NOTE OF THE NIGHT APPROACHING 700 - With 698 career goals, Ovechkin is aiming to reach the 700-goal mark tonight in his 1,138th career game, which would be the second- fewest games required to reach the milestone in NHL history. Wayne Gretzky (886 games) and Brett Hull (1,157 games) are the only players to record 700 goals in fewer than 1,200 games. - Ovechkin would go from 600 to 700 goals in only 148 games, the fewest games to make that leap for any member of the 700-goal club. Should he record two goals tonight, it would mark the second-fewest games Ovechkin has required to go from one 100-goal milestone to another in his career (100 to 200 goals, 129 games). - Ovechkin has averaged 0.61 goals-per-game at this point in his career, ranking fifth in NHL history (minimum 300 games played), including an NHL-best 0.59 rate since his 30th birthday on Sept. 17, 2015. Among players in the 700-goal club, only two scored at a rate of 0.50 goals per game or higher from the age of 30 onward (Esposito: 0.57; Dionne: 0.51).

TOP CAPS FACTS OVI REACHES 40 - Alex Ovechkin ranks first in the NHL with 40 goals. Ovechkin reached the 40-goal mark before any other player, the ninth time in his career he was the first player to reach the mark, extending his NHL record. - Ovechkin's 11 40-goal seasons are the second-most in NHL history, only trailing Wayne Gretzky’s 12, and he is the only player in NHL history to record 11 40-goal seasons with one team. - Ovechkin recorded his 40th goal in 53 games, the third-fewest games to reach the mark in his career, trailing his 2009-10 season (51 games), when he was 24 years old, and his 2007-08 season (52 games), when he was 22 years old. - He became the 10th player in NHL history to score 40 goals at the age of 34 or older and the first since Daniel Alfredsson in 2007-08. Only two players have scored 50 goals at the age of 34 or older: Johnny Bucyk in 1970-71 (51 goals) and Jagr in 2005-06 (54 goals). Ovechkin will be 34 years and 209 days old on April 4, the final game of the season, and he is currently on pace to finish his year with 62 goals.

OVI's TRICK - In the Capitals’ 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings Tuesday night, Alex Ovechkin recorded three straight goals in a span of 4:24 during the third period. - Ovechkin became the first player to score three hat tricks over a span of six games (also Jan. 16 vs. New Jersey and Jan. 18 at ) since 1992-93, when Alexander Mogilny (Buffalo) and Teemu Selanne (Winnipeg) combined for the feat. - Ovechkin, who scored his first natural hat trick of his career, established a career high for his fastest three goals in a game. It was his 27th career hat trick in the regular season overall, moving him past Maurice Richard (26) for sole possession of eighth place on the NHL’s all-time list. - His hat trick came in the final seven minutes of regulation, becoming one of 13 players in NHL history to accomplish the feat and the first since Washington’s Peter Bondra on March 26, 1996 against the New York Islanders. Additionally, Ovechkin recorded the fourth-quickest hat trick in franchise history (4:24) and the quickest since Bondra’s on March 26, 1996 (4:21). - Since Jan. 13, Ovechkin’s 14 goals lead the NHL, and no other player has more than eight during this span.

CARLY FOR NORRIS - In the Capitals’ 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, John Carlson recorded three points (1g, 2a), marking his 50th and 51 st assists of the season. Carlson reached the 50-assist total in his 54th game, setting the franchise record for the fewest games to reach the total by a Capitals defenseman, nine games fewer than the previous low of 63 set by Mike Green in 2009-10. He became the NHL's fifth different defenseman in the last 30 years to reach the 50-assist mark in 54 games or fewer and first since Sergei Zubov in 1993-94. - Carlson has 21 multi-point games, seven more than the next closest defenseman (Nashville’s Roman Josi: 14). With 28 games remaining, Carlson’s 21 multi-point games are already tied for the third-most in the NHL by a defenseman over the last five seasons, four shy of passing San Jose’s Brent Burns’ mark of 24 in 2015-16. Of his 21 multi-point games, seven have been three-point games, which also leads defensemen. - Carlson is on pace for 98 points over an 82-game season. Only five defensemen in NHL history have recorded more than 100 points in a season (Bobby Orr: six times; Paul Coffey: five times; Denis Potvin, Al MacInnis and Brian Leetch: each once). - Carlson is already six points shy of surpassing his career high set last season (13g, 57a), and he’s now just 17 points shy of setting the franchise record for the most points in a season by a defenseman. - The Capitals have a 27-7-3 record this season when Carlson records a point. No player on the Capitals has contributed points in more games or wins than Carlson. - Additionally, with 468 career points (104g, 361a), Carlson is now seven points shy of passing Calle Johansson (474) for the most points in franchise history by a defenseman.

PENALTY S-KILL - Over the last ten games and since Jan. 8, the Capitals have killed 29 of their 32 penalties (90.6 percent), ranking second in the NHL. - This season, the Capitals’ 84.7 penalty kill percentage ranks second in the NHL, only trailing the (86.9 percent). It also marks the highest kill percentage in the NHL since 2015-16 (85.2 percent) and the eighth-highest percentage in franchise history. - In each of the last two seasons the Capitals won the Presidents’ Trophy as the League’s top team (2015-16, 2016-17), Washington had a penalty kill percentage of at least 83% (2015-16: 85.2%, second in the NHL; 2016-17: 83.8%, seventh in the NHL). - Jonas Siegenthaler leads the Capitals with 166:42 of penalty kill time, followed by Radko Gudas (147:32) and Nick Jensen (124:07). Among forwards, Lars Eller (138:28) and Carl Hagelin (124:47) lead the Capitals in penalty kill time. - Jensen and Hagelin have been on the ice for five and six goals against, respectively, while on the penalty kill. Jensen’s 2.44 power play goals against per 60 minutes of play ranks first in the NHL among players with at least 120 penalty kill minutes this season, while Hagelin’s 2.91 power play goals against per 60 ranks second among all players.

FLYERS VS. WASHINGTON This is the third of four games between the teams this season and is Philadelphia’s first visit to of the year to Washington. The series will conclude here on March 4.

The win the Flyers took over Washington a month ago snapped a five-game losing streak (0-4-1) the Flyers had against the Capitals that began exactly a year earlier on Jan. 8, 2019. They have dropped their last three games here at Verizon Center, with the last win coming on January 21, 2018, and they’re 1-5-1 in their last seven visits.

LAST MEETING Wednesday, January 8, 2020 – Flyers 3, Washington 2 at Wells Fargo Center: Kevin Hayes scored a shorthanded goal with 2:01 left in the second period that broke a 2-2 tie and stood up as the game winner, snapping the Flyers’ four-game winless streak. Travis Konecny opened the scoring 3:24 into the contest, and after the Capitals took a 2-1 lead on tallies by Nicklas Backstrom and Jakub Vrana, Robert Hagg tied things up with just under 42 seconds before the intermission. Hayes scored his goal after the Flyers withstood a nine-shot barrage from Washington to open the second period, and it stood up with Carter Hart blanking the Caps over the final 40 minutes with 20 of his 26 saves. Braden Holtby took the loss despite 24 stops. Stars of the Game: 1 – Kevin Hayes; 2 – Travis Konecny; 3 – Jakub Vrana.

Kevin Hayes recorded his 18th career game-winning goal and his fifth shorthanded GWG, but it was only the second shorthanded GWG that he’s scored that broke a tie to win a game. The other came on December 18, 2018 with NYR when he scored a shorthanded goal with 40 seconds left in regulation to break a 1-1 tie with Anaheim in a game the Rangers eventually won 3-1.

Hayes scored a shorthanded goal that ended up being the game-winner in the 7-4 win over Columbus back on October 26.

Sean Couturier set up the first Flyers goal, had five shots on goal, 10 total shot attempts, and was 9-for-10 on faceoffs.

Michael Raffl led the Flyers with four hits and was 8-for-11 on faceoffs.

Mark Friedman played 11:49 in his first NHL game of the season, picking up one hit.

Robert Hagg scored a goal and was credited with three hits and three blocked shots.

The Flyers held Washington without a goal on five power-play opportunities. They join Carolina, Dallas and Boston as the only teams to hold the Caps scoreless in a game where they had five or more chances on the power play.
