Death, beauty, and iconoclastic nostalgia: Precarious aesthetics and Lana Del Rey Arild Fetveit NECSUS ４ (２): １８７–２０７ DOI: １０.５１１７/NECSUS２０１５.２.FETV Abstract The obsolescence of analogue media along with a rapid succession of digital formats has sensitised us to the mortality of media. It has also spawned what Dominik Schrey has called ‘a golden age of nostalgia for these allegedly “dead media”’, now explored by visual artists, filmmakers, cinematographers, Do-It- Yourself enthusiasts, Polaroid fans, Instagram users, music video directors and others. Since the mid-1990s a partially-iconoclastic impulse focused on exploring the mortality of media materials has often taken the form of medium-specific noise. However, in recent years alternative strategies that counteract clarity, involving iconoclastic disruptions of the process of mediation, supported by a host of degrading techniques and strategies that thicken and foreground the medium and its materiality, have partially replaced uses of medium-specific noise. Cultural analysts awake to these and related developments have responded with a series of productive interventions. Drawing on many of these, I propose a media aesthetic approach where the disruptions in question are conceived as involving instances of precarious mediation to be examined within a precarious aesthetics. The music videos of Lana Del Rey effectively articulate ways in which precarious mediation is used in contemporary popular culture. In many of her music videos, like Summertime Sadness (2012) and Summer Wine (2013), the precarious mediation is given a nostalgic inflection, where an ambiguous yearning for the past is imbricated with cunning attempts to perfect imperfec- tion. This nostalgia appears iconoclastic on the level of mediation as well as in its yearning for the past greatness of America.

Mikky Ekko has come home. He recorded his 2015 debut album, Time, in places as far-flung as London, Stockholm, and Los Angeles, plus any point on the compass where inspiration struck while he was on tour with Justin Timberlake, One Republic and Jessie Ware. But he wanted to record Fame, his next album, in the city that had proved both a permanent address and an inspiration for him since moving there in 2005 to attend college. It’s said that people have lucky cities, a geographic location where they seem to flourish or feel that they are their best selves. Although born in Shreveport, Louisiana, with its rich history of country rock and electric blues, Ekko found such a place in Nashville. It allowed him the freedom to be who he wanted to be — starting with those early gigs he played at 12th and Porter with slashes of red painted across his chiseled face. It informed the haunting music of his largely a cappella 2009 dreamscape Strange Fruit, a five-song EP he recorded while still a student at nearby Middle Tennessee State University that had far more in common with Brian Eno than it did Billie Holiday. A restless creator — sometimes writing two songs a day, starting most days at 4:45 am — Ekko quickly followed up Strange Fruit with two companion EPs the next year: Reds and Blues. By using descriptive qualitative method of the data were analyzed and it was found , here were 102 utterances and 8 types of figurative language they were Hyperbole 24 lyrics, personification 10 lyrics, symbol 7 lyrics, Rhyme 13 lyrics, metaphore 26 lyrics, Simile 11 lyrics, Alliteration 6 and imagery 2 lyrics. The reason of using figurative language were figurative language afforded readers imaginative pleasure of literary works was 102 lyrics. FROM: AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE 890 Broadway New York, New York 10003 (212) 477-3030 WOODKID Stepping out from behind the camera, music video director Yoann Lemoine embarked on a recording career of his own under the alias Woodkid beginning in 2011. Born in Lyon in 1983, Lemoine studied illustration and animation at the Emile CoHl ScHool before landing jobs on Luc Besson's Arthur and the Invisibles and Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. In between directing music videos for the likes of Katy Perry ("Teenage Dream"), Taylor Swift ("Back to December") and Lana Del Rey ("Born to Die," "Blue Jeans"), he recorded Woodkid's debut EP. THe Iron EP was released by Green United Music in MarcH 2011, and tHe title track appeared in several movie trailers as well as an episode of the TV series Teen Wolf. His self-directed video for 2012's "Run Boy Run," a song tHat cHarted just outside tHe Top 40 in tHe U.K., won Lemoine an MVPA Award for Best Director of tHe Year and a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video. Woodkid's debut album, The Golden Age, arrived in MarcH 2013. It received enthusiastic reviews, rising to number two on the FrencH album cHarts and going Top 10 in Belgium, Germany and Switzerland. He went on tour to support the album, including a groundbreaking performance at London's Brixton Academy alongside tHe BBC OrcHestra. In 2014, he was invited to perform and partake in a discussion about the New York minimalist movement witH Philip Glass at the Museum of Modern Art in Saint-Étienne, and was commissioned to compose an original score, Les Bosquets, for New York City Ballet.
