-applied to the environment at KCWU.

My examination of the stations’ web page shows that 88.1 The Burg is consistent with college radio stations I have worked on and supervised. I like the variety of programming the station currently offers, and would seek continued diversity in content.

KNWT-FM, the station I currently supervise and program, has a similar breadth of content; ranging from students running live board shifts, to specialty programs produced by community volunteers, to nationally syndicated programs. The committee can listen to the station at http://radio.nwc.edu. In summary, I believe that my experiences and educational background make me a strong candidate for this position. It would be a great pleasure to come work at Central

Washington University and help facilitate the continued success of The Burg. I look forward to meeting and talking with the committee regarding this exciting position.

Best regards,

Troy L. Hunt, MA, Ed.S.
